SUMMARY:Cian Dayrit: Liberties Were Taken
DESCRIPTION:The Blaffer Art Museum is proud to present Liberties Were Taken the first solo museum exhibition in the United States of works by Manila-based artist Cian Dayrit. Known globally for cartographic artworks\, Dayrit investigates notions of power and identity represented and reproduced in monuments\, museums\, and maps. The exhibition brings together site-specific installations\, embroidered textiles\, and elaborate paintings created over a decade of participatory actions and solidarity work in the Philippines and around the world. Deploying visual tools\, such as written text\, graphs\, and symbols\, the artist positions land as a site of struggle through archival references\, protest imagery\, and grassroots counter-mapping.

SUMMARY:Facing Survival | David Kassan
DESCRIPTION:This compelling and transformative exhibition features the masterful paintings and drawings of acclaimed artist David Kassan\, capturing the poignant stories and portraits of Holocaust survivors.\n“Facing Survival” stands as a profound testament to the enduring power of art in narrating the untold stories of resilience and survival. Through the evocative paintings and sketches meticulously crafted by Kassan\, the exhibition unveils the profound journey of more than two dozen Holocaust survivors. By intertwining the visual representation of the survivors with the sketches revealing Kassan’s artistic process\, this exhibition transcends conventional forms of testimony\, forging a poignant visual language that surpasses the limitations of spoken or written word.\nPreceding the creation of each portrait\, Kassan deeply engaged with the survivors\, filming their testimonies and comprehending their intricate histories. His profound connection with his subjects enables him to capture not just their present visages\, but the essence of their harrowing pasts. The lifelike imagery pulsates with their spirit\, pain and dignity\, transforming these paintings into testaments of resilience and reflections of lives shaped by unspeakable violence.\nMoreover\, “Facing Survival” aspires to transcend the incomprehensible statistics—such as the unfathomable six million lives lost—to highlight the individuality of each survivor. It is a testament that defies generalization\, seeking to evoke a profound emotional connection\, to allow us to bear witness to the miraculous existence of each singular soul.

SUMMARY:Xu Bing: Word Alchemy
DESCRIPTION:‘Xu Bing: Word Alchemy’ assembles more than 50 of Xu Bing’s most important woodcut prints\, videos\, drawings\, installations\, and other ephemera representing almost 50 years of the artist’s creative output. Starting with Xu’s early engagements with social realism and Western art historical traditions alike\, the exhibition charts the evolution of the artist’s linguistic experiments which challenge and expand not only the history of Chinese landscape painting\, but the canons of contemporary art.\nBorn in China and now working in both Brooklyn and Beijing\, artist Xu Bing (b. 1955) is widely considered to be one of the most important artists to emerge from China in the 20th century. Focusing on the artist’s longstanding engagement with words and language\, ‘Word Alchemy’ is the most comprehensive exhibition on this theme so far\, and around one-third of the objects in the exhibition are being shown in the U.S. for the first time.\nHighlights of the exhibition include Xu Bing’s early works\, his private never-before-seen notebook\, landmark prints including the Series of Repetitions handscroll\, a new Background Story with a connection to Zhao Mengfu’s famous ‘Autumn Colors on the Qiao and Hua Mountains’ handscroll\, a new Texas-themed ‘Square Word Calligraphy\,’ and a new installation of ‘Monkeys Grasp for the Moon’ in Asia Society Texas’ Fayez Sarofim Grand Hall.\nOn the occasion of the exhibition\, Asia Society Texas will publish a full-color exhibition catalogue and host a symposium on Xu Bing’s art on February 23\, 2024.

SUMMARY:Latino cARTographies Digital Board Exhibit of Houston Artists
DESCRIPTION:We are featuring an exhibit with the University of Houston that features Latin artists through an art digital board that also features our mural. Under the leadership of Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, Director of the University of Houston’s (UH) Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies (CMALS) launched the groundbreaking digital board\, Latino cARTographies: Mapping the Past\, Present\, and Future of Houston’s Latino Visual Art. The exhibit is on display from Friday\, April 26 to December 31\, 2024.\nThis portable\, bilingual\, and interactive digital board funded by the University of Houston is the result of a three-year collaboration led by Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, with the curatorial leadership of former vice president of the National Mexican Museum of Art in Chicago\, Juana Guzman\, the CMALS Research Team\, and the International Gibson Group.\nTickets at the door are only $5 and include two other exhibits!\nClick HERE to read an article about the exhibit in Houston History Magazine.\nThe idea for Latino cARTographies began when Dr. Quiroz organized the city of Houston to host the country’s premier Latino art event\, Latino Art Now! Dr. Quiroz conceived the idea for the digital board and viewed it as a way to create a dynamic but permanent tribute to the Latino artists of Houston. She then persuaded the Gibson Group to collaborate with CMALS to achieve this goal. The result is a twenty-first-century mode to access the arts and experience culture – Latino cARTographies – that maps the past\, present\, and future of Houston’s Latino art. By utilizing technology that preserves\, represents\, and promotes Houston’s Latino visual arts and communities in an equitable and inclusive manner\, CMALS is transforming how we experience art in the twenty-first century.\nLatino cARTographies features our commissioned a mural to celebrate the many contributions of our city’s Mexican-American community. In the spirit of the great Mexican muralists\, this vibrant collective artwork\, Mexican-American History & Culture in 20th Century Houston\, highlights the places\, personalities\, concepts and events that shaped the Mexican-American community and laid the foundation for the multicultural city we live in today. Set in Connally Plaza against a dramatic backdrop of City Hall and the downtown skyline\, the mural is a cultural landmark in the historic heart of Houston. This mural spotlights 38 places\, personalities\, and events that played a key role in the growth of this community and provides recognition for the countless and essential contributions of Mexican Americans to the economy\, culture\, and vitality of our city in the 1900s. Mural artists Laura López Cano and Jesse Sifuentes\, along with key fundraisers and government officials celebrated the unveiling to Houstonians in September 2018 for National Hispanic Heritage Month. Since then\, we have several outdoor activities being celebrated around the mural for National Hispanic Heritage Month and host field trips telling the stories behind the mural. The vibrant mural\, located at 1100 Bagby Street\, is now complemented by the interactive\, digital board that is inside our museum gallery.\nAbout the Exhibitor: Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies\, University of Houston\nThe Center for Mexican American and Latino/a Studies (CMALS) at the University of Houston was established in 1972 as an interdisciplinary academic program encompassing the liberal arts\, education and social sciences focusing on the Mexican American and broader Latino experience in the U.S. Its mission is to advance knowledge\, promote critical thinking and foster the value of service to the community. This involves designing a broad spectrum of public and scholarly programs. Located within the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences\, CMALS has evolved into an academic unit with several major components: teaching\, research and publications\, recruitment and retention\, leadership training\, academic advising and community service.\nThank you to the following:\nMarisela Martinez\, Ed.D. SUMMARY:What Is A Ward?
DESCRIPTION:What defines a Ward\, or in a more modern sense of the word\, a neighborhood? Sabine Street Studios is located in Houston’s historic First Ward\, meaning the first developed in Houston. As artists and creatives we all come from different backgrounds and heritages\, as does our practice. But this practice has a shared sense of personal belonging\, of representing us and ourselves. Can a neighborhood have an identity when it is made up of diverse peoples and backgrounds? Or is it just a geographic definition\, delineated by streets and bayous?\nFor this tenant exhibition\, artists were asked: “How does your Ward fit within your studio practice? Is the idea of “home” something which inspires you creatively\, or a place of rest and comfort?” The exhibition is on view in the South Gallery through July 14.

SUMMARY:Building a Mystery: The Impact of Cultural Humility on Spiritual Practice (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Explore the many ways that the realms of culture\, society\, and religion support each other\, and how we can respectfully and authentically adopt the valuable perspectives embedded in the wisdom traditions of cultures other than our own.\nThe ancient\, living religious traditions of Tibet and indigenous America understand humanity as inextricably interconnected with its environment. Many psychologically- and spiritually-minded individuals find themselves incorporating the environmental wisdom of these traditions into their personal spiritual practices. Less well-understood than their inherent care for the environment are the cultural and societal contexts in which these traditions formed and grew\, and the largely-unspoken ways that these contexts – not often thought of as spiritual – fundamentally inform the practices of those spiritual traditions. If we take up these practices without considering their cultural and societal background\, we run the very real risk of misunderstanding the imaginal or mythical worldviews at the hearts of these traditions\, inadvertently and inappropriately adopting culture-bound behaviors that do not accurately reflect our own deep and complicated histories\, and allowing ourselves to remain blind to our own unconscious attachments to ideals that deepen the environmental crisis.\nHow can we honor the profundity and pragmatic usefulness of these spiritual worldviews without succumbing to the western world’s deeply-embedded tendencies to intellectual colonization and cultural appropriation? How can we remain curious and reflective about the ways we treat the earth\, and not use these powerful spiritual ecologies as a way of bypassing our responsibility to the lands we inhabit? Join us for this all-day conference as we explore the many ways that the realms of culture\, society\, and religion support each other\, and how we can respectfully and authentically adopt the valuable perspectives embedded in these wisdom traditions.

SUMMARY:Big\, Hot & Sticky
DESCRIPTION:Architecture Center Houston is proud to announce their upcoming exhibition Big\, Hot\, and Sticky\, opening Thursday\, June 27\, 5:30-7:30pm\, and on view through April 23\, 2024. Curated by Dalia Munenzon and Maggie Tsang\, the exhibition commissions seven architects and artist to respond to Houston’s built and natural environment.\nHouston is Big\, Hot\, and Sticky. The metropolitan region is roughly 640 square miles\, and from east of Galveston Bay to west of Katy\, it is comparable in width to the State of Connecticut. For nearly one third of the year\, the city’s temperature climbs to at least 90 °F; and 2\,500 miles of slow moving\, flat waterways crisscross the city creating a swamp-like environment.\nHouston’s emergence as a metropolis\, like many American cities\, has been shaped by its defiance of the environment. From climate control to flood control\, the city is a hyper-engineered\, constructed landscape designed to resist the natural world. As Houston grows\, however\, so too does this tension between the natural and the human-made: from the shock of hurricanes and tropical storms to the chronic stresses of urban heat and nuisance flooding. In the face of these environmental challenges\, engineered and technological solutions have a limited impact\, and historically\, have also been sources of inequality. Instead\, what is needed is a more radical social\, cultural\, and ecological imaginary that recasts the city’s relationship to nature.\nBig\, Hot\, and Sticky\, spotlights Houston as a novel urban ecosystem: a constellation of highways\, waterways\, air-conditioned buildings\, remnant prairies\, and possums. This exhibition invites seven designers to respond to Houston’s provocation through critical histories\, design research\, and speculative projects rooted in the city’s urban landscape: How are environments\, climates\, and cultures co-constructed? SUMMARY:Beetlejuice
DESCRIPTION:He earned his stripes on Broadway… now the ghost-with-the-most is coming to Austin.\nIt’s showtime! Based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved film\, this hilarious musical tells the story of Lydia Deetz\, a strange and unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon with a thing for stripes. With an irreverent book\, an astonishing set\, and a score that’s out of this Netherworld\, BEETLEJUICE is “SCREAMINGLY GOOD FUN!” (Variety). And under its uproarious surface (six feet under\, to be exact)\, it’s a remarkably touching show about family\, love\, and making the most of every Day-O!\nBeetlejuice contains strong language\, mature references\, and a lot of the crazy\, inappropriate stuff you would expect from a deranged demon. DESCRIPTION:In Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age\, he covers all the bases: sex\, death and bacchanalia\, with a set list as eclectic as the man himself. Songs from Cabaret authors Kander and Ebb blend with contemporary favourites and even a self-penned paean against plastic surgery. ‘I am literally the only person on American TV who has not had botox!’ he quips. He also discusses the effects of gravity\, the time the mum from the Brady Bunch punched him\, and what his dog taught him about the quality of life.

Sequenced\narchitectural wall reliefs\, encaustic sculptures\, ever-shifting floral patterns\, and hyper-sized sculptures of\neveryday print objects – just a few of the ways in which artists continue to expand on the medium’s\ncreative potential and inspire all who view their work. Together\, this dynamic group reiterates the notion\nthat humans around the world are connected in more ways than one – even by the simplest of objects.

SUMMARY:What Matters Most: How Can We Accept Morality? (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:What might be possible if we understand death as the goal of life?\nWhy are we here? How can we live fulfilled\, meaningful lives? Why do we suffer? How do we build a truly connected\, inclusive community? The most important questions in our lives do not have simple answers. Often we have to live our way into those answers over a long time – they can’t be found in five easy steps in a YouTube video. And we need people and perspectives different from our own to support us in the process.

SUMMARY:An Introduction to Initiating Dream Circles (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Deepen your understanding of what makes a dream group “Jungian\,” and how a shared language can enhance cohesion. Jungian-based dream circles hold a unique container for archetypal material to emerge from the unconscious through sound\, image\, and complexes. However\, the at-times unruly and suggestive power of this material requires a safe and practiced temenos – a sacred space of radical containment – to be demonstrated and modelled by the facilitator of the dream circle. When dreams are caught\, held\, and shared with other souls\, they can change attitudes\, perspectives\, and lived experience\, both individually and communally. The analytic process developed by C.G. Jung offers guidelines for facilitating this layered and mysterious psychic unfolding. In the upcoming fall semester\, Jungian analyst Jennifer Embry will facilitate the first part of a four-part zoom training and mentoring program for licensed therapists\, individuals in long-term Jungian study\, or those whose vocation brings them into the proximity of the unconscious and the archetypal field (yogis\, body-workers\, breath-workers\, artists\, and astrologers\, to name a few) who wish to facilitate their own dream circles through Jung’s words and concepts. Do you want to create a deep\, symbolic exploration that initiates insight and greater understanding of our common humanity and our spiritual essence\, all while forming honest\, open-hearted communities? If you are interested\, bring your curiosity and come join us for a taste of the nectar in this introductory lecture!
