SUMMARY:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is the artist’s first solo museum presentation in the United States. Across an installation\, a video\, and a series of commissioned sculptures\, Erlanger continues her decade-long disruption of the “semiotics of suburbia.” In her practice\, Erlanger thinks of the home as a greater ecosystem containing not only houses but also their surrounding infrastructures and interior architectures.\nAt Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH)\, massive illuminated planet sculptures map the suburban landscape\, positioning the development of home as an environmental force in itself. These new works explore “speculative memory”—how progress can only be understood through hindsight—and what this psychic limitation implies for the artist. Viewers will then move to new diorama sculptures that play on an institutional language of presentation\, positioning the enclosed scenes as already-past. Here\, Erlanger proposes both impossible architectures and terrestrial forms created using strategies of model-making. These works are each marked by changes in season\, emphasizing receding memories of a once-diverse climate.\nThe exhibition culminates in a sitcom set\, riffing on the psychology of interiors as well as acting as a platform to watch Erlanger’s new short film Appliance. The film dovetails recent research into the history and cultural significance of domestic technologies\, such as the shower or washing machine\, with a specific focus on how their operations have been considered interchangeably with human bodily functions. In our age of “polycrisis\,” wherein multiple seismic events occur simultaneously\, If Today Were Tomorrow provides a framework for thinking about the porousness of interior and exterior\, self and non-self\, body and home.\nOlivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow will be accompanied by a catalogue published by Hatje Cantz containing newly commissioned texts about the artist’s practice\, as well as contributions focusing on the interplay between architecture\, psychology\, and science fiction.\nSupport\nMajor support for Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is provided by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.\nContemporary Arts Museum of Houston is funded in part by the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.

SUMMARY:Critical Geography – FotoFest Biennial 2024
DESCRIPTION:The FotoFest Biennial 2024 central exhibition\, “Critical Geography”\, reexamines traditional Western and historical understandings of geography while expanding these investigations to new realms. Borrowing its name from the subdiscipline of geography that questions and challenges power structures\, inequality\, and the dominant ideologies shaping physical space\, Critical Geography explores how space\, place\, and communities are influenced by social\, economic\, ecological\, and political forces. By critically analyzing these dynamics\, the works in the exhibition provoke conversations around social justice\, environmental sustainability\, and transformative change.\n“Our intent is that the 2024 Biennial\, featuring both existing and newly commissioned works from local and international artists\, will allow viewers to engage in important dialogues around the social dimensions of space and our shared planet\,” says Steven Evans\, Executive Director of FotoFest. “We look forward to once again celebrating Houston’s vibrant art and photo community while embracing these new perspectives around place-making\, the image\, and geography.”\n“Critical Geography” features a diverse range of image-based practices\, representing artists from photographers and storytellers whose works shed light on systemic oppression\, violence\, and urgent environmental concerns to image-makers who appropriate mapping\, social media\, and technology in order to explore inequality in colonial and post-colonial contexts. The exhibition highlights a range of unorthodox strategies employed to construct new narratives around place and community while imagining alternative organizations of social space. The Biennial exhibition includes several site-specific works and new commissions by FotoFest.

SUMMARY:MANUAL (Ed Hill & Suzanne Bloom) | BEECH // BOOK ; An Emblematic Pairing
DESCRIPTION:MANUAL (Ed Hill / Suzanne Bloom)\nBEECH // BOOK ; An Emblematic Pairing\nMarch 9 – April 20\, 2024\nReception for the Artists: Saturday\, March 9\, 3-5 pm\,\nArtist Conversation with Juliette Bianco 4 pm\, Director\, Weatherspoon Art Museum\, Greensboro\, NC\nMoody Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new photographs by MANUAL (Ed Hill / Suzanne Bloom)\, in conjunction with the 2024 FotoFest Biennial. BEECH // BOOK\, An Emblematic Pairing draws on work from their Guggenheim Fellowship\, awarded in 2021. This exhibition marks fifty years of the artists’ collaboration and their nineteenth exhibition with the Gallery. Quoting the artists\, “The crux of the project is the shared etymological roots of the words beech and book. The implications of this dynamic connection have sparked intellectual\, imaginary\, and artistic discovery\, and extends to questions of humans’ relation with our planet. The realities of climate change prompted us to reconsider\, reexamine\, and reinterpret humans and trees as collaborative beings\, with the book\, in many ways\, acting as an informing intermediary.”\nMANUAL (Ed Hill / Suzanne Bloom) began their artistic collaboration in 1974. Considered pioneers of digital photography\, their photographs\, videos\, multimedia projects and installations have been shown widely\, both internationally and throughout the United States. Their work is represented in many permanent private and public collections including major museums in Houston\, where they are notably well established\, New York City\, San Francisco\, Los Angeles\, Chicago\, Denver\, Arizona\, and New Hampshire. A retrospective of their work\, MANUAL: Two Worlds\, The Collaboration of Ed Hill and Suzanne Bloom\, organized by the International Center of Photography and shown there in 2002\, was exhibited in an expanded form at the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston in 2004. Their first exhibition at the MFAH\, Suzanne Bloom and Ed Hill (MANUAL): Research and Collaboration\, took place in 1980. FORESTPRODUCTS\, an extensive experimental multimedia installation\, was mounted at the Contemporary Arts Museum\, Houston in 1992. Bloom and Hill are the recipients of numerous grants\, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and four National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships. MANUAL has been represented by Moody Gallery since 1983.\nMoody Gallery is open Tuesday – Friday 10:30 am – 5:00 pm and Saturday 11:00 am – 5:00 pm. SUMMARY:(of) Everything Island
DESCRIPTION:Katrina Moorhead’s (of) Everything Island is an assembly of evocative sculptural objects interacting with one another in the main gallery. Building off Moorhead’s sensitivity to materials’ potential for expansive storytelling\, these objects explore places where the veil between the real and the otherworldly is thin and porous. The works reimagine aspects of the natural world\, referencing unearthly entities and apparitions\, flora and fauna\, culled from a disparate array of sources including Victorian evolutionary theory\, video games\, and traditional Irish fairy folklore to create a feminist exploration of grief\, empathy\, and resilience.

SUMMARY:Xu Bing: Word Alchemy
DESCRIPTION:‘Xu Bing: Word Alchemy’ assembles more than 50 of Xu Bing’s most important woodcut prints\, videos\, drawings\, installations\, and other ephemera representing almost 50 years of the artist’s creative output. Starting with Xu’s early engagements with social realism and Western art historical traditions alike\, the exhibition charts the evolution of the artist’s linguistic experiments which challenge and expand not only the history of Chinese landscape painting\, but the canons of contemporary art.\nBorn in China and now working in both Brooklyn and Beijing\, artist Xu Bing (b. 1955) is widely considered to be one of the most important artists to emerge from China in the 20th century. Focusing on the artist’s longstanding engagement with words and language\, ‘Word Alchemy’ is the most comprehensive exhibition on this theme so far\, and around one-third of the objects in the exhibition are being shown in the U.S. for the first time.\nHighlights of the exhibition include Xu Bing’s early works\, his private never-before-seen notebook\, landmark prints including the Series of Repetitions handscroll\, a new Background Story with a connection to Zhao Mengfu’s famous ‘Autumn Colors on the Qiao and Hua Mountains’ handscroll\, a new Texas-themed ‘Square Word Calligraphy\,’ and a new installation of ‘Monkeys Grasp for the Moon’ in Asia Society Texas’ Fayez Sarofim Grand Hall.\nOn the occasion of the exhibition\, Asia Society Texas will publish a full-color exhibition catalogue and host a symposium on Xu Bing’s art on February 23\, 2024.

SUMMARY:'Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu Heat Silhouette'
DESCRIPTION:Asia Society Texas is pleased to present Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu Heat Silhouette\, the organization’s first public art installation. This collaboration between Cuban American artist Rafael Domenech and Vietnamese American artist Tomas Vu assumes the form of a dynamic outdoor pavilion with two stages\, occupying AST’s 13\,000-square-foot lot at the intersection of Oakdale and Caroline Streets in the heart of Houston’s Museum District. Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu Heat Silhouette is commissioned in partnership with the University of Houston’s Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts.\nDescribed by the artists as a form of “urban acupuncture\,” Heat Silhouette is a physical structure designed to welcome the spontaneous circulation of people\, energy\, and events. The outdoor pavilion takes cues from college campuses\, popular culture\, and experimental magazines. Made of wood\, aluminum framing\, and laser-cut construction mesh — the very materials used to build the city of Houston — the pavilion becomes an extension of the museum and a public programming space. The title itself references the most omnipresent weather condition of Houston the summer’s intense heat\, a heat so palpable that it feels as if it occupies actual space\, creating a silhouette or edge.\nFor the artists\, the pavilion resists merely being a form of architecture. Instead\, the pavilion physically operates as an experimental magazine\, referencing the graphic processes seen in radical publications from the 1960s and 1970s like Kontexts\, an important catalyst of avant-garde poetry. Readers do not flip Heat Silhouette’s pages; instead\, they become viewers that are invited to walk in\, around\, and through the publication. Laser-cut texts appropriated from popular science-fiction films\, poetry\, and other sources intermingle to form multiple layers and viewpoints that shift with the sunlight. Heat Silhouette is a space of active production filled with theater-like compartments — a site where text\, image\, and pattern coalesce into a kind of urban camouflage.

SUMMARY:CLEANSED by Sarah Kane
DESCRIPTION:The Catastrophic Theatre presents the Regional Premiere of\nSarah Kane’s CLEANSED\n“LOVE ME OR KILL ME”\nIn her brief boundary breaking career\, Sarah Kane’s work prompted the term “a theatre of extremes\,” yet CLEANSED comes soaked through with hope. Explosively aching\, hauntingly poetic\, and disarmingly tender\, Kane delivers a fever-dream fable of unimaginable brutality and miraculous beauty.\nIn a former university\, society’s “undesirables” are subjected to a series of experiments designed to test the limits of love on the battlefield of the human body.\nGiven our country’s immediate threat to the bodies and lives of those of us who look\, live\, or love beyond the confines of conservative ‘norms\,’ 26 years after it was written\, CLEANSED feels nightmarishly prescient. More than a play\, in 2024’s America\, CLEANSED feels like a cause.\n“Once you have perceived that life is very cruel\, the only response is to live with as much humanity\, humor and freedom as you can.”\n– Sarah Kane\nThe regional premiere of CLEANSED is co-directed by core artist T Lavois Thiebaud and founding artistic director Jason Nodler\, reuniting the creative team behind Kane’s 4.48 Psychosis which The Houston Press called “an imaginative bulldozer of a production.”\nThe production features choreography by Adam Castan͂eda and set design by Afsaneh Aayani. James Templeton serves as sound\, special effects and video designer as well as composer. Lighting design provided by Hudson Davis\, properties design by Lauren Davis and costumes by Juan Saracay. We’re thrilled to collaborate with the sculpture group\, Moon Papas Art for set construction.\nThe cast includes Raymond Compton\, Bryan Kaplún\, Ruben Ramires Da Silva\, T Lavois Thiebaud\, Chuck Vaughn\, Clarity Welch\, Abraham Zeus Zapata and Walt Zipprian with musicians Sarah Moessner and James Templeton.\nNo one under 16 years of age admitted.

SUMMARY:Reefer Madness
DESCRIPTION:There is a new menace sweeping the nation\, ready to ensnare and seduce the youth and drag them down into a life of sin: REEFER MADNESS!\nIn this hilarious\, over-the-top satire\, the high school drama club\, led by the gravely stern Lecturer\, illustrates the perils of the “leafy green assassin.” They tell the story of Jimmy\, a fine\, upstanding\, All-American boy whose life fell apart because of the evil reefer. Jimmy was a good kid\, with a bright future ahead of him. He had a sweetheart whom he loved\, the wholesome and sweet Mary Lane. But when Jimmy is tricked into taking his first puff of reefer\, his life quickly spirals downward. He begins to neglect his family\, his schoolwork\, even Mary\, in order to spend all his time smoking at the Reefer Den. His addiction leads him to debauchery\, sin\, and theft.\nReefer Madness is an irreverent parody of the classic 1930s instructional film full of camp\, hilarity\, mayhem\, and madness.

SUMMARY:Beetlejuice
DESCRIPTION:He earned his stripes on Broadway… now the ghost-with-the-most is coming to Austin.\nIt’s showtime! Based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved film\, this hilarious musical tells the story of Lydia Deetz\, a strange and unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon with a thing for stripes. With an irreverent book\, an astonishing set\, and a score that’s out of this Netherworld\, BEETLEJUICE is “SCREAMINGLY GOOD FUN!” (Variety). And under its uproarious surface (six feet under\, to be exact)\, it’s a remarkably touching show about family\, love\, and making the most of every Day-O!\nBeetlejuice contains strong language\, mature references\, and a lot of the crazy\, inappropriate stuff you would expect from a deranged demon. SUMMARY:Stagolee and the Funeral of a Dangerous Word
DESCRIPTION:World Premiere\nBy Thomas Meloncon\nThe play takes place in an office in a small town in East Texas where the local NAACP chapter is planning a funeral for the “N word”. At the same time\, a bigoted white man is on his way to that same office to have a frank discussion with the legendary Stagolee\, a black man known for his swagger. The two men have had a fight at their workplace\, and this “conversation” is actually a court-ordered intervention\, facilitated by a visiting Jewish psychologist. This new play examines different points of view along the racial divide and does so without judgement\, ultimately bringing its characters into a better understanding of each other. A world premiere production of nationally recognized Houston playwright Thomas Meloncon’s newest work.\nThomas Meloncon is an Associate Professor of Theatre in the Visual and Performing Art Dept. in the College of Liberal Arts and Behavioral Sciences at Texas Southern University. He is the author of plays that have been produced nationally and internationally. His poetry publications include Recollections and Poetry in E Minor. His list of plays includes\, Johnnie B. SUMMARY:The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare
DESCRIPTION:The Classical Theatre Company will wrap up its Season of Iconic Women with William Shakespeare’s comic masterpiece\, The Taming of the Shrew. Having not produced a Shakespeare piece since Henry V in 2015\, nor a Shakespeare comedy since The Merchant of Venice in 2013\, CTC is primed and ready to dive into The Bard once again.\nThe Taming of the Shrew follows the story of Katherine who is being sold off as a wife by her father to the highest bidder. Her boldness and stubborn streak have made her unmarriable by society\, but her sister\, Bianca\, cannot marry until the elder sister has been so. Enter Petruchio\, a cad who is determined to win over Katherine to be his wife. An explosive battle of the sexes ensues in this electrically charged love story that will have audiences crying with laughter.\n“This play is my favorite Shakespeare comedy\,” says CTC Executive Artistic Director John Johnston. “But it’s got some problematic aspects that don’t really play at face value for a modern audience. The idea of a woman being ‘tamed’ by a man to be married is creepy at best. So\, to address this issue\, our production is going to set the play as a mid-20th-century sitcom. Think Father Knows Best\, The Donna Reed Show\, or The Dick Van Dyke Show. Using the script to explore the values that we once held in our popular culture\, and do still to this day\, in some respects. Our goal is to examine and critique the treatment of women rather than glorify it\, and this lens of pre-feminist situational comedies will help us to do that.”
