SUMMARY:Vertigo of Color: Matisse\, Derain\, and the Origins of Fauvism
DESCRIPTION:In the summer of 1905\, Henri Matisse and André Derain embarked on a creative partnership that would change the course of French painting. The two painters experimented with daring directions in energetic bursts of color\, form\, and structure that eventually led to a boldly inventive artistic language known as Fauvism (from the French fauve\, or “wild beast”).\nWhile staying in the modest French fishing village of Collioure\, Matisse (1869–1954) and Derain (1880–1954) drew from local surroundings as they experienced the bustling life of the port\, the quiet beaches\, and surrounding landscapes. A new aesthetic of color and light was in process.\nVertigo of Color features many of the most celebrated works of Fauvism. The exhibition presents\, for the first time in the United States\, the legacy of that legendary summer through paintings\, drawings\, and watercolors by the two artists\, on loan from national and international museums and private collections.\nTheir evolving visual language grew from sensory experience of a moment in time\, rather than reality. As Matisse wrote\, “My choice of colors does not rest on any scientific theory; it is based on observation\, on feeling\, on the experience of my sensibility.”

SUMMARY:Kehinde Wiley: An Archaeology of Silence
DESCRIPTION:Kehinde Wiley: An Archaeology of Silence showcases Kehinde Wiley’s new\, monumental body of work\, with large-scale paintings and sculptures of men and women in repose. Through his work\, with detailed portrayals of Black and Brown individuals\, the artist confronts the silence surrounding systemic violence and injustice.\nIn this body of work\, Wiley uses the visual language of heroes\, martyrs\, and saints as portrayed in Western European historical art. His work expands on his “Down” series from 2008\, which was inspired by Hans Holbein the Younger’s 16th-century painting The Dead Christ in the Tomb. For Wiley\, Holbein’s painting triggered an ongoing investigation into the iconography of repose and sacrifice in Western art.\nWiley\, one of the world’s most celebrated contemporary artists\, created this body of work against the background of the pandemic and the global rise of the Black Lives Matter movement. The works in An Archaeology of Silence stand as elegies and monuments\, underscoring the terms in which Black people are seen and heard.\nIn his words: “That is the archaeology I am unearthing: The specter of police violence and state control over the bodies of young Black and Brown people all over the world.”\nThe exhibition premiered earlier this year at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco\, and the MFAH is the first stop on the tour.

DESCRIPTION:Multiplicity: Blackness in Contemporary American Collage is the first major museum exhibition devoted to exploring the breadth and complexity of Black identity and experiences in the United States through collage. Works by multiple generations of living artists examine concepts such as cultural hybridity\, gender fluidity\, historical memory\, and notions of beauty and power.\nBy assembling pieces of paper\, fabric\, and repurposed materials\, the artists create unified compositions that express the endless possibilities of Black-constructed narratives within a fragmented society. The artists range from established luminaries to early- and mid-career figures\, including Mark Bradford\, Lauren Halsey\, Rashid Johnson\, Kerry James Marshall\, Wangechi Mutu\, Jamea Richmond-Edwards\, Deborah Roberts\, Tschabalala Self\, Lorna Simpson\, Devan Shimoyama\, and Mickalene Thomas. Multiplicity also features notable artists who are closely identified with the city of Houston\, such as Tay Butler\, Jamal Cyrus\, Rick Lowe\, and Lovie Olivia.\nThis groundbreaking exhibition brings attention to the richness of collage as an art form. Building upon the legacy of African American artists such as Romare Bearden\, Jacob Lawrence\, Faith Ringgold\, and Betye Saar\, contemporary artists make collages in an array of ways\, from traditional cutting and pasting to creating works digitally. Arthur Jafa takes digital collage a step further\, gathering highs and lows of Black experiences into his poignant video montage Love Is the Message\, The Message Is Death.

SUMMARY:Carnival of the Animals
DESCRIPTION:The Bayou City Ballet Spring Showcase 2024\, Carnival of the Animals\, features the newly commissioned Jubilee 2024\, a re-envisioned staging of choreographer Caleb Mitchell’s celebrated work for four dancers. Set to the dizzying final movement of Saints-Saens first “Violin Sonata op 75”\, this performance includes live music performed by violinist Matt Lammers and pianist James Palmer. To contrast to the neoclassical style of Mitchell’s work\, Artistic Director Alex Pandiscio has staged the rarely performed pas de deux from August Bournonville’s “Kermesse en Bruges”\, a masterwork of the 19th century Danish choreographer. Other more modern works on the program include Dylan Allen’s popular “Bleeding Heart”\, and Dianne Maroney-Grigsby’s “Fly”. To conclude the show\, students of Bayou City Ballet School perform all together in the playful one-act ballet\, “Carnival of the Animals”\, which features dancing lions\, chickens\, tortoises\, swans\, jellyfish\, and more!

SUMMARY:Carya String Quartet: Eternal Questions
DESCRIPTION:Beethoven quartets have become a staple of the quartet repertoire since they were written almost 200 years ago. In their sixth season\, the Carya String Quartet explores some of their favorites from Beethoven’s oeuvre while exploring the influences that Beethoven has had throughout the centuries.\n“Eternal Questions” will feature Beethoven’s Op. 135\, which opens with a question set to music: “Muss es sein?” or “Must it be?”. 120 years later\, Shostakovich asked a similar question in the final movement of his Third Quartet: “Why? And for what?” These existential questions are explored musically also by Nina C. Young’s 2013 meditation on life and time\, Memento Mori.

DESCRIPTION:May 11th \, 2024 TIME 6:30p\nHouston Folklore and Music Society\nSECOND SATURDAY CONCERTS Presents\nSarah Pierce\nThe daughter of a cowboy\, raised in a family of cattlemen\, was born in Rockford\, Illinois and raised in rural West Texas. In the 6th grade she was kicked out of the children’s choir because she sang too low…her incredible alto voice already making itself be known. She would later get on her mare and sing to the cattle in the fields\, as Pierce says “They didn’t seem to mind”.\nSarah’s dream of becoming a legitimate singer began to take shape at age 12\, singing in her stepfathers band.\nAlways studying voice\, after receiving her degree in medical science she began her musical journey. One that she is still traveling today.\nSarah has toured hundreds of thousands of miles both domestic and foreign – receiving rave reviews at fairs\, festivals\, conventions\, and concert dates from New York City to Los Angeles and Northern British Columbia to San Antonio\, France\, Italy\, Germany\, and Scandinavia. Her willingness to self-promote her music has included a driving tour of 250 NPR/AC/Country radio stations across the country\, doing interviews and live on-air performances. In addition\, she has been seen in performance on MTV and was heard as the singing voice of Calamity Jane on the Emmy-nominated Time-Life television mini-series\, The Wild West. DESCRIPTION:Asia Society Texas is pleased to present Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu  Heat Silhouette\, the organization’s first public art installation. This collaboration between Cuban American artist Rafael Domenech and Vietnamese American artist Tomas Vu assumes the form of a dynamic outdoor pavilion with two stages\, occupying AST’s 13\,000-square-foot lot at the intersection of Oakdale and Caroline Streets in the heart of Houston’s Museum District. Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu  Heat Silhouette is commissioned in partnership with the University of Houston’s Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts.\nDescribed by the artists as a form of “urban acupuncture\,” Heat Silhouette is a physical structure designed to welcome the spontaneous circulation of people\, energy\, and events. The outdoor pavilion takes cues from college campuses\, popular culture\, and experimental magazines. Made of wood\, aluminum framing\, and laser-cut construction mesh — the very materials used to build the city of Houston — the pavilion becomes an extension of the museum and a public programming space. The title itself references the most omnipresent weather condition of Houston  the summer’s intense heat\, a heat so palpable that it feels as if it occupies actual space\, creating a silhouette or edge.\nFor the artists\, the pavilion resists merely being a form of architecture. Instead\, the pavilion physically operates as an experimental magazine\, referencing the graphic processes seen in radical publications from the 1960s and 1970s like Kontexts\, an important catalyst of avant-garde poetry. Readers do not flip Heat Silhouette’s pages; instead\, they become viewers that are invited to walk in\, around\, and through the publication. Laser-cut texts appropriated from popular science-fiction films\, poetry\, and other sources intermingle to form multiple layers and viewpoints that shift with the sunlight. Heat Silhouette is a space of active production filled with theater-like compartments — a site where text\, image\, and pattern coalesce into a kind of urban camouflage.

DESCRIPTION:February 1\, 2024 – July 31\, 2024\nFrom award-winning paintings to vintage bronco bull riding photos\, this HLSR exhibit complements the rodeo season in February and the Texas History Month in March.\nThis exhibit represents the cowboy spirit across Houston’s main heritages and is a big part of Houston history! Rodeo culture brings nearly all Texans together through food\, skills competitions\, music\, parades\, fundraisers\, the carnival\, vendors/exhibitors\, and family entertainment.\n“This exhibit portrays decades of the legendary organization and makes people realize the journey of how the food on their plate arrived and how important it is to support education for today’s agricultural and livestock industries.” says Alison Bell\, Executive Director of The Heritage Society.\nSome of the artifacts include-\nGeorge Bush Presidential Library Foundation saddle holder\nBlack and Hispanic Cowboy Heritage\nTaylor Swift\, Dolly Parton\, Cody Johnson\, Alabama\, plus more signed guitars showcase (#swifties)\nPhotography\, paintings\, collectibles\, costumery\, and memorabilia of all the competitions\nThe Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ promotes agriculture by hosting an annual\, family-friendly experience that educates and entertains the public\, supports Texas youth\, showcases Western heritage and provides year-round educational support within the community. Since its beginning in 1932\, the Rodeo has committed more than $575 million to Texas youth and education.\nAbout the Exhibitor: The Western Art Committee focuses on bringing important memorabilia and Western art\, including monumental bronzes\, to Show offices and facilities. Additionally\, the committee archives Show history\, along with Western art\, for display during the annual event. Their first exhibit with The Heritage Society ran from February 18\, 2023 to January 31\, 2024.\nMuseum Gallery Hours: Tuesday – Saturday; 10 a.m.– 4 p.m.\nAdmission: $5 for ages 6 and up. SUMMARY:Tracye Wear | From the Garden
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of recent sculpture by Tracye Wear. Wear is inspired by her combined interests in Cubist and early 20th Century sculpture with natural forms found in her garden.\n“With her latest series\, Tracye Wear pushes the scale limitations of the ceramic arts while reveling in the life-affirming forms of nature. Not thrown on a potter’s wheel\, these contours are molded\, shaped\, and coil-built\, but become organic beings. Decidedly of the hand\, these vessels’ surfaces are smoothed and rounded yet often animated by the controlled indentations of human fingers.\nTransferring her real-life skills with plants\, soil\, water\, and sunlight from her home’s backyard\, she enters a related studio terrain of pliable clay\, moisture\, the alchemy of glazes\, and finally intense heat. By reenacting the mysteries of how vegetation sprouts and thrives as transformed by photosynthesis\, Wear introduces a verdant vocabulary of seeds\, tendrils\, leaves\, and blossoms to spiraling\, bulbous\, and seemingly pregnant vessels.\nThe artist resists the allure of boldly colored and glossy glazes\, for the most part\, instead seeking the subtleties inherent in transition and gradation. Her experimentation with the layer upon layer of colored glazes—when applied to protruding ribs and sinking recesses—embraces the chemical interactions and revelations that result from the extreme temperatures of high-firing. The transformative heat of the kiln itself provides a final chance interpretation of Wear’s otherwise intentioned deployment of palette and light.\nAlong the way\, viewers may recognize allusions to the Venus of Willendorf\, Hieronymous Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights\, Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s Tower of Babel\, or the shadow and light of Dutch floral still lifes. At this exhibition\, Wear invites us to wander—and to linger and wonder—in her secret garden\, surreal but familiar\, teeming with the affirmations of growth and transformation.” —Don Quaintance\, Public Address Design
