SUMMARY:Proposal for a 28th Amendment? Is it Possible to Amend an Unequal System?
DESCRIPTION:Proposal for a 28th Amendment? Is it Possible to Amend an Unequal System? is a participatory installation by artist collaborators Alex Strada and Tali Keren. It critically examines the U.S. Constitution and creates space for intervention and political imagination.\nThe artists ask visitors to engage critically with the U.S. Constitution and pose two questions: What 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution would you propose? And: Do you think it is possible to amend an unequal system?\nThey note that the U.S Constitution\, which opens with the phrase ‘We the People\,’ was written in 1787 by and for wealthy white male property owners\, and that to date\, only 27 amendments have been ratified to change the document. Their questions illuminate this legacy and ask for a collective response interrogating the Constitution’s embedded issues of structural racism\, settler-colonial violence\, heteropatriarchy\, reproductive injustice\, labor inequities\, and non-human animal and climate neglect.\nCentral to the installation are sonic soapbox sculptures that build upon the history of the soapbox as a site of collective struggle\, while also emphasizing listening\, mutuality\, and access. These objects emit an in-progress oral archive of responses to the project’s questions.\nCommunity members are invited to become part of the installation by stepping up onto the soapboxes\, listening to the archival recordings\, and adding their responses\, which will be collected and added to the project’s oral archive to be shared in future iterations of the work.\nThe work was initially commissioned by the Queens Museum and site-specific iterations\, and it was then traveled to the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco and the Aldrich Contemporary in CT.\nThe installation will open September 27th and will be on view through January 26th\, concluding a week after the January Inauguration in Washington\, D.C. PRH and the artists are interested in expanding the project’s reach so that diverse audiences around Houston can add their voices to the project’s oral archive. Prairie View A&M Univerisity Architecture Department\, content creation lab\, has generously partnered with PRH to build the soap boxes.

DESCRIPTION:River on Fire is a multidisciplinary exhibition showcasing the work of 14 artists who respond to environmental crises and climate change. Curated by Ashley DeHoyos Sauder\, the exhibition draws inspiration from a long history of environmental activism related to river fires across the nation— events that have significantly shaped understandings of ecological preservation and environmental advocacy.\nThe featured artists: Carolina Aranibar-Fernández (San Francisco\, CA)\, Brandon Ballengée (New Orleans\, LA)\, Alana Bartol (Calgary\, Alberta\, Canada)\, Christina Battle (Edmonton\, Alberta\, Canada)\, Hannah Chalew (New Orleans\, LA)\, Lili Chin (New York\, NY)\, Willow Naomi Curry (Houston\, TX)\, Morel Doucet (Miami\, FL)\, Heather L. Johnson (Houston\, TX)\, Ayanna Jolivet Mccloud (Houston\, TX)\, Laura Napier (Ann Arbor\, MI)\, Joe Robles IV (Pasadena\, TX)\, Manuel Alejandro Rodríguez-Delgado (Roswell\, NM/Puerto Rico)\, and Zuyva Sevilla (Albuquerque\, NM) bring attention to pressing ecological issues. Through artistic research and lived experience\, they highlight the unique environmental challenges facing local\, regional\, and national landscapes.\nThrough creative action and building a historical understanding of these types of cataclysmic events\, River on Fire seeks to provide a platform for conversation and awareness of ongoing environmental issues. The relationship between living in a city dominated by industry and co-existing with environmental disaster in the wake of climate change has brought the city’s resilience into question and increased concerns over the continuation of industry practices that place people and the natural world at risk. As Houston continues to grow\, the effects of climate change have become increasingly severe— record heat waves\, flooding\, more frequent and intense hurricanes\, and massive power outages are clear signs that we already have to confront new and different ways of being. River on Fire asks: how do artists and creative practices shift the narrative and introduce possible solutions in a city with such a complex ecosystem?\nRiver on Fire includes internal evaluations of DW exhibition practices and implementation of sustainable exhibition design developed through a year-long Climate Coaching Pilot with the Teiger Foundation and Rute Collaborative\, a Canadian-based environmental consultant. The impetus for the project comes in part from Houston’s entwined history with the oil\, gas\, and chemical industries and the curator’s youth spent living in Houston-area neighborhoods close to these industries.\nRiver on Fire is presented in conversation with the eighth iteration of the Texas Biennial The Last Sky\, co-curated by Ashley DeHoyos Sauder\, Erika Mei Chua Holum\, and Coka Treviño. This full evening production will feature two works: Batimento Cardiaco and Vessel (excerpt). Both works demonstrate Group Acorde’s ability to create art collaborations that display the company’s diverse artistry and artists.\nBatimento Cardiaco is a new work by composer Thomas Helton in collaboration with contemporary choreography and visual art by Brazilian artist Andre Amaral. This work is a conversation between a sound score for several different instruments that will include improvisation\, pulsating sounds and out of sync rhythms\, contemporary dance choreography\, and a set design made of recycled materials. The work will feature three more musicians from the local ensemble Relative Dissonance in a never-before-seen collaboration between Group Acorde and a local musical ensemble. Batimento Cardiaco is Portuguese for “heartbeat.” Studies have shown that experiences with natural disasters can affect one’s mental health and have an impact on one’s sleep and overall mood. Physically\, traumatic experiences such as preparing for a hurricane to hit one’s city\, going through it and the aftermath of it can cause heart palpitations to temporary or permanent heart damage. All experiences that Houstonians tend to be very familiar with. On the contrary\, music and dance have been proven to normalize one’s heart rate as sound processing begins in the brainstem\, which also controls the rate of one’s heartbeat and respiration. Movement increases cardiovascular endurance elevating awareness to an individual’s breathing. Vessel (excerpt) is the first time Natasha Manley collaborates with the company. Natasha is a soprano and this new work displays her vocal abilities as a classically trained musician that is exploring different sounds and their relationship to movement and dance. Beat offers a unique channel of information and awareness to traumatic experiences and its effects on one’s mental health with the heartbeat as the center and inspiration for both works.\nBeat features performances by Roberta Paixao Cortes\, Lindsey McGill\, Thomas Helton\, Natasha Manley and artists of Relative Dissonance. DESCRIPTION:Marking a major shift in Maloney’s practice\, Scenes From Films I’ll Never Make\, introduces a selection of 10 new oil paintings made by the artist within the last year. As the title suggests\, a lot of the pieces were first conceived as ideas for films that for one reason or another never came to be. Rather than letting these stories fall into the ether\, Maloney breathes new life into them with his brush\, imbuing his images with elements of surrealism or abstraction to help portray the psychological state of his characters. This work stems from Maloney’s own battles with mental illness\, isolation\, and anxiety. However he balances everything with revelry in the comical absurdity of modern life. Maloney’s ultimate concern is with the power of stories and how we as an audience connect to them.\nThe exhibition is on view at Sabine Street’s East Corridor Gallery through November 2.

Under the leadership of Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, Director of the University of Houston’s (UH) Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies (CMALS) launched the groundbreaking digital board\, Latino cARTographies: Mapping the Past\, Present\, and Future of Houston’s Latino Visual Art. The exhibit is on display from Friday\, April 26 to December 31\, 2024.\nThis portable\, bilingual\, and interactive digital board funded by the University of Houston is the result of a three-year collaboration led by Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, with the curatorial leadership of former vice president of the National Mexican Museum of Art in Chicago\, Juana Guzman\, the CMALS Research Team\, and the International Gibson Group.\nTickets at the door are only $5 and include two other exhibits!\nClick HERE to read an article about the exhibit in Houston History Magazine.\nThe idea for Latino cARTographies began when Dr. Quiroz organized the city of Houston to host the country’s premier Latino art event\, Latino Art Now! She then persuaded the Gibson Group to collaborate with CMALS to achieve this goal. By utilizing technology that preserves\, represents\, and promotes Houston’s Latino visual arts and communities in an equitable and inclusive manner\, CMALS is transforming how we experience art in the twenty-first century.\nLatino cARTographies features our commissioned a mural to celebrate the many contributions of our city’s Mexican-American community. In the spirit of the great Mexican muralists\, this vibrant collective artwork\, Mexican-American History & Culture in 20th Century Houston\, highlights the places\, personalities\, concepts and events that shaped the Mexican-American community and laid the foundation for the multicultural city we live in today. Set in Connally Plaza against a dramatic backdrop of City Hall and the downtown skyline\, the mural is a cultural landmark in the historic heart of Houston. This mural spotlights 38 places\, personalities\, and events that played a key role in the growth of this community and provides recognition for the countless and essential contributions of Mexican Americans to the economy\, culture\, and vitality of our city in the 1900s. Mural artists Laura López Cano and Jesse Sifuentes\, along with key fundraisers and government officials celebrated the unveiling to Houstonians in September 2018 for National Hispanic Heritage Month. Since then\, we have several outdoor activities being celebrated around the mural for National Hispanic Heritage Month and host field trips telling the stories behind the mural. The vibrant mural\, located at 1100 Bagby Street\, is now complemented by the interactive\, digital board that is inside our museum gallery.\nAbout the Exhibitor: Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies\, University of Houston\nThe Center for Mexican American and Latino/a Studies (CMALS) at the University of Houston was established in 1972 as an interdisciplinary academic program encompassing the liberal arts\, education and social sciences focusing on the Mexican American and broader Latino experience in the U.S. Its mission is to advance knowledge\, promote critical thinking and foster the value of service to the community. This involves designing a broad spectrum of public and scholarly programs.
