SUMMARY:The Pillowman
DESCRIPTION:In a dark and dingy interrogation room in an unnamed totalitarian state\, Katurian is questioned when the gruesome content of his short stories begins to resemble a series of bizarre murders occurring in his town. When the police also take his mentally impaired brother into custody\, Katurian must decide how best to protect himself\, his brother\, and his stories. With echoes of Stoppard\, Kafka\, and the Brothers Grimm\, this dark and provocative tale explores the very nature of nurture.

SUMMARY:Beetlejuice
DESCRIPTION:He earned his stripes on Broadway… now the ghost-with-the-most is coming to Austin.\nIt’s showtime! Based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved film\, this hilarious musical tells the story of Lydia Deetz\, a strange and unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon with a thing for stripes. With an irreverent book\, an astonishing set\, and a score that’s out of this Netherworld\, BEETLEJUICE is “SCREAMINGLY GOOD FUN!” (Variety). And under its uproarious surface (six feet under\, to be exact)\, it’s a remarkably touching show about family\, love\, and making the most of every Day-O!\nBeetlejuice contains strong language\, mature references\, and a lot of the crazy\, inappropriate stuff you would expect from a deranged demon. Recommended for ages 13 and up.\nPresented by the Memorial Hermann Broadway at the Hobby Center

SUMMARY:Fefu and Her Friends
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Patricia Duran\nOn a spring day in 1935\, the enigmatic Fefu and seven of her female friends gather at Fefu’s New England home to rehearse a charity presentation for a local school. As the day progresses\, Fefu’s desire to control the women around her—as well as their own grudges\, heartaches\, and illnesses—build to a staggering conclusion. Fefu and Her Friends is a landmark in feminist theatre and an American avant-garde classic.

SUMMARY:THE THANKSGIVING PLAY presented by 4th Wall Theatre Company
DESCRIPTION:Estimated runtime of 1 hour and 30 minutes with no intermission.\nGood intentions collide with absurd assumptions in Larissa FastHorse’s wickedly funny satire\, as a troupe of terminally “woke” teaching artists scrambles to create a pageant that somehow manages to celebrate both Turkey Day and Native American Heritage Month.\n“Very\, very funny… this clever satire is something for which to be truly thankful.” —The Hollywood Reporter\n“The familiar\, whitewashed story of Pilgrims and Native Americans chowing down together gets a delicious roasting from expert farceurs.” —The New York Times

SUMMARY:Beyond Broadway Series: Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age
DESCRIPTION:In Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age\, he covers all the bases: sex\, death and bacchanalia\, with a set list as eclectic as the man himself. Songs from Cabaret authors Kander and Ebb blend with contemporary favourites and even a self-penned paean against plastic surgery. ‘I am literally the only person on American TV who has not had botox!’ he quips. He also discusses the effects of gravity\, the time the mum from the Brady Bunch punched him\, and what his dog taught him about the quality of life.

SUMMARY:Rewilding: Opening to Unfolding Paradigms (In Person)
DESCRIPTION:Explore how we can choose to adapt in harmony with organic processes and shifting paradigms.\nAs the world struggles to control and understand Artificial Intelligence\, this powerful technology is already affecting our lives. But as conscious beings\, we have capacities and responsibilities that AI does not. What happens if we allow the rising tension between the realms of human and computer creativity call us to a psychic evolution? With awareness\, we can choose to adapt in harmony with organic processes and shifting paradigms. In this four-week course\, we will learn ways to be in touch with three basic but powerful human capacities\, and practice them together: being aware of constant change\, feeling “in relationship” with the world\, and noticing what is not yet fully conscious. We will allow our discussion to follow our personal insights\, and the class itself to evolve as we inquire into our experience. In the process we will develop greater capacity to be aware in other relational situations.

SUMMARY:Timothy McCoy: Beyond My Lens
DESCRIPTION:These photographs are meditations on the constant and inevitable change in nature. The flow of water is one object\nof this contemplation. The flow of water and the human journey have parallels. According to Eastern philosophy\, mankind’s resistance to transformation leads to suffering.\nSelected photographs from three bodies of Timothy’s work emphasize “alternative” photographic processes: Tongues Turned to Stone (photogravure on gamphi-shi paper)\, Sanctuary (palladium on translucent vellum)\, and Long\, Long Journey to the Sea (gold-toned albumen). He chose these historical printing processes to evoke the timelessness of his content and his interpretive rather than documentary intent. In comparison\, a fourth body of work\, Watercourse Way (large digital prints on metallic paper) is a contemporary alternative to the hand-made nature of historical processes.

SUMMARY:March 1- March 30\, 2024 Exhibitions
DESCRIPTION:BOX 13 ArtSpace is pleased to present four exhibitions opening March 1\, 2024 6pm to 9pm. For the month of March\, Celia Butler’s solo exhibition “Like No Other” will be on view in Box 13 Artspace’s Front BOX Gallery. This show addresses the idealized female through food-based references for the feminine\, featuring adorned sculptures and material-based paintings. As we move to our Back BOX gallery you will find “senseAugment()” by artist Sydney Parks .The symbiotic relationship between humans and technology coalesces into one body. Enter the portal of Parks’ “senseAugment()” to see this new form emerge. Monstrous\, fleshy material exists in a space which offers an experience that is both meditative and uncanny. In our Window BOX we have a site specific installation titled “The House On The Water” by Farima Fooladi. This new body of work builds on Fooladi’s recent residency experience at the Asia Society during the Summer of 2023. It is the continuation of her experience with displacement and immigration. It roots back to Fooladi’s buried life in Iran\, confronting her current life in the US. Finally Joseph Bui and Keeley Morgan take over our Upstairs BOX. “Framing Kinship: Perspectives on Domestic Bonds” is an evocative photography exhibition that brings domestic intimacy to life through the lenses of two artists\, Joseph Bui and Keeley Morgan. Shown in Box13’s Upstairs gallery\, This collection will immerse viewers in a visual journey exploring the profound themes of kinship\, the concept of home\, and the intricate emotions that family elicits.\nThe exhibitions continue through March 30\, 2024. An Opening Reception will be held on Friday\, March 1\, 2024 6pm to 9pm at BOX 13 ArtSpace\, 6700 Harrisburg\, Houston\, TX 77011. A special thank you to Houston Arts Alliance \, the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs \, The Brown Foundation and all who have helped to support our programing.
