In this workshop\, we will use our own memories of taste\, touch\, sight\, sound\, and smell to make descriptions of place and setting more unique and specific. Generative exercises will encourage writers to consider how the story world helps shape character and how their characters experience the world. Are there certain senses that might be more pronounced in the world of the story? Do your characters feel more comfortable or competent with one or two of their senses? SUMMARY:Latino cARTographies Digital Board Exhibit of Houston Artists
DESCRIPTION:We are featuring an exhibit with the University of Houston that features Latin artists through an art digital board that also features our mural. Under the leadership of Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, Director of the University of Houston’s (UH) Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies (CMALS) launched the groundbreaking digital board\, Latino cARTographies: Mapping the Past\, Present\, and Future of Houston’s Latino Visual Art. The exhibit is on display from Friday\, April 26 to December 31\, 2024.\nThis portable\, bilingual\, and interactive digital board funded by the University of Houston is the result of a three-year collaboration led by Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, with the curatorial leadership of former vice president of the National Mexican Museum of Art in Chicago\, Juana Guzman\, the CMALS Research Team\, and the International Gibson Group.\nTickets at the door are only $5 and include two other exhibits!\nClick HERE to read an article about the exhibit in Houston History Magazine.\nThe idea for Latino cARTographies began when Dr. Quiroz organized the city of Houston to host the country’s premier Latino art event\, Latino Art Now! Dr. Quiroz conceived the idea for the digital board and viewed it as a way to create a dynamic but permanent tribute to the Latino artists of Houston. She then persuaded the Gibson Group to collaborate with CMALS to achieve this goal. The result is a twenty-first-century mode to access the arts and experience culture – Latino cARTographies – that maps the past\, present\, and future of Houston’s Latino art. By utilizing technology that preserves\, represents\, and promotes Houston’s Latino visual arts and communities in an equitable and inclusive manner\, CMALS is transforming how we experience art in the twenty-first century.\nLatino cARTographies features our commissioned a mural to celebrate the many contributions of our city’s Mexican-American community. In the spirit of the great Mexican muralists\, this vibrant collective artwork\, Mexican-American History & Culture in 20th Century Houston\, highlights the places\, personalities\, concepts and events that shaped the Mexican-American community and laid the foundation for the multicultural city we live in today. Set in Connally Plaza against a dramatic backdrop of City Hall and the downtown skyline\, the mural is a cultural landmark in the historic heart of Houston. This mural spotlights 38 places\, personalities\, and events that played a key role in the growth of this community and provides recognition for the countless and essential contributions of Mexican Americans to the economy\, culture\, and vitality of our city in the 1900s. Mural artists Laura López Cano and Jesse Sifuentes\, along with key fundraisers and government officials celebrated the unveiling to Houstonians in September 2018 for National Hispanic Heritage Month. Since then\, we have several outdoor activities being celebrated around the mural for National Hispanic Heritage Month and host field trips telling the stories behind the mural. The vibrant mural\, located at 1100 Bagby Street\, is now complemented by the interactive\, digital board that is inside our museum gallery.\nAbout the Exhibitor: Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies\, University of Houston\nThe Center for Mexican American and Latino/a Studies (CMALS) at the University of Houston was established in 1972 as an interdisciplinary academic program encompassing the liberal arts\, education and social sciences focusing on the Mexican American and broader Latino experience in the U.S. Its mission is to advance knowledge\, promote critical thinking and foster the value of service to the community. SUMMARY:Xu Bing: Word Alchemy
DESCRIPTION:‘Xu Bing: Word Alchemy’ assembles more than 50 of Xu Bing’s most important woodcut prints\, videos\, drawings\, installations\, and other ephemera representing almost 50 years of the artist’s creative output. Starting with Xu’s early engagements with social realism and Western art historical traditions alike\, the exhibition charts the evolution of the artist’s linguistic experiments which challenge and expand not only the history of Chinese landscape painting\, but the canons of contemporary art.\nBorn in China and now working in both Brooklyn and Beijing\, artist Xu Bing (b. 1955) is widely considered to be one of the most important artists to emerge from China in the 20th century. Focusing on the artist’s longstanding engagement with words and language\, ‘Word Alchemy’ is the most comprehensive exhibition on this theme so far\, and around one-third of the objects in the exhibition are being shown in the U.S. for the first time.\nHighlights of the exhibition include Xu Bing’s early works\, his private never-before-seen notebook\, landmark prints including the Series of Repetitions handscroll\, a new Background Story with a connection to Zhao Mengfu’s famous ‘Autumn Colors on the Qiao and Hua Mountains’ handscroll\, a new Texas-themed ‘Square Word Calligraphy\,’ and a new installation of ‘Monkeys Grasp for the Moon’ in Asia Society Texas’ Fayez Sarofim Grand Hall.\nOn the occasion of the exhibition\, Asia Society Texas will publish a full-color exhibition catalogue and host a symposium on Xu Bing’s art on February 23\, 2024.

Light refreshments will be on hand.\n10 AM – 11 AM: Wes Archer will conduct a tour of his work and answer questions.\n2 PM – 3 PM: Steve Brudniak will conduct a gallery tour and dialogue with curator/artist Benito Huerta and the public.\nSteve Brudniak\nSteve Brudniak’s exhibition Ontological Catastrophe explores his oeuvre from the last 24 years. Given that his multimedia assemblages can take months or even years to complete\, the artist qualifies these as his latest body of work. His work combines a variety of unconventional materials\, such as meteorites\, lasers\, and bismuth\, as well as moving parts and lights to explore the ever-shifting psychological realities that this century has brought into question.\nThese pieces aim to share glimpses of what we are not aware of through ordinary channels: realms influenced by dreams\, meditation\, hypnosis\, therapy\, psychedelics\, the subconscious\, science\, metaphysics\, mysticism\, technology\, theology\, spirituality\, and ontology. These are multimedia assemblages\, refined from extraordinary materials and objects; enhanced with phenomenal elements: previous works have gone into space\, contain the oldest known life\, produce lightning\, employ human blood etc. Such novelties assist in skirting the edge of five senses\, to flirt with unique perceptions.

SUMMARY:Torch-Fired Silver Clay Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to make sterling-silver jewelry without hammering or soldering in this workshop with jewelry artist\, Luiza Grandchamp. Using silver metal clay\, a clay-like material made of fine particles of sterling silver\, water\, and a nontoxic binder\, participants will mold\, texture\, and layer the material to make a pendant using simple tools. Students will be provided with a few\, colorful cubic-zirconia stones to make their pieces glitz. The work will then be dried and fired using a torch to burn away the binder and leave a unique object that is 96% pure silver. The finished\, torch-fired silver pendants will be polished and hung on a sterling-silver chain.\nNote: The workshop takes place in person and inside the HCCC building. Space is limited to a maximum of 12 participants.

DESCRIPTION:Koslov Larsen is pleased to present Sun to Earth\, the gallery’s third solo presentation by artist Brenda Biondo. Combining several series of Biondo’s works\, Sun to Earth introduces new ways of looking at common subjects while challenging viewers’ perception of color and three-dimensional space. The works explored throughout the show focus on atmospheric phenomena and other ephemeral components of the natural world. Unnatural (Texas Tumbleweeds) and Prairie Wheels study the interconnectedness of humans and flora\, inspired by the iconic tumbleweed\, an invasive species brought inadvertently to the United States in the 1870s by Eastern European settlers. Influenced heavily by James Turrell’s Skyspaces\, Perceptual Skies emphasizes the limitless potential of light as a subject and the subjectivity of perception. Biondo states\, “Using a visual language that deconstructs the sky portion of the landscape helps articulate questions about how we engage with our environment and the emotional and psychological effects natural light has on humans.” The images in the series follow the formal aesthetics of modern painting\, particularly minimalism\, while emphasizing the ambiguity between the real and the reproduced.\nSun to Earth will be on view at Koslov Larsen from May 3 – June 21\, 2024.

Wear is inspired by her combined interests in Cubist and early 20th Century sculpture with natural forms found in her garden.\n“With her latest series\, Tracye Wear pushes the scale limitations of the ceramic arts while reveling in the life-affirming forms of nature. Not thrown on a potter’s wheel\, these contours are molded\, shaped\, and coil-built\, but become organic beings. Decidedly of the hand\, these vessels’ surfaces are smoothed and rounded yet often animated by the controlled indentations of human fingers.\nTransferring her real-life skills with plants\, soil\, water\, and sunlight from her home’s backyard\, she enters a related studio terrain of pliable clay\, moisture\, the alchemy of glazes\, and finally intense heat. By reenacting the mysteries of how vegetation sprouts and thrives as transformed by photosynthesis\, Wear introduces a verdant vocabulary of seeds\, tendrils\, leaves\, and blossoms to spiraling\, bulbous\, and seemingly pregnant vessels.\nThe artist resists the allure of boldly colored and glossy glazes\, for the most part\, instead seeking the subtleties inherent in transition and gradation. Her experimentation with the layer upon layer of colored glazes—when applied to protruding ribs and sinking recesses—embraces the chemical interactions and revelations that result from the extreme temperatures of high-firing. Throughout his career\, Theaster Gates has soulfully elevated our understanding of Black labor\, materials\, place\, and community to revitalize underrecognized neighborhoods by combining urban planning and a multifaceted art practice. His work powerfully highlights the true value Black spaces hold—although often devalued—as sites of American resilience\, liberation\, and redemption. Gates is a shape-shifter\, a world-builder\, and an artist who singularly connects the dots in both poetic and pragmatic ways. For over 20 years he has worked to transform the Southside of Chicago through various initiatives aimed at preserving and continuing the neighborhood’s vital role as a site for Black creativity. His multifaceted practice\, which demonstrates the dual importance of building community and exposing power structures\, has made him one of the most significant artists working in our time.

SUMMARY:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is the artist’s first solo museum presentation in the United States. Across an installation\, a video\, and a series of commissioned sculptures\, Erlanger continues her decade-long disruption of the “semiotics of suburbia.” In her practice\, Erlanger thinks of the home as a greater ecosystem containing not only houses but also their surrounding infrastructures and interior architectures.\nAt Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH)\, massive illuminated planet sculptures map the suburban landscape\, positioning the development of home as an environmental force in itself. These new works explore “speculative memory”—how progress can only be understood through hindsight—and what this psychic limitation implies for the artist. Viewers will then move to new diorama sculptures that play on an institutional language of presentation\, positioning the enclosed scenes as already-past. Here\, Erlanger proposes both impossible architectures and terrestrial forms created using strategies of model-making. These works are each marked by changes in season\, emphasizing receding memories of a once-diverse climate.\nThe exhibition culminates in a sitcom set\, riffing on the psychology of interiors as well as acting as a platform to watch Erlanger’s new short film Appliance. The film dovetails recent research into the history and cultural significance of domestic technologies\, such as the shower or washing machine\, with a specific focus on how their operations have been considered interchangeably with human bodily functions. In our age of “polycrisis\,” wherein multiple seismic events occur simultaneously\, If Today Were Tomorrow provides a framework for thinking about the porousness of interior and exterior\, self and non-self\, body and home.\nOlivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow will be accompanied by a catalogue published by Hatje Cantz containing newly commissioned texts about the artist’s practice\, as well as contributions focusing on the interplay between architecture\, psychology\, and science fiction.\nSupport\nMajor support for Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is provided by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.\nContemporary Arts Museum of Houston is funded in part by the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.

SUMMARY:Gabriel Lester: Odeon
DESCRIPTION:The Blaffer Art Museum is proud to present the first solo museum exhibition in the United States of preeminent European artist Gabriel Lester\, who has gained an international standing for his art\, performance\, and film as well as his dynamic public art installations. Across his now decades-long career\, Lester has developed a captivating cinematic lens through which to see and imagine the world – consistently locating wonder in the seemingly stolid and mundane. For this exhibition Lester is most interested in the interplay between light and shadow\, as well as the seen and unseen\, as he responds to Houston and the fossil fuel industry that so deeply sheathes the region.\nIn the title installation StarStruck\, a dark\, viscous pool of oil is continually interrupted by droplets of water and corresponding flares of brilliant light – piercing a thick chamber of shadow with illuminating transmission. This waking effect is further articulated in the neighboring video sculpture Cosmic Call\, where the artist chases amorphous scenes of the universe through effervescent\, yet ultra low-resolution LED monitors to create a mesmerizing\, if highly elusive display. The capacity for light to simultaneously lead and lose us is expanded in the charmingly immersive installation How to Act as flickering colors surround us – pulsing to the soundtracks of various genres of film and television. The result is familiar and uncanny at once\, evoking the abstract languages of televisual entertainment while also making them strange and disorienting. Early modes of cinema flash before our eyes in the adjacent series Jump Cut\, where methodically rotating cubes house a variety of laser cut tableaux – coming into focus just long enough to dance away\, over and over again. Persistence of vision and retinal residue accumulates here\, propelling the art to work as much before your eyes\, as within and behind them. The final installation marries optical with environmental effect as rays of sun shine through the increasingly perforated ebony towers of Bambaataa\, projecting floating holo-graphic cubes that speak to the fleetingness of so-called structure. Taken and received as a whole\, this exhibition pierces heavy\, weighted geometries and their absolutes with the delightful\, if perplexing magic of discovery.

Employing counter- cartography as an approach\, Dayrit charts histories of imperialism\, industrialization\, and systems of subjugation that shape geographical boundaries and cultural narratives around the world. In Summer 2024\, Blaffer will present Dayrit’s first solo museum exhibition in the United States with embroidered tapestries\, paintings\, and sculpture. The exhibition will be accompanied by Countermapping Workshops in Houston to excavate histories of imperialism\, extraction\, and displacement among historically marginalized people\, while summoning new imaginaries that recognize the overlapping global struggles and resistance.

DESCRIPTION:BOX 13 ArtSpace is pleased to present four exhibitions opening May 31\, 2024 6pm to 9pm.\nIn the Front BOX gallery we feature artist Jennifer Greenwell and her show “Let Us Not Forget”. “Let Us Not Forget” is an installation tribute through which Jennifer Greenwell honors the 75 obituaries featured shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic in The Washington Post article titled Faces of Death. Then in our Back BOX gallery “Confluencia” is an exhibition that envisions cultural confluence as a central part of Texan life. In this solo exhibition intermedia artist Christine Adame presents a series of flags and drawings that elevate multifaceted\, personal histories as evidence of belonging. In our Window BOX gallery where artist Lucy Carranza creates a work entitled “Altar para la Tierra” an immersive installation that centers around an Ofrenda-inspired altar. It transcends traditional art boundaries\, blending infrared photography\, found objects\, and hand-crafted elements. Christy Wittmer takes over our Upstairs Box gallery space. Here fragile sculptures consider time and impermanence in her exhibition entitled “brittle as bone”.\nThe exhibitions continue through June 29\, 2024. An Opening Reception will be held on Friday\, May 31\, 2024 6pm to 9pm at BOX 13 ArtSpace\, 6700 Harrisburg\, Houston\, TX 77011.
