SUMMARY:Third Ward Unity in Faith: Backbone of Our Souls
DESCRIPTION:Early African American settlers in Houston’s Third Ward area established small worship places\, reminiscent of the praise houses attended during slavery in the Jim Crow era. The intimate and personal size of the congregations created bonds in the community that would last for more than 90 years.\nImages of the still-standing small houses of worship\, captured by art photographers Earlie Hudnall\, Ray Carrington and Tamirah Collins\, will be shared at the exhibition “Third Ward Unity in Faith: Backbone of Our Souls\,” opening March 23 at the Community Artists’ Collective\, 4101 San Jacinto\, Suite 116.\nKathleen Coleman\, a fourth generation Third Ward resident\, curated the exhibition.\nThese small churches resembled rural structures like those in many sharecropping communities near Houston. A few of these small congregations linger and tell the story of the Third Ward’s ever-changing landscape. Because of its proximity to downtown Houston\, the churches are often sold and inhabited by a younger demographic.\nHudnall and Carrington\, who attended Texas Southern University\, have been cataloging the Third Ward area for more than 30 years\, telling a story with their photos of the community block by block\, from past to present. Hudnall’s mentor\, Dr. John Biggers\, saw the shotgun houses as urban pyramids. Carrington’s mentor\, veteran photographer and teacher Herbert Provost\, instilled a love of photography and of the community in him as a student at Jack Yates High School.\nCollins\, a mentee of Carrington and the exhibition coordinator at The Collective\, will continue documenting the area from a new generational perspective.\nThe exhibition\, which continues through May 18\, is part of the FotoFest Biennial and is free to attend. An opening reception will be held Saturday\, March 23\, at 2 p.m. and an artists’ talk Saturday\, April 27\, at 3 p.m.

SUMMARY:Potentia // Actualitas
DESCRIPTION:Potentia // Actualitas is a collaborative\, immersive installation that explores the potential and actualized complexities of natural intelligence through lens-based media\, found objects and ready-mades in a site-specific installation. The lens-based works record iterations of light\, space and water surrounding a central structure created from organic matter\, rusted artifacts\, glass\, and construction materials. Running throughout is a neon line that connects these varying attributes into a systemic relationship. Together\, Cindee Travis Klement and JR Roykovich build a world that investigates the balance of opposing dichotomies and subsequent freedom from dualistic constraints. They advocate for a wild and intuitive response to a possible future of unbound potential.

SUMMARY:Wes Archer & Steve Brudniak Simultaneous Solo Shows at Reeves Art + Design
DESCRIPTION:Reeves Art + Design is excited to announce their upcoming simultaneous solo show lineup for May featuring the work of Wes Archer and Steve Brudniak. The exhibitions will be on view May 10th\, 2024 through May 25th\, 2024. The opening reception will take place on Friday\, May 10th\, 2024\, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Admission is free and open to the public.\nWes Archer\nWes Archer\, a Houston native\, is a renowned animation director and painter who was instrumental in the development of a long list of notable television shows including The Simpsons\, King of the Hill\, Rick & Morty\, and many more. He attained a Certificate of Fine Arts from California Institute of the Arts in 1983. During this time\, he simultaneously maintained a painting practice for over 20 years. His show here at Reeves Art + Design will be his first ever gallery exhibition and feature work that references his illustrious animation career as well as showcase his other creative work.\nNOTABLE TELEVISION DIRECTING HISTORY\nKing of the Hill – 20th Television Animation (currently)\nRick & Morty – Cartoon Network & Adult Swim (53 episodes)\nDisenchantment – Netflix (3 episodes)\nAnimals – HBO (4 episodes)\nBob’s Burgers – Fox (8 episodes)\nThe Goode Family – ABC (13 episodes)\nKing of the Hill – Fox (151 episodes)\nMe\, Eloise – Starz (13 episodes)\nFuturama – Fox (2 episodes)\nThe Simpsons – Fox (26 episodes)\nThe Simpsons: Tracey Ullman Shorts – Fox (48 shorts)\nSteve Brudniak\nSteve Brudniak’s exhibition Ontological Catastrophe explores his oeuvre from the last 24 years. Given that his multimedia assemblages can take months or even years to complete\, the artist qualifies these as his latest body of work. His work combines a variety of unconventional materials\, such as meteorites\, lasers\, and bismuth\, as well as moving parts and lights to explore the ever-shifting psychological realities that this century has brought into question.\nThese pieces aim to share glimpses of what we are not aware of through ordinary channels: realms influenced by dreams\, meditation\, hypnosis\, therapy\, psychedelics\, the subconscious\, science\, metaphysics\, mysticism\, technology\, theology\, spirituality\, and ontology. These are multimedia assemblages\, refined from extraordinary materials and objects; enhanced with phenomenal elements: previous works have gone into space\, contain the oldest known life\, produce lightning\, employ human blood etc. Such novelties assist in skirting the edge of five senses\, to flirt with unique perceptions.

SUMMARY:Carya String Quartet: Eternal Questions
DESCRIPTION:Beethoven quartets have become a staple of the quartet repertoire since they were written almost 200 years ago. In their sixth season\, the Carya String Quartet explores some of their favorites from Beethoven’s oeuvre while exploring the influences that Beethoven has had throughout the centuries.\n“Eternal Questions” will feature Beethoven’s Op. 135\, which opens with a question set to music: “Muss es sein?” or “Must it be?”. 120 years later\, Shostakovich asked a similar question in the final movement of his Third Quartet: “Why? And for what?” These existential questions are explored musically also by Nina C. Young’s 2013 meditation on life and time\, Memento Mori.

SUMMARY:Beyond Broadway Series: Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age
DESCRIPTION:In Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age\, he covers all the bases: sex\, death and bacchanalia\, with a set list as eclectic as the man himself. Songs from Cabaret authors Kander and Ebb blend with contemporary favourites and even a self-penned paean against plastic surgery. ‘I am literally the only person on American TV who has not had botox!’ he quips. He also discusses the effects of gravity\, the time the mum from the Brady Bunch punched him\, and what his dog taught him about the quality of life.

SUMMARY:The Sound of Music
DESCRIPTION:A family-friendly classicA tale of resistance\, courage\, and joy  The Sound of Music\, whose story begins in the hills of Austria on the eve of the Nazis’ annexation\, resonates as much today as during the musical’s 1959 premiere. Acclaimed director Francesca Zambello incorporates songs from both the theatrical version and its famous cinematic adaptation into her new production\, a vibrant staging of the beloved story of the von Trapp children\, their stern father\, and the novice-turned-governess Maria who changes their lives. The Wortham Theater is the perfect place to experience Rodgers and Hammerstein’s original vision for their timeless musical\, propelled by the full power of the world-class HGO Orchestra and Chorus and a peerless cast including world-famous mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard as Maria and baritone Alexander Birch Elliott as the Captain. HGO’s Richard Bado takes the podium to conduct this classic family-friendly production.

SUMMARY:Beetlejuice
DESCRIPTION:He earned his stripes on Broadway… now the ghost-with-the-most is coming to Austin.\nIt’s showtime! Based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved film\, this hilarious musical tells the story of Lydia Deetz\, a strange and unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon with a thing for stripes. With an irreverent book\, an astonishing set\, and a score that’s out of this Netherworld\, BEETLEJUICE is “SCREAMINGLY GOOD FUN!” (Variety). And under its uproarious surface (six feet under\, to be exact)\, it’s a remarkably touching show about family\, love\, and making the most of every Day-O!\nBeetlejuice contains strong language\, mature references\, and a lot of the crazy\, inappropriate stuff you would expect from a deranged demon. Recommended for ages 13 and up.\nPresented by the Memorial Hermann Broadway at the Hobby Center

SUMMARY:'Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu Heat Silhouette'
DESCRIPTION:Asia Society Texas is pleased to present Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu Heat Silhouette\, the organization’s first public art installation. This collaboration between Cuban American artist Rafael Domenech and Vietnamese American artist Tomas Vu assumes the form of a dynamic outdoor pavilion with two stages\, occupying AST’s 13\,000-square-foot lot at the intersection of Oakdale and Caroline Streets in the heart of Houston’s Museum District. Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu Heat Silhouette is commissioned in partnership with the University of Houston’s Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts.\nDescribed by the artists as a form of “urban acupuncture\,” Heat Silhouette is a physical structure designed to welcome the spontaneous circulation of people\, energy\, and events. The outdoor pavilion takes cues from college campuses\, popular culture\, and experimental magazines. Made of wood\, aluminum framing\, and laser-cut construction mesh — the very materials used to build the city of Houston — the pavilion becomes an extension of the museum and a public programming space. The title itself references the most omnipresent weather condition of Houston the summer’s intense heat\, a heat so palpable that it feels as if it occupies actual space\, creating a silhouette or edge.\nFor the artists\, the pavilion resists merely being a form of architecture. Instead\, the pavilion physically operates as an experimental magazine\, referencing the graphic processes seen in radical publications from the 1960s and 1970s like Kontexts\, an important catalyst of avant-garde poetry. Readers do not flip Heat Silhouette’s pages; instead\, they become viewers that are invited to walk in\, around\, and through the publication. Laser-cut texts appropriated from popular science-fiction films\, poetry\, and other sources intermingle to form multiple layers and viewpoints that shift with the sunlight. Heat Silhouette is a space of active production filled with theater-like compartments — a site where text\, image\, and pattern coalesce into a kind of urban camouflage.

SUMMARY:Xu Bing: Word Alchemy
DESCRIPTION:‘Xu Bing: Word Alchemy’ assembles more than 50 of Xu Bing’s most important woodcut prints\, videos\, drawings\, installations\, and other ephemera representing almost 50 years of the artist’s creative output. Starting with Xu’s early engagements with social realism and Western art historical traditions alike\, the exhibition charts the evolution of the artist’s linguistic experiments which challenge and expand not only the history of Chinese landscape painting\, but the canons of contemporary art.\nBorn in China and now working in both Brooklyn and Beijing\, artist Xu Bing (b. 1955) is widely considered to be one of the most important artists to emerge from China in the 20th century. Focusing on the artist’s longstanding engagement with words and language\, ‘Word Alchemy’ is the most comprehensive exhibition on this theme so far\, and around one-third of the objects in the exhibition are being shown in the U.S. for the first time.\nHighlights of the exhibition include Xu Bing’s early works\, his private never-before-seen notebook\, landmark prints including the Series of Repetitions handscroll\, a new Background Story with a connection to Zhao Mengfu’s famous ‘Autumn Colors on the Qiao and Hua Mountains’ handscroll\, a new Texas-themed ‘Square Word Calligraphy\,’ and a new installation of ‘Monkeys Grasp for the Moon’ in Asia Society Texas’ Fayez Sarofim Grand Hall.\nOn the occasion of the exhibition\, Asia Society Texas will publish a full-color exhibition catalogue and host a symposium on Xu Bing’s art on February 23\, 2024.
