SUMMARY:Spirituality\, Sexuality and Mortality
DESCRIPTION:Explore how spirituality\, sexuality\, and our own mortality influence the many complex relationships between our conscious and unconscious minds. What if the solution for transforming our chaotic world lays deep in our bodies and imaginations? Spirituality\, sexuality\, and mortality are three charged themes at the core of both our individual and collective psyches. Religious traditions from east to west\, myths\, stories and rituals from all cultures\, treat these themes as “pearls” strung together in timeless and universal patterns of life embedded in the natural world all around us. Confronting these themes is key to removing the “filters” that block access to a greater consciousness\, thereby allowing us to live and experience life to the fullest. Join us as we explore how these “pearls” influence the many complex relationships between our conscious and unconscious minds through an examination of art – especially the cave paintings of Lascaux – lecture\, and discussion.

SUMMARY:Chapman Dance presents ENTANGLEMENTS
DESCRIPTION:Entanglements was first inspired by the concept of quantum entanglement. When two particles\, such as a pair of photons or electrons\, become entangled\, they remain connected even when separated by vast distances. Entanglement can also be defined as a messy or codependent relationship. Just as quantum entanglement defies classical notions of separation and locality\, human emotional entanglement challenges our understanding of individual boundaries and independence. These shared experiences\, emotions\, and interactions weave a complex web that binds people together in ways that are profound and sometimes difficult to fully explain\, mirroring the mysterious and interconnected nature of entangled particles. Join us for an evening of Entanglements\, as dance imitates science and science imitates life.

SUMMARY:Scenes From Films I'll Never Make
DESCRIPTION:Marking a major shift in Maloney’s practice\, Scenes From Films I’ll Never Make\, introduces a selection of 10 new oil paintings made by the artist within the last year. As the title suggests\, a lot of the pieces were first conceived as ideas for films that for one reason or another never came to be. Rather than letting these stories fall into the ether\, Maloney breathes new life into them with his brush\, imbuing his images with elements of surrealism or abstraction to help portray the psychological state of his characters. This work stems from Maloney’s own battles with mental illness\, isolation\, and anxiety. However he balances everything with revelry in the comical absurdity of modern life. Maloney’s ultimate concern is with the power of stories and how we as an audience connect to them.\nThe exhibition is on view at Sabine Street’s East Corridor Gallery through November 2.

SUMMARY:Afi Ese and Jaymes Earl: Interconnected Opulence: The African influence on Black urban adornment
DESCRIPTION:The concept of opulence revolves around the symbols of wealth and status that hold significance within a particular community. This show highlights the urban trend of having gold teeth. Coined as grillz by Houston hip-hop culture\, gold teeth have historically held significance in the black community as a symbol of wealth\, success\, and individuality. In many African and African American cultures\, gold teeth are seen as a form of adornment and self-expression\, reflecting a person’s personal style and cultural identity. Additionally\, gold teeth have been used as a way for individuals to display their financial status and social standing\, especially in communities where traditional forms of wealth may not be as easily accessible. Overall\, gold teeth hold a special place in the black community as a symbol of cultural pride\, creativity\, and defiance\, reminding individuals of their heritage and the struggles they have overcome.

SUMMARY:By the Way\, Meet Vera Stark
DESCRIPTION:BY THE WAY\, MEET VERA STARK\nby Lynn Nottage\nGuest Director: ShaWanna Renee Rivon\nOverview: This witty comedy draws upon the screwball films of the 1930s to take a funny and irreverent look at racial stereotypes in Hollywood. This 70-year journey carries us through the life of Vera Stark\, a headstrong African-American maid and budding actress\, and her tangled relationship with her boss\, a white Hollywood star. When circumstances collide and both women land roles in the same Southern epic\, the story behind the cameras leaves Vera with a surprising and controversial legacy.
