SUMMARY:'Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu Heat Silhouette'
DESCRIPTION:Asia Society Texas is pleased to present Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu Heat Silhouette\, the organization’s first public art installation. This collaboration between Cuban American artist Rafael Domenech and Vietnamese American artist Tomas Vu assumes the form of a dynamic outdoor pavilion with two stages\, occupying AST’s 13\,000-square-foot lot at the intersection of Oakdale and Caroline Streets in the heart of Houston’s Museum District. Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu Heat Silhouette is commissioned in partnership with the University of Houston’s Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts.\nDescribed by the artists as a form of “urban acupuncture\,” Heat Silhouette is a physical structure designed to welcome the spontaneous circulation of people\, energy\, and events. The outdoor pavilion takes cues from college campuses\, popular culture\, and experimental magazines. Made of wood\, aluminum framing\, and laser-cut construction mesh — the very materials used to build the city of Houston — the pavilion becomes an extension of the museum and a public programming space. The title itself references the most omnipresent weather condition of Houston the summer’s intense heat\, a heat so palpable that it feels as if it occupies actual space\, creating a silhouette or edge.\nFor the artists\, the pavilion resists merely being a form of architecture. Instead\, the pavilion physically operates as an experimental magazine\, referencing the graphic processes seen in radical publications from the 1960s and 1970s like Kontexts\, an important catalyst of avant-garde poetry. Readers do not flip Heat Silhouette’s pages; instead\, they become viewers that are invited to walk in\, around\, and through the publication. Laser-cut texts appropriated from popular science-fiction films\, poetry\, and other sources intermingle to form multiple layers and viewpoints that shift with the sunlight. Heat Silhouette is a space of active production filled with theater-like compartments — a site where text\, image\, and pattern coalesce into a kind of urban camouflage.

SUMMARY:Critical Geography – FotoFest Biennial 2024
DESCRIPTION:The FotoFest Biennial 2024 central exhibition\, “Critical Geography”\, reexamines traditional Western and historical understandings of geography while expanding these investigations to new realms. Borrowing its name from the subdiscipline of geography that questions and challenges power structures\, inequality\, and the dominant ideologies shaping physical space\, Critical Geography explores how space\, place\, and communities are influenced by social\, economic\, ecological\, and political forces. By critically analyzing these dynamics\, the works in the exhibition provoke conversations around social justice\, environmental sustainability\, and transformative change.\n“Our intent is that the 2024 Biennial\, featuring both existing and newly commissioned works from local and international artists\, will allow viewers to engage in important dialogues around the social dimensions of space and our shared planet\,” says Steven Evans\, Executive Director of FotoFest. “We look forward to once again celebrating Houston’s vibrant art and photo community while embracing these new perspectives around place-making\, the image\, and geography.”\n“Critical Geography” features a diverse range of image-based practices\, representing artists from photographers and storytellers whose works shed light on systemic oppression\, violence\, and urgent environmental concerns to image-makers who appropriate mapping\, social media\, and technology in order to explore inequality in colonial and post-colonial contexts. The exhibition highlights a range of unorthodox strategies employed to construct new narratives around place and community while imagining alternative organizations of social space. The Biennial exhibition includes several site-specific works and new commissions by FotoFest.

SUMMARY:Unveiling Gulfton’s Newest Murals
DESCRIPTION:The Hillcroft St. corridor\, already transformed with bike lanes\, wider sidewalks\, and a new stop light at Dashwood\, is now further enhanced by the vivid stories painted on its retaining walls. Through a collaboration between Connect Community and UP Art Studio\, three remarkable murals have been brought to life\, each a celebration of the diverse cultural tapestry of Southwest Houston.\nThe artists\, Brenda Chapa\, Sims\, and Santiago Perez\, will be presenting their murals at this event. They were carefully chosen by a selection panel comprised of community members\, ensuring that the voices and preferences of the locality were heard and represented. Each artist brought their unique narrative and vision to the project\, deeply influenced by their personal journeys and cultural backgrounds. Brenda Chapa’s mural draws from her Mexican roots and her life in Houston’s Southwest side\, encapsulating the vibrant community spirit. Sims\, with his graffiti and pop art-inspired style\, infused his work with bold colors and dynamic forms\, echoing the energy of the area. Santiago Perez\, blending his Colombian heritage with his experiences in Houston\, created a piece that vibrates with color and life\, symbolizing the diversity and unity of the community.\nWhat sets this project apart is not just the artistic talent but the engagement of the Greater Sharpstown and Gulfton communities in the creative process. The designs for the murals were voted on by the community through an online survey\, allowing residents to have a direct hand in shaping their neighborhood’s aesthetic. This inclusive approach ensured that the murals reflected the collective heart and soul of the people\, making the Hillcroft corridor not just a route through the city\, but a destination in itself\, rich with stories and splendor.\nFunded by the City of Houston via a Houston Arts Alliance grant and maintained by the Southwest Management District\, these murals stand as a testament to the power of art in forging community identity and pride. They not only beautify the space but serve as a beacon of collective creativity and unity\, welcoming all who travel through the Hillcroft St. corridor to pause and appreciate the beauty of diversity and the strength of community bonds.

SUMMARY:Beyond Broadway Series: Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age
DESCRIPTION:In Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age\, he covers all the bases: sex\, death and bacchanalia\, with a set list as eclectic as the man himself. Songs from Cabaret authors Kander and Ebb blend with contemporary favourites and even a self-penned paean against plastic surgery. ‘I am literally the only person on American TV who has not had botox!’ he quips. He also discusses the effects of gravity\, the time the mum from the Brady Bunch punched him\, and what his dog taught him about the quality of life.

SUMMARY:The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare
DESCRIPTION:The Classical Theatre Company will wrap up its Season of Iconic Women with William Shakespeare’s comic masterpiece\, The Taming of the Shrew. Having not produced a Shakespeare piece since Henry V in 2015\, nor a Shakespeare comedy since The Merchant of Venice in 2013\, CTC is primed and ready to dive into The Bard once again.\nThe Taming of the Shrew follows the story of Katherine who is being sold off as a wife by her father to the highest bidder. Her boldness and stubborn streak have made her unmarriable by society\, but her sister\, Bianca\, cannot marry until the elder sister has been so. Enter Petruchio\, a cad who is determined to win over Katherine to be his wife. An explosive battle of the sexes ensues in this electrically charged love story that will have audiences crying with laughter.\n“This play is my favorite Shakespeare comedy\,” says CTC Executive Artistic Director John Johnston. “But it’s got some problematic aspects that don’t really play at face value for a modern audience. The idea of a woman being ‘tamed’ by a man to be married is creepy at best. So\, to address this issue\, our production is going to set the play as a mid-20th-century sitcom. Think Father Knows Best\, The Donna Reed Show\, or The Dick Van Dyke Show. Using the script to explore the values that we once held in our popular culture\, and do still to this day\, in some respects. Our goal is to examine and critique the treatment of women rather than glorify it\, and this lens of pre-feminist situational comedies will help us to do that.”

SUMMARY:Beetlejuice
DESCRIPTION:He earned his stripes on Broadway… now the ghost-with-the-most is coming to Austin.\nIt’s showtime! Based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved film\, this hilarious musical tells the story of Lydia Deetz\, a strange and unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon with a thing for stripes. With an irreverent book\, an astonishing set\, and a score that’s out of this Netherworld\, BEETLEJUICE is “SCREAMINGLY GOOD FUN!” (Variety). And under its uproarious surface (six feet under\, to be exact)\, it’s a remarkably touching show about family\, love\, and making the most of every Day-O!\nBeetlejuice contains strong language\, mature references\, and a lot of the crazy\, inappropriate stuff you would expect from a deranged demon. Recommended for ages 13 and up.\nPresented by the Memorial Hermann Broadway at the Hobby Center

SUMMARY:(of) Everything Island
DESCRIPTION:Katrina Moorhead’s (of) Everything Island is an assembly of evocative sculptural objects interacting with one another in the main gallery. Building off Moorhead’s sensitivity to materials’ potential for expansive storytelling\, these objects explore places where the veil between the real and the otherworldly is thin and porous. The works reimagine aspects of the natural world\, referencing unearthly entities and apparitions\, flora and fauna\, culled from a disparate array of sources including Victorian evolutionary theory\, video games\, and traditional Irish fairy folklore to create a feminist exploration of grief\, empathy\, and resilience.

SUMMARY:Popcorn Psychology (In Person)
DESCRIPTION:Grab some popcorn and discover how film and psychology go together like Mike and Ike!\nIt’s back! Grab some popcorn and discover how film and psychology go together like Mike and Ike. It is no accident that the movies came of age alongside the discipline of psychology. Both examined the human experience in new and innovative ways\, inventing vocabularies and techniques that continue to shape our culture and our very perceptions of ourselves. We will watch portions of four movies in class and explore how psychology can inform our film watching\, and how the art of film can teach us about human nature.

This multigenre workshop will help South Asian writers reclaim their roots and stretch beyond them\, developing authentic voices rather than feeding into an imaginary fetishized South Asian monolithic consciousness. We will do so through generative prompts\, a diverse range of sample texts\, group discussions\, multimodal play\, and collaborative exercises. Hopefully\, in the process\, we will build a community that encourages risks\, makes space for vulnerability\, and offers generous feedback.
