SUMMARY:It Is Magic
DESCRIPTION:Deb and Sandy are auditioning Tim for the role of the Wolf in a production of The Three Little Pigs\, but there’s a mysterious haze in the basement of the Mortier Civic Playhouse and that\, in addition to interruptions from the director of ‘the Scottish play’ that’s having its opening night upstairs\, is making things difficult. Then\, the mysterious Liz shows up throwing the room into utter chaos\, revealing the deep\, ancient evil at the heart of the community theater audition process.\nIt Is Magic is the latest play by Mickle Maher\, writer of such Catastrophic favorites as There Is a Happiness That Morning Is\, The Hunchback Variations\, Song About Himself\, the world premiere of Small Ball\, co-produced by former Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey\, and others.\nDirected by core artist Jeff Miller\, whose past directing credits include Catastrophic hits Buried Child\, Curse of the Starving Class\, Baby Screams Miracle\, and The Book of Grace.

SUMMARY:Beetlejuice
DESCRIPTION:He earned his stripes on Broadway… now the ghost-with-the-most is coming to Austin.\nIt’s showtime! Based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved film\, this hilarious musical tells the story of Lydia Deetz\, a strange and unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon with a thing for stripes. With an irreverent book\, an astonishing set\, and a score that’s out of this Netherworld\, BEETLEJUICE is “SCREAMINGLY GOOD FUN!” (Variety). And under its uproarious surface (six feet under\, to be exact)\, it’s a remarkably touching show about family\, love\, and making the most of every Day-O!\nBeetlejuice contains strong language\, mature references\, and a lot of the crazy\, inappropriate stuff you would expect from a deranged demon. Recommended for ages 13 and up.\nPresented by the Memorial Hermann Broadway at the Hobby Center

He hires a skeptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story to exorcise the fear that grips his soul. Things begin innocently enough\, but as they reach further into Arthur’s darkest memories\, they find themselves caught up in a world of eerie marshes and moaning winds… Susan Hill’s acclaimed ghost story is alive and well in this spine-tingler of a play!

SUMMARY:Beyond Broadway Series: Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age
DESCRIPTION:In Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age\, he covers all the bases: sex\, death and bacchanalia\, with a set list as eclectic as the man himself. Songs from Cabaret authors Kander and Ebb blend with contemporary favourites and even a self-penned paean against plastic surgery. ‘I am literally the only person on American TV who has not had botox!’ he quips. He also discusses the effects of gravity\, the time the mum from the Brady Bunch punched him\, and what his dog taught him about the quality of life.

SUMMARY:Divine Intervention (Yadon Ilaheyya)
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Elia Suleiman\n(France/Morocco/Germany/Occupied Palestinian\nTerritory\, 2002\, 92 min.\, in Arabic\, English\, and\nHebrew with English subtitles\, digital)\nFriday\, July 19\, 7:00 p.m. BROWN\nIntroduced by Dr. Tish Stringer\, MFAH lead projectionist\nWriter/director Elia Suleiman stars in this collection of cinematic vignettes capturing the absurdity of everyday life under occupation. A dark comedy in the style of Jacques Tati or Buster Keaton\, Suleiman pokes fun at tragic situations and encourages us to do the same in ironic\, imaginative scenes about garbage\, neighbors\, and dating. The surreal logic highlighted in the film played out in real time during its release more than 20 years ago as Divine Intervention seemed poised to secure an Oscar nomination after winning the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes\, but was rejected by the Motion Picture Academy because entries must be nominated by their nation of origin\, and Palestine was not recognized as a nation. — Dr. Tish Stringer

SUMMARY:Happiness: Find What You Love and Let It Kill You (Online)
DESCRIPTION:What if “happiness” is found most often in the places which demand sacrifice and surrender?\nWe are urged to be happy. But what is happiness? Does it ever fall under our control\, or are we at the mercy of the unknown forces within and without us? Join Dr. James Hollis for an exploration of our expectations regarding happiness and the role that not being happy plays in our experiencing happiness. What does it mean when we are not “happy”? Have we failed at something? What is the balance between happiness and suffering? What if “meaning” is often found in the areas least happy for us? What if “happiness” is found most often in the places which demand sacrifice and surrender? Together we will explore the popular expectation that we are supposed to be happy\, and reframe the conversation in terms of meaning – happiness is transient and contextual\, while meaning abides and makes all things worthwhile.\nJames Hollis\, PhD\, is a Zurich trained Jungian analyst with a practice in Washington\, D.C. He is the author of eighteen books translated into twenty languages\, the latest titled The Broken Mirror: Refracted Visions of Ourselves.

DESCRIPTION:Have fun as we examine and question assumptions and stereotypes about the sexuality of people in mid and later life.\nJoin us for an in-depth discussion of the idea of “sexual scripts” – ideals we learn in our formative years that not only instruct each of us how to think and feel about sex\, but also condition how we act and identify as sexual beings. Many life changes – the loss of a partner through death or divorce\, the experience of a major illness\, encountering different attitudes towards sexuality held by our children (or even grandchildren) – can call us to identify\, challenge\, and transform these sexual scripts. Through reflecting on our own narratives\, encountering perspectives on sexuality throughout the ages\, questioning what is meant by “good sex\,” and exploring the sorts of sexual decisions contemplated by those over 50\, we’ll have fun as we examine and question assumptions and stereotypes about the sexuality of people in mid and later life.

SUMMARY:Cian Dayrit: Liberties Were Taken
DESCRIPTION:The phrase “counter-cartographies” describes Manila-based artist Cian Dayrit interdisciplinary practice of transforming historic maps into portraits of contemporary social conditions. Employing counter- cartography as an approach\, Dayrit charts histories of imperialism\, industrialization\, and systems of subjugation that shape geographical boundaries and cultural narratives around the world. In Summer 2024\, Blaffer will present Dayrit’s first solo museum exhibition in the United States with embroidered tapestries\, paintings\, and sculpture. The exhibition will be accompanied by Countermapping Workshops in Houston to excavate histories of imperialism\, extraction\, and displacement among historically marginalized people\, while summoning new imaginaries that recognize the overlapping global struggles and resistance.

SUMMARY:Gabriel Lester: Odeon
DESCRIPTION:The Blaffer Art Museum is proud to present the first solo museum exhibition in the United States of preeminent European artist Gabriel Lester\, who has gained an international standing for his art\, performance\, and film as well as his dynamic public art installations. Across his now decades-long career\, Lester has developed a captivating cinematic lens through which to see and imagine the world – consistently locating wonder in the seemingly stolid and mundane. For this exhibition Lester is most interested in the interplay between light and shadow\, as well as the seen and unseen\, as he responds to Houston and the fossil fuel industry that so deeply sheathes the region.\nIn the title installation StarStruck\, a dark\, viscous pool of oil is continually interrupted by droplets of water and corresponding flares of brilliant light – piercing a thick chamber of shadow with illuminating transmission. This waking effect is further articulated in the neighboring video sculpture Cosmic Call\, where the artist chases amorphous scenes of the universe through effervescent\, yet ultra low-resolution LED monitors to create a mesmerizing\, if highly elusive display. The capacity for light to simultaneously lead and lose us is expanded in the charmingly immersive installation How to Act as flickering colors surround us – pulsing to the soundtracks of various genres of film and television. The result is familiar and uncanny at once\, evoking the abstract languages of televisual entertainment while also making them strange and disorienting. Early modes of cinema flash before our eyes in the adjacent series Jump Cut\, where methodically rotating cubes house a variety of laser cut tableaux – coming into focus just long enough to dance away\, over and over again. Persistence of vision and retinal residue accumulates here\, propelling the art to work as much before your eyes\, as within and behind them. The final installation marries optical with environmental effect as rays of sun shine through the increasingly perforated ebony towers of Bambaataa\, projecting floating holo-graphic cubes that speak to the fleetingness of so-called structure. Taken and received as a whole\, this exhibition pierces heavy\, weighted geometries and their absolutes with the delightful\, if perplexing magic of discovery.

SUMMARY:Through Time
DESCRIPTION:Andrew Durham Gallery is thrilled to announce the opening of its upcoming art exhibition\, “Through Time”\, a collective show featuring works by artists Jill Bedgood\, Carter Ernst\, Bill Haveron\, Jeff Jennings\, Kelli Scott Kelly\, Scott Madison\, Steve Murphy\, Becky Newsom\, Ann Stautberg\, Bob Russell and Frank X. Tolbert 2. The exhibition’s opening reception will be held June 22 from 6-8pm.\nThe “Through Time” exhibition will showcase how the artists’ individual perspectives and techniques have evolved over the years. This includes contemporary paintings\, sculptures\, photography\, installations\, and more. The diversity in medium and style reflects the myriad ways in which time has influenced and shaped artistic expression.\nJill Bedgood draws inspiration from her life experiences and places a strong emphasis on preserving objects through memorialization. By exploring the cyclical nature of life in her art\, she evokes nostalgic sentiments that prompt viewers to reflect on their memories and contemplate their mortality.\nCarter Ernst finds comfort in the immediacy of clay\, Ernst uses her sculpture creations to convey the beauty and urgency of nature while injecting a sense of humor necessary as a coping mechanism for navigating the complexities of the world.\nBill Haveron develops stories that draw from his imagination and contain subtle moral lessons. His art transports audiences to a fantastical realm where animals and plants possess human-like qualities and profound insights. Haveron’s pieces encourage viewers to engage with the alternate reality he has crafted\, offering both entertainment and opportunities for reflection.\nJeff Jennings’ work seamlessly integrates architectural elements and geometric shapes\, resulting in playful compositions that captivate the viewers’ eye. Through his use of color\, Jennings creates visually striking pieces that are dynamic and evoke intrigue.\nKelli Scott Kelley has been painting and collaging\, using vintage linens and other repurposed fabric supports\, which allows for a more ecological art making practice. Her pieces are inspired by the personal\, psychological and the sociopolitical. Kelley is moved by the exquisite beauty in the world\, as well as the absurdity and ugliness. Her art practice is a means to mine and express deep truths about the impending demise of the natural world.\nScott Madison is a sculptor who makes custom boxes\, furniture and lamps from various metals including aluminum\, brass\, bronze and stainless steel. He meticulously constructs his sculptures\, paying careful consideration to the texture\, shape\, and composition of each piece.\nSteve Murphy engages in the classical elements of sculpture\, form\, volume\, surface and edge. His body of work is the result of a continued reductive investigation of those sculptural elements.\nBecky Newsom creates sculpted painted canvases that result in intricate and delicate works of art that capture the essence of organic forms.\nAnn Stautberg photography largely stems from her home\, she photographs the sky and botanical silhouetted shapes as her garden is an ongoing source of inspiration. Each photograph is printed with archival inks onto stretched canvas\, she then tints the pieces with translucent photographic oils by hand.\nBob Russell is fascinated with the complex issues that make up one’s everyday life\, and the simple beauty one finds in nature when the time is taken to observe these things. Whether it’s a daunting cloud formation before a spring storm\, or an autumnal field of rust-colored grasses that line the highway blowing in the wind\, the intricate patterns on the backs of dragonfly larvae\, or errant marks made on freeway exits by truckers\, as the tires try to stay the course.\nFrank X. Tolbert 2 artistic career is marked by his ability to mix various mediums\, techniques\, and themes seamlessly. His works often delve into the intersection of nature\, culture\, and human experiences\, resulting in visually stunning and thought provoking pieces. Through his art\, Tolbert has consistently pushed boundaries\, challenging conventional norms and inviting viewers to engage in a deeper dialogue.\nThe opening reception on June 22 will offer attendees a first look at the exhibition\, an opportunity to meet the artists\, and engage in enlightening conversations about the works on display. Complimentary refreshments will be served during the event.\nThe “Through Time” exhibition will run from June 22 to August 18 at Andrew Durham Gallery. The gallery is open from Wednesday to Saturday\, 11 am – 6 pm.

SUMMARY:Theaster Gates: The Gift and The Renege
DESCRIPTION:Theaster Gates: The Gift and The Renege presents work by the acclaimed Chicago-based artist\, featuring large-scale paintings\, sculptures\, and installations that highlight the seen and unseen dynamics of Freedmen’s Town in Houston’s Fourth Ward. Throughout his career\, Theaster Gates has soulfully elevated our understanding of Black labor\, materials\, place\, and community to revitalize underrecognized neighborhoods by combining urban planning and a multifaceted art practice. His work powerfully highlights the true value Black spaces hold—although often devalued—as sites of American resilience\, liberation\, and redemption. Gates is a shape-shifter\, a world-builder\, and an artist who singularly connects the dots in both poetic and pragmatic ways. For over 20 years he has worked to transform the Southside of Chicago through various initiatives aimed at preserving and continuing the neighborhood’s vital role as a site for Black creativity. His multifaceted practice\, which demonstrates the dual importance of building community and exposing power structures\, has made him one of the most significant artists working in our time.

SUMMARY:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is the artist’s first solo museum presentation in the United States. Across an installation\, a video\, and a series of commissioned sculptures\, Erlanger continues her decade-long disruption of the “semiotics of suburbia.” In her practice\, Erlanger thinks of the home as a greater ecosystem containing not only houses but also their surrounding infrastructures and interior architectures.\nAt Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH)\, massive illuminated planet sculptures map the suburban landscape\, positioning the development of home as an environmental force in itself. These new works explore “speculative memory”—how progress can only be understood through hindsight—and what this psychic limitation implies for the artist. Viewers will then move to new diorama sculptures that play on an institutional language of presentation\, positioning the enclosed scenes as already-past. Here\, Erlanger proposes both impossible architectures and terrestrial forms created using strategies of model-making. These works are each marked by changes in season\, emphasizing receding memories of a once-diverse climate.\nThe exhibition culminates in a sitcom set\, riffing on the psychology of interiors as well as acting as a platform to watch Erlanger’s new short film Appliance. The film dovetails recent research into the history and cultural significance of domestic technologies\, such as the shower or washing machine\, with a specific focus on how their operations have been considered interchangeably with human bodily functions. In our age of “polycrisis\,” wherein multiple seismic events occur simultaneously\, If Today Were Tomorrow provides a framework for thinking about the porousness of interior and exterior\, self and non-self\, body and home.\nOlivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow will be accompanied by a catalogue published by Hatje Cantz containing newly commissioned texts about the artist’s practice\, as well as contributions focusing on the interplay between architecture\, psychology\, and science fiction.\nSupport\nMajor support for Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is provided by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.\nContemporary Arts Museum of Houston is funded in part by the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.

SUMMARY:Brenda Biondo: Sun to Earth
DESCRIPTION:Koslov Larsen is pleased to present Sun to Earth\, the gallery’s third solo presentation by artist Brenda Biondo. Combining several series of Biondo’s works\, Sun to Earth introduces new ways of looking at common subjects while challenging viewers’ perception of color and three-dimensional space. The works explored throughout the show focus on atmospheric phenomena and other ephemeral components of the natural world. Unnatural (Texas Tumbleweeds) and Prairie Wheels study the interconnectedness of humans and flora\, inspired by the iconic tumbleweed\, an invasive species brought inadvertently to the United States in the 1870s by Eastern European settlers. Influenced heavily by James Turrell’s Skyspaces\, Perceptual Skies emphasizes the limitless potential of light as a subject and the subjectivity of perception. Biondo states\, “Using a visual language that deconstructs the sky portion of the landscape helps articulate questions about how we engage with our environment and the emotional and psychological effects natural light has on humans.” The images in the series follow the formal aesthetics of modern painting\, particularly minimalism\, while emphasizing the ambiguity between the real and the reproduced.\nSun to Earth will be on view at Koslov Larsen from May 3 – June 21\, 2024.

SUMMARY:Facing Survival | David Kassan
DESCRIPTION:This compelling and transformative exhibition features the masterful paintings and drawings of acclaimed artist David Kassan\, capturing the poignant stories and portraits of Holocaust survivors.\n“Facing Survival” stands as a profound testament to the enduring power of art in narrating the untold stories of resilience and survival. Through the evocative paintings and sketches meticulously crafted by Kassan\, the exhibition unveils the profound journey of more than two dozen Holocaust survivors. By intertwining the visual representation of the survivors with the sketches revealing Kassan’s artistic process\, this exhibition transcends conventional forms of testimony\, forging a poignant visual language that surpasses the limitations of spoken or written word.\nPreceding the creation of each portrait\, Kassan deeply engaged with the survivors\, filming their testimonies and comprehending their intricate histories. His profound connection with his subjects enables him to capture not just their present visages\, but the essence of their harrowing pasts. The lifelike imagery pulsates with their spirit\, pain and dignity\, transforming these paintings into testaments of resilience and reflections of lives shaped by unspeakable violence.\nMoreover\, “Facing Survival” aspires to transcend the incomprehensible statistics—such as the unfathomable six million lives lost—to highlight the individuality of each survivor. It is a testament that defies generalization\, seeking to evoke a profound emotional connection\, to allow us to bear witness to the miraculous existence of each singular soul.
