SUMMARY:The Sound of Music
DESCRIPTION:Join HGO for a special themed experience that will celebrate our veterans and active-duty service members\, Military Appreciation Day. Enjoy pre-show activities including a national anthem performance\, color guard ceremony\, and more.\nA family-friendly classic. A tale of resistance\, courage\, and joy. The Sound of Music\, whose story begins in the hills of Austria on the eve of the Nazis’ annexation\, resonates as much today as during the musical’s 1959 premiere. Acclaimed director Francesca Zambello incorporates songs from both the theatrical version and its famous cinematic adaptation into her new production\, a vibrant staging of the beloved story of the von Trapp children\, their stern father\, and the novice-turned-governess Maria who changes their lives. The Wortham Theater is the perfect place to experience Rodgers and Hammerstein’s original vision for their timeless musical\, propelled by the full power of the world-class HGO Orchestra and Chorus and a peerless cast including world-famous mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard as Maria and baritone Alexander Birch Elliott as the Captain. HGO’s Richard Bado takes the podium to conduct this classic family-friendly production.

SUMMARY:Beyond Broadway Series: Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age
DESCRIPTION:In Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age\, he covers all the bases: sex\, death and bacchanalia\, with a set list as eclectic as the man himself. Songs from Cabaret authors Kander and Ebb blend with contemporary favourites and even a self-penned paean against plastic surgery. ‘I am literally the only person on American TV who has not had botox!’ he quips. He also discusses the effects of gravity\, the time the mum from the Brady Bunch punched him\, and what his dog taught him about the quality of life.

SUMMARY:Beetlejuice
DESCRIPTION:He earned his stripes on Broadway… now the ghost-with-the-most is coming to Austin.\nIt’s showtime! Based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved film\, this hilarious musical tells the story of Lydia Deetz\, a strange and unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon with a thing for stripes. With an irreverent book\, an astonishing set\, and a score that’s out of this Netherworld\, BEETLEJUICE is “SCREAMINGLY GOOD FUN!” (Variety). And under its uproarious surface (six feet under\, to be exact)\, it’s a remarkably touching show about family\, love\, and making the most of every Day-O!\nBeetlejuice contains strong language\, mature references\, and a lot of the crazy\, inappropriate stuff you would expect from a deranged demon. Recommended for ages 13 and up.\nPresented by the Memorial Hermann Broadway at the Hobby Center

SUMMARY:'Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu Heat Silhouette'
DESCRIPTION:Asia Society Texas is pleased to present Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu Heat Silhouette\, the organization’s first public art installation. This collaboration between Cuban American artist Rafael Domenech and Vietnamese American artist Tomas Vu assumes the form of a dynamic outdoor pavilion with two stages\, occupying AST’s 13\,000-square-foot lot at the intersection of Oakdale and Caroline Streets in the heart of Houston’s Museum District. Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu Heat Silhouette is commissioned in partnership with the University of Houston’s Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts.\nDescribed by the artists as a form of “urban acupuncture\,” Heat Silhouette is a physical structure designed to welcome the spontaneous circulation of people\, energy\, and events. The outdoor pavilion takes cues from college campuses\, popular culture\, and experimental magazines. Made of wood\, aluminum framing\, and laser-cut construction mesh — the very materials used to build the city of Houston — the pavilion becomes an extension of the museum and a public programming space. SUMMARY:Innovations in Italian Art
DESCRIPTION:The Italian Cultural & Community Center is proud to present an all new art history lecture series exploring three of Italy’s most pioneering artists: Giotto\, Caravaggio\, and De Chirico. We are delighted to welcome back instructor Francesca Lanza for Innovations in Italian Art\, this May at the Italian Cultural & Community Center. Three classes\, three incredible artists.\nThe first class will examine Giotto\, one of the first artists to give a new direction to art in Late Medieval Italy. Breaking with the stylized traditions of Byzantine art\, Giotto drew from real life with a more natural style and three-dimensional quality. We will explore some of his most famous works: the Scrovegni Chapel\, the Assisi frescoes\, and a number of panel paintings.\nThe second class will focus on Caravaggio\, one of the most controversial artists in the Italian art world. With his dramatic compositions and liberal employment of the chiaroscuro technique\, Caravaggio influenced generations of artists throughout the continent\, including Peter Paul Rubens\, Rembrandt\, and Bernini.\nThe third and final class will explore the work of Giorgio De Chirico\, one of the biggest names in twentieth-century Italian art. Influenced by the Surrealist movement\, De Chirico founded the Metaphysical Art movement in 1910. He is best known for his enigmatic paintings like The Disquieting Muses. Salvador Dalì and René Magritte were among the many artists to take inspiration from De Chirico.\nFrom the Middle Ages to the twentieth century\, we look forward to exploring the wonderful world of Italian art with you.\nSchedule\nMonday\, May 6\, 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.\nMonday\, May 13\, 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.\nMonday\, May 20\, 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.\nTickets\n$75 ICCC Members | $100 General Admission\nMeet Your Instructor\nFrancesca Lanza was born in Savona\, Italy. She has a master’s degree in History of Arts and Management of Cultural Heritage. In Italy\, she worked as a museum educator and enjoyed teaching art. In 2015\, she moved to Boston\, Massachusetts to follow her husband. There\, she worked at the local museum of fine arts. At the end of 2016\, she moved to Houston\, where she started to teach private and group classes at the ICCC for students of all ages. She loves teaching Italian language and culture and shares her passion for Italian culture and art with students of all ages. Her most recent courses at the Italian Cultural & Community Center include The Meaning behind the Masterpieces and The Wonders of Italian Art: Veneto and Southern Italy.\nCancellation Policy\nTuition is non-refundable\, but we offer tuition credit toward a future group class if you cancel 48 hours in advance of the start of the first class. Tuition credit is valid for six months from the start date of the course. If you cancel less than 48 hours in advance\, your tuition payment will be converted into a tax-deductible donation to the Italian Cultural & Community Center. You may cancel by phone at (713) 524-4222\, ext. 2.\nThis event is funded in part by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance.

The title itself references the most omnipresent weather condition of Houston the summer’s intense heat\, a heat so palpable that it feels as if it occupies actual space\, creating a silhouette or edge.\nFor the artists\, the pavilion resists merely being a form of architecture. Instead\, the pavilion physically operates as an experimental magazine\, referencing the graphic processes seen in radical publications from the 1960s and 1970s like Kontexts\, an important catalyst of avant-garde poetry. Readers do not flip Heat Silhouette’s pages; instead\, they become viewers that are invited to walk in\, around\, and through the publication. Laser-cut texts appropriated from popular science-fiction films\, poetry\, and other sources intermingle to form multiple layers and viewpoints that shift with the sunlight. Heat Silhouette is a space of active production filled with theater-like compartments — a site where text\, image\, and pattern coalesce into a kind of urban camouflage.
