SUMMARY:“FOLDED TIME”\, featuring new works by Colleen Maynard and Sarah Sudhoff\,
DESCRIPTION:Throughline will open its fifth two-person collective member exhibition\, “FOLDED TIME”\, featuring new works by Colleen Maynard and Sarah Sudhoff\, on Friday\, October 4 at 3909 Main Street\, Houston\, TX 77002. An opening reception will occur from 6 to 9pm the same evening.\nIn Folded Time\, Colleen Maynard and Sarah Sudhoff examine the compounding and unspooling of deep time and process via performance\, drawing\, photography and collage. SUMMARY:River on Fire - an exhibition
DESCRIPTION:River on Fire is a multidisciplinary exhibition showcasing the work of 14 artists who respond to environmental crises and climate change. Curated by Ashley DeHoyos Sauder\, the exhibition draws inspiration from a long history of environmental activism related to river fires across the nation— events that have significantly shaped understandings of ecological preservation and environmental advocacy.\nThe featured artists: Carolina Aranibar-Fernández (San Francisco\, CA)\, Brandon Ballengée (New Orleans\, LA)\, Alana Bartol (Calgary\, Alberta\, Canada)\, Christina Battle (Edmonton\, Alberta\, Canada)\, Hannah Chalew (New Orleans\, LA)\, Lili Chin (New York\, NY)\, Willow Naomi Curry (Houston\, TX)\, Morel Doucet (Miami\, FL)\, Heather L. Johnson (Houston\, TX)\, Ayanna Jolivet Mccloud (Houston\, TX)\, Laura Napier (Ann Arbor\, MI)\, Joe Robles IV (Pasadena\, TX)\, Manuel Alejandro Rodríguez-Delgado (Roswell\, NM/Puerto Rico)\, and Zuyva Sevilla (Albuquerque\, NM) bring attention to pressing ecological issues. Through artistic research and lived experience\, they highlight the unique environmental challenges facing local\, regional\, and national landscapes.\nThrough creative action and building a historical understanding of these types of cataclysmic events\, River on Fire seeks to provide a platform for conversation and awareness of ongoing environmental issues. The relationship between living in a city dominated by industry and co-existing with environmental disaster in the wake of climate change has brought the city’s resilience into question and increased concerns over the continuation of industry practices that place people and the natural world at risk. As Houston continues to grow\, the effects of climate change have become increasingly severe— record heat waves\, flooding\, more frequent and intense hurricanes\, and massive power outages are clear signs that we already have to confront new and different ways of being. River on Fire asks: how do artists and creative practices shift the narrative and introduce possible solutions in a city with such a complex ecosystem?\nRiver on Fire includes internal evaluations of DW exhibition practices and implementation of sustainable exhibition design developed through a year-long Climate Coaching Pilot with the Teiger Foundation and Rute Collaborative\, a Canadian-based environmental consultant. The impetus for the project comes in part from Houston’s entwined history with the oil\, gas\, and chemical industries and the curator’s youth spent living in Houston-area neighborhoods close to these industries.\nRiver on Fire is presented in conversation with the eighth iteration of the Texas Biennial The Last Sky\, co-curated by Ashley DeHoyos Sauder\, Erika Mei Chua Holum\, and Coka Treviño. Biennial artists featured in River on Fire include Brandon Ballengée\, Heather L. Johnson\, Ayanna Jolivet Mccloud\, Laura Napier & Zuyva Sevilla.\nSave the date for the Art and + Climate Justice Symposium happening November 8 – 10\, 2024. The climax of the story\,\na long tense scene of bomb disposal\, is a virtuoso\nsuspense sequence that is one of the most memorable\nin the filmography of Powell and Pressburger. SUMMARY:Il trovatore
DESCRIPTION:Just under the surface\, every family has its unresolved problems and mysteries. Verdi’s Il trovatore embraces this complexity ––a Romani curse\, disappeared children\, mislaid identities\, deadly fires\, unfathomable loss. But something elemental emerges from the shadows and the embers\, rekindled by Verdi’s thrumming\, thrilling score––an extended family coming to terms with its secret history. In a politically divided Spain\, the royalist Count di Luna and the revolutionary leader Manrico love the same woman\, Leonora. As the men face off\, they become ensnared in a larger web of lies\, murder\, and revenge\, spun in part by the fascinating Romani woman Manrico knows as his mother: Azucena\, whose own mother’s death set the story in motion many years earlier. Azucena holds all the cards and plays them\, with eerie certainty\, right up to the last moment.

SUMMARY:Live at the Founders Club: Celebrating Max Roach and Abbey Lincoln with Camille Thurman and Darrell Green
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating Max Roach and Abbey Lincoln delivers an evening of beautiful\, soulful sounds which spotlight both the centennial year of Max Roach\, and the music that he and his wife\, vocalist and actress Abbey Lincoln made together.\nMax Roach was one of the pioneers of Bebop and a founder of modern jazz drumming\, while Abbey Lincoln had a sparkling career in Hollywood and as a popular singer. Through her association with Max Roach\, she began to expand her musical world to include songs in support of civil rights and worldwide freedom\, delivering powerful anthems that are still part of that soundtrack.\nCamille Thurman has cemented herself as not only one of today’s most important saxophonists\, but also one of our most skilled vocalists. She sings with clarity and sweetness\, while also possessing an uncanny ability to scat sing in her own very original style. Drummer Darryl Green has been called for years to perform with today’s most iconic musicians\, providing groove and good feeling with every bandstand he is a part of. After joining forces both personally and professionally\, they have delivered musical magic together across the world for a number of years\, and promise an elegant\, amazing evening of Jazz at the Founder’s Club.

SUMMARY:Dracula by Bram Stoker
DESCRIPTION:“As we mark the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the first authorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s seminal vampire novel\, we seek to peel back a century’s worth of imagery and mythology that has built up\, layer upon layer\, around this iconic character. So much of what we think of when we hear the name ‘Dracula’ comes not from Stoker’s novel but from subsequent plays\, films\, and television productions\,” says script adaptor Chris Iannacone. “Our goal is to approach this story without the baggage of those interpretations\, as if it was a newly-discovered text\, and in doing so\, bring a freshness and vibrancy to this classic tale of horror.”\nThe story follows a lawyer\, Jonathan Harker\, as he travels to the Carpathian Mountains to visit Count Dracula in his castle to help him purchase a home near London. While there\, Harker observes strange and terrible goings on in the castle. The Count then abandons his home and Harker to travel to England. Upon his arrival\, Dracula begins to stalk the land as a bloodsucking vampire\, picking off some close to Harker. Included among them is his fiancée\, Mina Murray. Jonathan Harker\, after much trial and tribulation\, returns to England\, where he and his comrades begin the hunt for the Count. Their travails take them from London back to Romania and the climactic battle in the shadow of Castle Dracula. Audiences will be on the edge of their seats for this Gothic tale.\n“We’re very excited to be working with Chris again. He’s collaborated with us on three scripts now\, and we’ve been very pleased with the results each time. He knows how important the original text is to us and our mission\, and that’s key to the type of play we produce\,” says CTC Executive Artistic Director John Johnston. “I’m so thrilled to bring horror to the CTC stage. And such an iconic character in Count Dracula too. The traditional source material take we are going to have with him will make him feel fresh to our audiences.”\nDirected by Blake Weir\, who most recently assistant directed The School for Scandal and The War of the Worlds for Classical Theatre Company. He last appeared on the CTC stage when he portrayed Marius/Radius/Primus in R.U.R.

DESCRIPTION:When a prominent white businessman is charged with the sexual assault of a black woman\, he employs a multicultural law firm to defend him. As the legal team examines the case\, the evidence raises questions about the accused’s firsthand account. How far will they go in defense of their client and the pursuit of actual justice?
