SUMMARY:Scenes From Films I'll Never Make
DESCRIPTION:Marking a major shift in Maloney’s practice\, Scenes From Films I’ll Never Make\, introduces a selection of 10 new oil paintings made by the artist within the last year. As the title suggests\, a lot of the pieces were first conceived as ideas for films that for one reason or another never came to be. Rather than letting these stories fall into the ether\, Maloney breathes new life into them with his brush\, imbuing his images with elements of surrealism or abstraction to help portray the psychological state of his characters. This work stems from Maloney’s own battles with mental illness\, isolation\, and anxiety. However he balances everything with revelry in the comical absurdity of modern life. Maloney’s ultimate concern is with the power of stories and how we as an audience connect to them.\nThe exhibition is on view at Sabine Street’s East Corridor Gallery through November 2.

SUMMARY:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is the artist’s first solo museum presentation in the United States. Across an installation\, a video\, and a series of commissioned sculptures\, Erlanger continues her decade-long disruption of the “semiotics of suburbia.” In her practice\, Erlanger thinks of the home as a greater ecosystem containing not only houses but also their surrounding infrastructures and interior architectures.\nAt Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH)\, massive illuminated planet sculptures map the suburban landscape\, positioning the development of home as an environmental force in itself. These new works explore “speculative memory”—how progress can only be understood through hindsight—and what this psychic limitation implies for the artist. Viewers will then move to new diorama sculptures that play on an institutional language of presentation\, positioning the enclosed scenes as already-past. Here\, Erlanger proposes both impossible architectures and terrestrial forms created using strategies of model-making. These works are each marked by changes in season\, emphasizing receding memories of a once-diverse climate.\nThe exhibition culminates in a sitcom set\, riffing on the psychology of interiors as well as acting as a platform to watch Erlanger’s new short film Appliance. The film dovetails recent research into the history and cultural significance of domestic technologies\, such as the shower or washing machine\, with a specific focus on how their operations have been considered interchangeably with human bodily functions. In our age of “polycrisis\,” wherein multiple seismic events occur simultaneously\, If Today Were Tomorrow provides a framework for thinking about the porousness of interior and exterior\, self and non-self\, body and home.\nOlivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow will be accompanied by a catalogue published by Hatje Cantz containing newly commissioned texts about the artist’s practice\, as well as contributions focusing on the interplay between architecture\, psychology\, and science fiction.\nSupport\nMajor support for Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is provided by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.\nContemporary Arts Museum of Houston is funded in part by the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.

SUMMARY:“Out of Thin Air: Emerging Forms”
DESCRIPTION:“Out of Thin Air: Emerging Forms” examines drawing as a meditative process that invites the gradual appearance of indeterminate images.

SUMMARY:Afi Ese and Jaymes Earl: Interconnected Opulence: The African influence on Black urban adornment
DESCRIPTION:The concept of opulence revolves around the symbols of wealth and status that hold significance within a particular community. This show highlights the urban trend of having gold teeth. Coined as grillz by Houston hip-hop culture\, gold teeth have historically held significance in the black community as a symbol of wealth\, success\, and individuality. In many African and African American cultures\, gold teeth are seen as a form of adornment and self-expression\, reflecting a person’s personal style and cultural identity. Additionally\, gold teeth have been used as a way for individuals to display their financial status and social standing\, especially in communities where traditional forms of wealth may not be as easily accessible. Overall\, gold teeth hold a special place in the black community as a symbol of cultural pride\, creativity\, and defiance\, reminding individuals of their heritage and the struggles they have overcome.

SUMMARY:Shakespeare in Italy
DESCRIPTION:As far as we know\, William Shakespeare never traveled to Italy. But the culture of Italy fascinated him. The dramatic action for one-third of all his plays takes place within an Italian setting\, either ancient or contemporary.\nFrom the lovelorn and feud-vexed streets of Romeo and Juliet’s Verona and the ancient Roman forum in which Julius Caesar was assassinated\, to the frothy mix of sex\, money\, and intrigue of Shylock and Othello’s Venice\, Shakespeare’s fascination with Italy inspired his work as a playwright. His Italian settings are so crucial to his plots that the locations themselves seem to have become characters in their own right. We ourselves will take inspiration from Shakespeare’s fascination with Italy\, at that time the acknowledged cultural center of the western world. By studying his plays\, we can expand our own horizons and our own perspectives\, while learning about the context within which their action occurs. Italy beats at the heart of Shakespeare’s poetic and dramatic imagination.\nIn this course\, we will read and discuss several of these Italian plays\, watch clips from film adaptations of these plays to see modern variations on the action\, and conclude with a close reading of Shakespeare’s finest play of all\, The Tempest—which is set on an unknown island in the Mediterranean where some Machiavellian Italians from Milan and Naples are stranded along with Prospero\, who is the most accomplished of all the characters who people the world (or Globe!) created by Shakespeare’s plays.\nSchedule\nMonday\, September 23\, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.\nMonday\, September 30\, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.\nMonday\, October 7\, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.\nMonday\, October 14\, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.\nTickets\n$125 ICCC Members | $150 General Admission\nMeet Your Instructor\nDr. Dustin Gish is a Professor of Humanities and Political Philosophy in the Honors College at the University of Houston\, where he has taught courses in political theory\, philosophy\, and literature since 2014. He received his interdisciplinary Ph.D. from the Institute of Philosophic Studies at the University of Dallas\, and his M.A. in Liberal Education from St. John’s College (SF).\nFor a decade\, Dr. Gish lived in Rome\, Italy\, and taught courses there at two American universities focused on ancient Roman civilization as well as on the art\, history\, and philosophy of the Italian Renaissance. He has published extensively on the plays of Shakespeare\, Thomas Jefferson and the American Founding\, Xenophon’s Socrates\, and the visual rhetoric of Italian civic republicanism.
