SUMMARY:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is the artist’s first solo museum presentation in the United States. Across an installation\, a video\, and a series of commissioned sculptures\, Erlanger continues her decade-long disruption of the “semiotics of suburbia.” In her practice\, Erlanger thinks of the home as a greater ecosystem containing not only houses but also their surrounding infrastructures and interior architectures.\nAt Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH)\, massive illuminated planet sculptures map the suburban landscape\, positioning the development of home as an environmental force in itself. These new works explore “speculative memory”—how progress can only be understood through hindsight—and what this psychic limitation implies for the artist. Viewers will then move to new diorama sculptures that play on an institutional language of presentation\, positioning the enclosed scenes as already-past. Here\, Erlanger proposes both impossible architectures and terrestrial forms created using strategies of model-making. These works are each marked by changes in season\, emphasizing receding memories of a once-diverse climate.\nThe exhibition culminates in a sitcom set\, riffing on the psychology of interiors as well as acting as a platform to watch Erlanger’s new short film Appliance. The film dovetails recent research into the history and cultural significance of domestic technologies\, such as the shower or washing machine\, with a specific focus on how their operations have been considered interchangeably with human bodily functions. In our age of “polycrisis\,” wherein multiple seismic events occur simultaneously\, If Today Were Tomorrow provides a framework for thinking about the porousness of interior and exterior\, self and non-self\, body and home.\nOlivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow will be accompanied by a catalogue published by Hatje Cantz containing newly commissioned texts about the artist’s practice\, as well as contributions focusing on the interplay between architecture\, psychology\, and science fiction.\nSupport\nMajor support for Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is provided by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.\nContemporary Arts Museum of Houston is funded in part by the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.

SUMMARY:Gabriel Lester: Odeon
DESCRIPTION:The Blaffer Art Museum is proud to present the first solo museum exhibition in the United States of preeminent European artist Gabriel Lester\, who has gained an international standing for his art\, performance\, and film as well as his dynamic public art installations. Across his now decades-long career\, Lester has developed a captivating cinematic lens through which to see and imagine the world – consistently locating wonder in the seemingly stolid and mundane. For this exhibition Lester is most interested in the interplay between light and shadow\, as well as the seen and unseen\, as he responds to Houston and the fossil fuel industry that so deeply sheathes the region.\nIn the title installation StarStruck\, a dark\, viscous pool of oil is continually interrupted by droplets of water and corresponding flares of brilliant light – piercing a thick chamber of shadow with illuminating transmission. This waking effect is further articulated in the neighboring video sculpture Cosmic Call\, where the artist chases amorphous scenes of the universe through effervescent\, yet ultra low-resolution LED monitors to create a mesmerizing\, if highly elusive display. The capacity for light to simultaneously lead and lose us is expanded in the charmingly immersive installation How to Act as flickering colors surround us – pulsing to the soundtracks of various genres of film and television. The result is familiar and uncanny at once\, evoking the abstract languages of televisual entertainment while also making them strange and disorienting. Early modes of cinema flash before our eyes in the adjacent series Jump Cut\, where methodically rotating cubes house a variety of laser cut tableaux – coming into focus just long enough to dance away\, over and over again. Persistence of vision and retinal residue accumulates here\, propelling the art to work as much before your eyes\, as within and behind them. The final installation marries optical with environmental effect as rays of sun shine through the increasingly perforated ebony towers of Bambaataa\, projecting floating holo-graphic cubes that speak to the fleetingness of so-called structure. Taken and received as a whole\, this exhibition pierces heavy\, weighted geometries and their absolutes with the delightful\, if perplexing magic of discovery.

DESCRIPTION:The phrase “counter-cartographies” describes Manila-based artist Cian Dayrit interdisciplinary practice of transforming historic maps into portraits of contemporary social conditions. Employing counter- cartography as an approach\, Dayrit charts histories of imperialism\, industrialization\, and systems of subjugation that shape geographical boundaries and cultural narratives around the world. In Summer 2024\, Blaffer will present Dayrit’s first solo museum exhibition in the United States with embroidered tapestries\, paintings\, and sculpture. The exhibition will be accompanied by Countermapping Workshops in Houston to excavate histories of imperialism\, extraction\, and displacement among historically marginalized people\, while summoning new imaginaries that recognize the overlapping global struggles and resistance.

SUMMARY:“From Plantation to Emancipation – The Freedom Experience” is a “Houston Signature Experience” by Visit Houston
DESCRIPTION:During your tour of three historic houses that tell Houston’s stories from plantation to emancipation\, the talented actor brings the hardships of slavery and the victory of freedom to life in dramatic reenactments. The historical script was written by Martha Whiting-Goddard\, Reverend Jack Yates’ great granddaughter\, who lived in the Yates House that was relocated to Sam Houston Park.\nExplore the following three houses that are designated by UNESCO as Sites of Memory for their “Routes of Enslaved Peoples’ Project” – 1847 Kellum-Noble House; 1866 Fourth Ward Cottage; and 1870 Yates House. “Sites of Memory\,” or “Sites of Conscience” are historic places that activate the power of memory to engage the public in a deeper understanding of the past\, inspiring action to shape a more just future. These sites break the silence surrounding slavery\, and place the tragedy into our universal memory. It is only through dialogue that we can have peace and reconciliation. We have a duty to remember the crimes committed against humanity by our ancestors\, especially as we see the return of prejudice and discrimination today.\nThe talented reenactor\, Khi Stephens\, brings the hardships of slavery and the victory of freedom to life through song\, a Library of Congress slave narrative\, and a portrayal written by a descendant of the Reverend Jack Yates. Stephens studied theater in Los Angeles and was coached by Martha Whiting-Goddard on her roles.\nFrom Plantation to Emancipation – The Freedom Experience begins on Saturday\, February 10 in celebration of Black History Month. These 90-minute tours are offered on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month; from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.\nGroups of 10 or more are encouraged to make a reservation at least two (2) weeks in advance. DESCRIPTION:From June 15 to August 18\, 2024 Please join TXRX Labs in the Techne Gallery for a talented membership showcase of our woodworking community.\nObjects will include furniture\, Maloof inspired chairs\, hand turned bowls\, cutting boards and decorative inlay applications through VCarve\, CNC work\, live edge work\, wood turning and various hand finishing techniques.\nCome opening weekend to engage directly with the craftsmen behind the creations to learn more about woodworking processes and their lifestyle insights\, inspirations and techniques. Stay to explore further collaborative opportunities with the artisans and fellow members.\nSelect pieces will be available for purchase\, providing an opportunity to bring home a piece of our vibrant community’s artistic expression.\nEvent Opening : Saturday June 15th 10am-3pm\nArtist Talks will be scheduled on our open house days\, given the 1st Friday of each month. Dive deeper into the world of woodworking by learning about our state-of-the-art tools and equipment\, enrolling in offered classes\, and tapping into the expertise of our dedicated shop manager and skilled volunteers with 30+ years of experience. Please look for the brightly colored permanently installed EEMH fabricated sign next to the very long driveway. We are past Centerpoints last driveway and our facility cannot be seen from the road. When you do find us\, the facility has a brightly colored mural of orange\, blue and gray squares on it. TXRX Lab’s front door is to the left of the loading docks.\nGallery hours : Mon-Fri 12-8 pm. Sat/Sun 10-3pm.

SUMMARY:Explore Your Mind at The Health Museum with the U.S. Premiere of MindWorks
DESCRIPTION:Ever wonder what is going on in your head? Now\, you can find out! Opening on June 15\, 2024\, The Health Museum will debut the U.S. premiere of MindWorks\, a hands-on\, bodies-on psychology exhibition on loan from the Ontario Science Centre.\nMindWorks brings ideas like decision-making\, memory\, and emotions to life through playful\, interactive exhibits based on cognitive psychology. MindWorks will encourage visitors to step into their own mind and explore how they think\, feel\, and react in a playful and exciting new way.\nResearched\, designed\, and fabricated by the Ontario Science Centre\, MindWorks lets visitors explore and learn through a fully immersive experience – from writing a song with building blocks to understanding personality traits. Visitors can try their negotiation skills to play the world’s largest Pac-Man game and engage in critical thinking as they squeeze through unusual shapes and explore consciousness with help from a humanoid robot.
