SUMMARY:Toc Toc\, une comédie de Laurent Baffie présentée par Et Voilà Théâtre
DESCRIPTION:September 6-7\, 27-28\, 2024\n8:00PM\n\nMECA@TBH-CENTER\n333 S. Jensen Dr.\, Houston\, TX 77003\nIn French with English surtitles.\nDuration: approximately 2h30 with intermission.\nThis play is appropriate for high school audiences and adults due to language.\nCreated at the Théâtre du Palais Royal in Paris in 2005\, the comedy TOC TOC was written by Laurent Baffie and has been seen by millions of spectators around the world.\nLaurent Baffie: “I always try to put people in situations where they would not normally meet. As a child I had an obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) myself\, and at the time\, people didn’t talk about it. As I researched the subject\, I realized that it was a serious issue and that it needed to be treated with sensitivity\, without making fun of the people affected.”\n\nIn this play\, six patients with six different obsessive-compulsive disorders meet in the waiting room of Dr Stern\, a specialist in the treatment of OCD. This internationally renowned neuro-psychiatrist only consults in France once every 2 or 3 years\, and never sees the same patient twice. But the doctor’s plane is stuck in Frankfurt. To pass the time\, Fred\, Sandie\, Blanche\, Marie\, Lili and Bob get to know each other and share their stories and their respective conditions. The final result is some real therapy\, along with a lot of bickering and humor along the way. A light\, funny play that tries to dispel all the preconceptions about OCD sufferers.

SUMMARY:Mahjong\, the I Ching\, and Life: Theories of Decision Making (In Person)
DESCRIPTION:Meet ample images with which we can think in different ways about how we make choices. Mahjong is a game from the far East played with ceramic or plastic tiles\, now popular all around the world. Like chess\, it not only requires the ability to think ahead\, but to decide on the next best move in the present moment. The I Ching (or ‘Book of Changes’) is a vast repository of countless generations of psychological insight and social and political philosophy. It is also an ancient form of divination or prediction\, and a respected method of making difficult decisions in uncertain situations. When we view our lives as a journey whose twists and turns are identical to the decisions we make\, Mahjong and the I Ching become ample images in which we can think in different ways about how we make choices. Join C.C. Lee for an introduction to these incredible heirlooms of Chinese culture\, and explore their implications for decision-making in all aspects of life.

SUMMARY:Latino cARTographies Digital Board Exhibit of Houston Artists
DESCRIPTION:We are featuring an exhibit with the University of Houston that features Latin artists through an art digital board that also features our mural. Under the leadership of Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, Director of the University of Houston’s (UH) Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies (CMALS) launched the groundbreaking digital board\, Latino cARTographies: Mapping the Past\, Present\, and Future of Houston’s Latino Visual Art. The exhibit is on display from Friday\, April 26 to December 31\, 2024.\nThis portable\, bilingual\, and interactive digital board funded by the University of Houston is the result of a three-year collaboration led by Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, with the curatorial leadership of former vice president of the National Mexican Museum of Art in Chicago\, Juana Guzman\, the CMALS Research Team\, and the International Gibson Group.\nTickets at the door are only $5 and include two other exhibits!\nClick HERE to read an article about the exhibit in Houston History Magazine.\nThe idea for Latino cARTographies began when Dr. Quiroz organized the city of Houston to host the country’s premier Latino art event\, Latino Art Now! Dr. Quiroz conceived the idea for the digital board and viewed it as a way to create a dynamic but permanent tribute to the Latino artists of Houston. She then persuaded the Gibson Group to collaborate with CMALS to achieve this goal. The result is a twenty-first-century mode to access the arts and experience culture – Latino cARTographies – that maps the past\, present\, and future of Houston’s Latino art. By utilizing technology that preserves\, represents\, and promotes Houston’s Latino visual arts and communities in an equitable and inclusive manner\, CMALS is transforming how we experience art in the twenty-first century.\nLatino cARTographies features our commissioned a mural to celebrate the many contributions of our city’s Mexican-American community. In the spirit of the great Mexican muralists\, this vibrant collective artwork\, Mexican-American History & Culture in 20th Century Houston\, highlights the places\, personalities\, concepts and events that shaped the Mexican-American community and laid the foundation for the multicultural city we live in today. Set in Connally Plaza against a dramatic backdrop of City Hall and the downtown skyline\, the mural is a cultural landmark in the historic heart of Houston. This mural spotlights 38 places\, personalities\, and events that played a key role in the growth of this community and provides recognition for the countless and essential contributions of Mexican Americans to the economy\, culture\, and vitality of our city in the 1900s. Mural artists Laura López Cano and Jesse Sifuentes\, along with key fundraisers and government officials celebrated the unveiling to Houstonians in September 2018 for National Hispanic Heritage Month. Since then\, we have several outdoor activities being celebrated around the mural for National Hispanic Heritage Month and host field trips telling the stories behind the mural. The vibrant mural\, located at 1100 Bagby Street\, is now complemented by the interactive\, digital board that is inside our museum gallery.\nAbout the Exhibitor: Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies\, University of Houston\nThe Center for Mexican American and Latino/a Studies (CMALS) at the University of Houston was established in 1972 as an interdisciplinary academic program encompassing the liberal arts\, education and social sciences focusing on the Mexican American and broader Latino experience in the U.S. Its mission is to advance knowledge\, promote critical thinking and foster the value of service to the community. This involves designing a broad spectrum of public and scholarly programs. Located within the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences\, CMALS has evolved into an academic unit with several major components: teaching\, research and publications\, recruitment and retention\, leadership training\, academic advising and community service.\nThank you to the following:\nMarisela Martinez\, Ed.D. SUMMARY:Facing Survival | David Kassan
DESCRIPTION:This compelling and transformative exhibition features the masterful paintings and drawings of acclaimed artist David Kassan\, capturing the poignant stories and portraits of Holocaust survivors.\n“Facing Survival” stands as a profound testament to the enduring power of art in narrating the untold stories of resilience and survival. Through the evocative paintings and sketches meticulously crafted by Kassan\, the exhibition unveils the profound journey of more than two dozen Holocaust survivors. By intertwining the visual representation of the survivors with the sketches revealing Kassan’s artistic process\, this exhibition transcends conventional forms of testimony\, forging a poignant visual language that surpasses the limitations of spoken or written word.\nPreceding the creation of each portrait\, Kassan deeply engaged with the survivors\, filming their testimonies and comprehending their intricate histories. His profound connection with his subjects enables him to capture not just their present visages\, but the essence of their harrowing pasts. The lifelike imagery pulsates with their spirit\, pain and dignity\, transforming these paintings into testaments of resilience and reflections of lives shaped by unspeakable violence.\nMoreover\, “Facing Survival” aspires to transcend the incomprehensible statistics—such as the unfathomable six million lives lost—to highlight the individuality of each survivor. It is a testament that defies generalization\, seeking to evoke a profound emotional connection\, to allow us to bear witness to the miraculous existence of each singular soul.
