DESCRIPTION:Developed over 4 years and across multiple locations in Texas and New York\, At the Still Point comprises over 70 sculptural works employing various weave structures. Evolving from an exploration of the canvas – a woven textile – into a study of composition with space\, the work contemplates what exists between.\nAt the Still Point will be presented in two parts\nPART 1: Sep 6–Oct 18\, 2024\nPART 2: Nov 1–Dec 13\, 2024\nOPENING + ARTIST RECEPTION Fri\, Sep 6\, 6-8PM\nARTIST HOURS\nArtist Hour 1: Fri\, Oct 4\, 6-7PM\nArtist Hour 2: Fri\, Nov 1\, 6-7PM\nArtist Hour 3: Fri\, Dec 6\, 6-7PM\nGALLERY HOURS\nMon-Fri: 12-8PM\nSat-Sun: 10-3PM\nKristin Marie Bachmann (b. 1979) is an artist from West Texas. SUMMARY:Close Your Eyes (Cerrar los ojos)
DESCRIPTION:Over three decades after the release of his previous film\, revered Spanish auteur Víctor Erice (The Spirit of the Beehive) returns with a haunting meditation on memory\, absence\, and the enduring resonance of the moving image. An aging Spanish filmmaker is asked to recount his memories of working on his final and still unfinished film. During its production\, the lead actor disappeared without a trace\, leaving in his wake a mystery that would haunt the lives of everyone associated with the film. Decades later\, an investigative TV program revives the case\, and the filmmaker reconnects with the film’s crew\, seeking closure for the actor’s disappearance and its lasting effect on their lives.

SUMMARY:Magical Lying Hour's Decadent\, Sumptuous\, Triple-Stuffed 10th Anniversary Show
DESCRIPTION:Magical Lying Hour celebrates ten years of theatrical improv by stuffing as many past participants as we physically can into Coronation theater for one night of the absurdist\, committed improv you’ve come to expect.\nYou already know the basic deal: one actor\, one improviser\, the actor doesn’t deviate from their script while the improvisers builds out a new world trying to stay within the bounds of the actor’s lines.\nWe’re bringing in some out of town heavy hitters including California’s Riley Smith and Tommy Spears as well as hometown favorites Callina Anderson\, Ruth McCleskey\, and Autumn Clack in an unforgettable night that dives into three of our favorite alternate formats of Magical Lying Hour:\nMagical Montage Hour: chaos ensues in this version of our classic show that more closely resembles a standard improv set. Actors and improvisers fly in and out of scenes with the alacrity of Ghengis Khan’s hordes with the only rule being that at least one actor and at least on improviser need to be on the stage at all times.\nMagical Groundhog Hour: Magical Lying Hour contains multitudes! Whereas we get to see the many permutations scenes can take during rehearsal you\, the audience only gets to see one! Groundhog Hour shows the variability of the actors by playing the same scene three times with different sets of performers\, and you see the wild turns the same script can take.\nMagical La Ronde Hour: Our take on the classic improv form (and classic play by Arthur Schnitzler!) Five scenes from the same play with each actor becoming an improviser in the next scene but staying as the same character. See a story unfold bit by bit in this circular theatrical format.\nIt’s going to be a spectacular night not to be repeated with over 25 performers it must be our biggest show for now and for all time.

SUMMARY:Betrayal
DESCRIPTION:by HAROLD PINTER\ndirected by SOPHIA WATT\nFrom the final meeting of two lovers to the inception of an illicit affair\, a love triangle unfolds backward as power dynamics shift in exhilarating and unexpected ways in Harold Pinter’s masterpiece. The most fundamental axioms of love and friendship are open for reassessment\, as we witness Emma\, Jerry\, and Robert navigate their own brutal and unexpected feelings about each other and themselves. SUMMARY:CRY IT OUT by Molly Smith Metzler
DESCRIPTION:A 90 minute theatre production.\nJessie and Lina may be from vastly different financial backgrounds—Jessie is Ivy-educated and of the manor born; Lina has a night-school nursing degree and terrible credit—but they have one huge thing in common: they’ve been cracked open by the love they feel for their newborns. One coffee quickly becomes a daily coffee\, as Jessie and Lina laugh through the highs and lows of motherhood. But their intimacy is punctured when a stranger who lives in the mansion up on the cliff appears in the yard… A comedy with dark edges\, Cry It Out takes an honest look at the absurdities of being home with a baby\, the power of female friendship\, the dilemma of going back to work\, and the effect class has on parenthood in America.\nDirected by Rhett Martinez and featuring Whitney Zangarine\, Jason Duga\, Chaney Moore and Sammi Sicinski.

SUMMARY:Orpheus and Gelert: A Dual Analysis of Unspeakable Loss and the Search for Meaning and Hope
DESCRIPTION:Explore how experiences of loss can teach us how to navigate the underworld – where we can find life again if we can bear the risk of getting lost ourselves. Myths and legends that talk about loss illustrate how the promise of new life is always present\, but only if we are willing to consciously enter the underworld – to willingly explore the sometimes dangerous depths of our grief. In this seminar\, we will analyze how the Greek myth of Orpheus and the Welsh tale of Llywelyn the Great’s faithful hound\, Gelert\, both address the unspeakable pain that follows experiences of loss and teach us ways of navigating the underworld – where we can find life again if we can bear the risk of getting lost ourselves. A short active imagination exercise will help us uncover the images of loss and rebirth that we are currently living.

SUMMARY:Latino cARTographies Digital Board Exhibit of Houston Artists
DESCRIPTION:We are featuring an exhibit with the University of Houston that features Latin artists through an art digital board that also features our mural. Under the leadership of Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, Director of the University of Houston’s (UH) Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies (CMALS) launched the groundbreaking digital board\, Latino cARTographies: Mapping the Past\, Present\, and Future of Houston’s Latino Visual Art. The exhibit is on display from Friday\, April 26 to December 31\, 2024.\nThis portable\, bilingual\, and interactive digital board funded by the University of Houston is the result of a three-year collaboration led by Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, with the curatorial leadership of former vice president of the National Mexican Museum of Art in Chicago\, Juana Guzman\, the CMALS Research Team\, and the International Gibson Group.\nTickets at the door are only $5 and include two other exhibits!\nClick HERE to read an article about the exhibit in Houston History Magazine.\nThe idea for Latino cARTographies began when Dr. Quiroz organized the city of Houston to host the country’s premier Latino art event\, Latino Art Now! Dr. Quiroz conceived the idea for the digital board and viewed it as a way to create a dynamic but permanent tribute to the Latino artists of Houston. She then persuaded the Gibson Group to collaborate with CMALS to achieve this goal. The result is a twenty-first-century mode to access the arts and experience culture – Latino cARTographies – that maps the past\, present\, and future of Houston’s Latino art. By utilizing technology that preserves\, represents\, and promotes Houston’s Latino visual arts and communities in an equitable and inclusive manner\, CMALS is transforming how we experience art in the twenty-first century.\nLatino cARTographies features our commissioned a mural to celebrate the many contributions of our city’s Mexican-American community. In the spirit of the great Mexican muralists\, this vibrant collective artwork\, Mexican-American History & Culture in 20th Century Houston\, highlights the places\, personalities\, concepts and events that shaped the Mexican-American community and laid the foundation for the multicultural city we live in today. Set in Connally Plaza against a dramatic backdrop of City Hall and the downtown skyline\, the mural is a cultural landmark in the historic heart of Houston. This mural spotlights 38 places\, personalities\, and events that played a key role in the growth of this community and provides recognition for the countless and essential contributions of Mexican Americans to the economy\, culture\, and vitality of our city in the 1900s. Mural artists Laura López Cano and Jesse Sifuentes\, along with key fundraisers and government officials celebrated the unveiling to Houstonians in September 2018 for National Hispanic Heritage Month. Since then\, we have several outdoor activities being celebrated around the mural for National Hispanic Heritage Month and host field trips telling the stories behind the mural. The vibrant mural\, located at 1100 Bagby Street\, is now complemented by the interactive\, digital board that is inside our museum gallery.\nAbout the Exhibitor: Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies\, University of Houston\nThe Center for Mexican American and Latino/a Studies (CMALS) at the University of Houston was established in 1972 as an interdisciplinary academic program encompassing the liberal arts\, education and social sciences focusing on the Mexican American and broader Latino experience in the U.S. Its mission is to advance knowledge\, promote critical thinking and foster the value of service to the community. This involves designing a broad spectrum of public and scholarly programs. Located within the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences\, CMALS has evolved into an academic unit with several major components: teaching\, research and publications\, recruitment and retention\, leadership training\, academic advising and community service.\nThank you to the following:\nMarisela Martinez\, Ed.D. SUMMARY:Facing Survival | David Kassan
DESCRIPTION:This compelling and transformative exhibition features the masterful paintings and drawings of acclaimed artist David Kassan\, capturing the poignant stories and portraits of Holocaust survivors.\n“Facing Survival” stands as a profound testament to the enduring power of art in narrating the untold stories of resilience and survival. Through the evocative paintings and sketches meticulously crafted by Kassan\, the exhibition unveils the profound journey of more than two dozen Holocaust survivors. By intertwining the visual representation of the survivors with the sketches revealing Kassan’s artistic process\, this exhibition transcends conventional forms of testimony\, forging a poignant visual language that surpasses the limitations of spoken or written word.\nPreceding the creation of each portrait\, Kassan deeply engaged with the survivors\, filming their testimonies and comprehending their intricate histories. His profound connection with his subjects enables him to capture not just their present visages\, but the essence of their harrowing pasts. The lifelike imagery pulsates with their spirit\, pain and dignity\, transforming these paintings into testaments of resilience and reflections of lives shaped by unspeakable violence.\nMoreover\, “Facing Survival” aspires to transcend the incomprehensible statistics—such as the unfathomable six million lives lost—to highlight the individuality of each survivor. It is a testament that defies generalization\, seeking to evoke a profound emotional connection\, to allow us to bear witness to the miraculous existence of each singular soul.
