SUMMARY:Xu Bing: Word Alchemy
DESCRIPTION:‘Xu Bing: Word Alchemy’ assembles more than 50 of Xu Bing’s most important woodcut prints\, videos\, drawings\, installations\, and other ephemera representing almost 50 years of the artist’s creative output. Starting with Xu’s early engagements with social realism and Western art historical traditions alike\, the exhibition charts the evolution of the artist’s linguistic experiments which challenge and expand not only the history of Chinese landscape painting\, but the canons of contemporary art.\nBorn in China and now working in both Brooklyn and Beijing\, artist Xu Bing (b. 1955) is widely considered to be one of the most important artists to emerge from China in the 20th century. Focusing on the artist’s longstanding engagement with words and language\, ‘Word Alchemy’ is the most comprehensive exhibition on this theme so far\, and around one-third of the objects in the exhibition are being shown in the U.S. for the first time.\nHighlights of the exhibition include Xu Bing’s early works\, his private never-before-seen notebook\, landmark prints including the Series of Repetitions handscroll\, a new Background Story with a connection to Zhao Mengfu’s famous ‘Autumn Colors on the Qiao and Hua Mountains’ handscroll\, a new Texas-themed ‘Square Word Calligraphy\,’ and a new installation of ‘Monkeys Grasp for the Moon’ in Asia Society Texas’ Fayez Sarofim Grand Hall.\nOn the occasion of the exhibition\, Asia Society Texas will publish a full-color exhibition catalogue and host a symposium on Xu Bing’s art on February 23\, 2024.

His work is hand drawn with shellac ink on paper. DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of recent sculpture by Tracye Wear. Wear is inspired by her combined interests in Cubist and early 20th Century sculpture with natural forms found in her garden.\n“With her latest series\, Tracye Wear pushes the scale limitations of the ceramic arts while reveling in the life-affirming forms of nature. Not thrown on a potter’s wheel\, these contours are molded\, shaped\, and coil-built\, but become organic beings. Decidedly of the hand\, these vessels’ surfaces are smoothed and rounded yet often animated by the controlled indentations of human fingers.\nTransferring her real-life skills with plants\, soil\, water\, and sunlight from her home’s backyard\, she enters a related studio terrain of pliable clay\, moisture\, the alchemy of glazes\, and finally intense heat. By reenacting the mysteries of how vegetation sprouts and thrives as transformed by photosynthesis\, Wear introduces a verdant vocabulary of seeds\, tendrils\, leaves\, and blossoms to spiraling\, bulbous\, and seemingly pregnant vessels.\nThe artist resists the allure of boldly colored and glossy glazes\, for the most part\, instead seeking the subtleties inherent in transition and gradation. Her experimentation with the layer upon layer of colored glazes—when applied to protruding ribs and sinking recesses—embraces the chemical interactions and revelations that result from the extreme temperatures of high-firing. The transformative heat of the kiln itself provides a final chance interpretation of Wear’s otherwise intentioned deployment of palette and light.\nAlong the way\, viewers may recognize allusions to the Venus of Willendorf\, Hieronymous Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights\, Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s Tower of Babel\, or the shadow and light of Dutch floral still lifes. SUMMARY:Brenda Biondo: Sun to Earth
DESCRIPTION:Koslov Larsen is pleased to present Sun to Earth\, the gallery’s third solo presentation by artist Brenda Biondo. Combining several series of Biondo’s works\, Sun to Earth introduces new ways of looking at common subjects while challenging viewers’ perception of color and three-dimensional space. The works explored throughout the show focus on atmospheric phenomena and other ephemeral components of the natural world. Unnatural (Texas Tumbleweeds) and Prairie Wheels study the interconnectedness of humans and flora\, inspired by the iconic tumbleweed\, an invasive species brought inadvertently to the United States in the 1870s by Eastern European settlers. Influenced heavily by James Turrell’s Skyspaces\, Perceptual Skies emphasizes the limitless potential of light as a subject and the subjectivity of perception. Biondo states\, “Using a visual language that deconstructs the sky portion of the landscape helps articulate questions about how we engage with our environment and the emotional and psychological effects natural light has on humans.” The images in the series follow the formal aesthetics of modern painting\, particularly minimalism\, while emphasizing the ambiguity between the real and the reproduced.\nSun to Earth will be on view at Koslov Larsen from May 3 – June 21\, 2024.

SUMMARY:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is the artist’s first solo museum presentation in the United States. Across an installation\, a video\, and a series of commissioned sculptures\, Erlanger continues her decade-long disruption of the “semiotics of suburbia.” In her practice\, Erlanger thinks of the home as a greater ecosystem containing not only houses but also their surrounding infrastructures and interior architectures.\nAt Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH)\, massive illuminated planet sculptures map the suburban landscape\, positioning the development of home as an environmental force in itself. These new works explore “speculative memory”—how progress can only be understood through hindsight—and what this psychic limitation implies for the artist. Viewers will then move to new diorama sculptures that play on an institutional language of presentation\, positioning the enclosed scenes as already-past. Here\, Erlanger proposes both impossible architectures and terrestrial forms created using strategies of model-making. These works are each marked by changes in season\, emphasizing receding memories of a once-diverse climate.\nThe exhibition culminates in a sitcom set\, riffing on the psychology of interiors as well as acting as a platform to watch Erlanger’s new short film Appliance. The film dovetails recent research into the history and cultural significance of domestic technologies\, such as the shower or washing machine\, with a specific focus on how their operations have been considered interchangeably with human bodily functions. In our age of “polycrisis\,” wherein multiple seismic events occur simultaneously\, If Today Were Tomorrow provides a framework for thinking about the porousness of interior and exterior\, self and non-self\, body and home.\nOlivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow will be accompanied by a catalogue published by Hatje Cantz containing newly commissioned texts about the artist’s practice\, as well as contributions focusing on the interplay between architecture\, psychology\, and science fiction.\nSupport\nMajor support for Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is provided by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.\nContemporary Arts Museum of Houston is funded in part by the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.

DESCRIPTION:Theaster Gates: The Gift and The Renege presents work by the acclaimed Chicago-based artist\, featuring large-scale paintings\, sculptures\, and installations that highlight the seen and unseen dynamics of Freedmen’s Town in Houston’s Fourth Ward. Throughout his career\, Theaster Gates has soulfully elevated our understanding of Black labor\, materials\, place\, and community to revitalize underrecognized neighborhoods by combining urban planning and a multifaceted art practice. His work powerfully highlights the true value Black spaces hold—although often devalued—as sites of American resilience\, liberation\, and redemption. Gates is a shape-shifter\, a world-builder\, and an artist who singularly connects the dots in both poetic and pragmatic ways. For over 20 years he has worked to transform the Southside of Chicago through various initiatives aimed at preserving and continuing the neighborhood’s vital role as a site for Black creativity. His multifaceted practice\, which demonstrates the dual importance of building community and exposing power structures\, has made him one of the most significant artists working in our time.

DESCRIPTION:The Menil Collection will open “Janet Sobel: All-Over” on February 23\, 2024\, featuring some thirty paintings and drawings made by artist Janet Sobel (1893–1968). This exhibition\, the first to focus on Sobel’s highly accomplished and influential abstract paintings\, will explore the artist’s work as one of the first to pioneer a new approach to modern abstraction known as “all-over” painting.

SUMMARY:Gabriel Lester: Odeon
DESCRIPTION:The Blaffer Art Museum is proud to present the first solo museum exhibition in the United States of preeminent European artist Gabriel Lester\, who has gained an international standing for his art\, performance\, and film as well as his dynamic public art installations. Across his now decades-long career\, Lester has developed a captivating cinematic lens through which to see and imagine the world – consistently locating wonder in the seemingly stolid and mundane. For this exhibition Lester is most interested in the interplay between light and shadow\, as well as the seen and unseen\, as he responds to Houston and the fossil fuel industry that so deeply sheathes the region.\nIn the title installation StarStruck\, a dark\, viscous pool of oil is continually interrupted by droplets of water and corresponding flares of brilliant light – piercing a thick chamber of shadow with illuminating transmission. This waking effect is further articulated in the neighboring video sculpture Cosmic Call\, where the artist chases amorphous scenes of the universe through effervescent\, yet ultra low-resolution LED monitors to create a mesmerizing\, if highly elusive display. The capacity for light to simultaneously lead and lose us is expanded in the charmingly immersive installation How to Act as flickering colors surround us – pulsing to the soundtracks of various genres of film and television. The result is familiar and uncanny at once\, evoking the abstract languages of televisual entertainment while also making them strange and disorienting. Early modes of cinema flash before our eyes in the adjacent series Jump Cut\, where methodically rotating cubes house a variety of laser cut tableaux – coming into focus just long enough to dance away\, over and over again. Persistence of vision and retinal residue accumulates here\, propelling the art to work as much before your eyes\, as within and behind them. The final installation marries optical with environmental effect as rays of sun shine through the increasingly perforated ebony towers of Bambaataa\, projecting floating holo-graphic cubes that speak to the fleetingness of so-called structure. Taken and received as a whole\, this exhibition pierces heavy\, weighted geometries and their absolutes with the delightful\, if perplexing magic of discovery.

The exhibit continues through Saturday July 6\, 2024.\n“Delita Martin captures audiences with her powerful imagery\,” said gallery owner Nicole Longnecker. “Since we first exhibited her work in 2017\, her career has continued an upward trajectory around the world. Her narrative portraits of black women combine historical and spiritual elements that empower the viewer.”\nARTIST STATEMENT “The concept of Spirit World\, what I refer to as the ‘Veilscape’ is one that has been embraced by African American women as a powerful tool in their journey towards self-empowerment. The Spirit World or Veilscape is an intangible reality embraced by Black women to nurture their power and potential. It consists of four main elements: duality\, freedom from oppression\, transformation\, and connection to ancestors. Duality is the idea that there are two realms within Spirit World; one that is seen and one that is unseen. This idea has been prevalent among African Americans for centuries as a way to cope with the struggles of racism. In the face of adversity\, Black women have long used this duality to create an inner strength and strength of spirit. By embracing both the seen and unseen aspects of life\, Black women have found ways to deal with both physical and emotional barriers they have had to face throughout history. I have embraced this idea not only as a key part of my spiritual practice but my artistic practice as well. I believe that this duality allows the women in my work to step into their power in both realms.\n“Freedom from oppression is another important aspect of the Veilscape. By embracing this part of their reality\, they can free themselves from some of the oppressive systems they have faced throughout history such as racism and sexism.\nTransformation is yet another important element of the Veilscape. By entering into this reality\, they are able to move beyond the physical limitations imposed upon them by society and tap into their full potential as individuals and offer a different narrative beyond stereotypes. They can explore different possibilities for their lives without worrying about societal expectations or limitations placed upon them because of their race or gender identity. Furthermore\, entering into the Veilscape gives Black women an opportunity for self-reflection which can lead them on a journey towards self-discovery\n“Lastly\, connection to ancestors\, through this lens they are able to recognize their place in a larger narrative by connecting with their foremothers who also faced similar struggles.\n“Through my embrace of Spirit World as part of her artistic practice It is my goal to provides insight into how Black Womanhood can be used for self-empowerment. These works reinforces the bond amongst women and how they co-exist in the physical world of nature and the spiritual realm. Through the layering of various mediums and symbols I can pull the viewer out of a logical and common world and place them within a space that offers a glimpse into sacred meetings between women in a spiritual realm. The duality of women in my work project the spirit and its connection to the physical world\, which reinforces the bond amongst women and how they co- exist in the physical and spiritual realms. By embracing these elements together with creativity and imagination the women in my work are able to bring forth a powerful force within themselves that will propel them forward on their journey towards empowerment regardless of external adversities they may face throughout life.”\nARTIST BIO Delita Martin is an artist based in Huffman\, Texas. She received a BFA in drawing from Texas Southern University and an MFA in printmaking from Purdue University. Formerly a member of the fine arts faculty at UA Little Rock in Arkansas\, Martin currently works as a full-time artist in her studio\, Black Box Press.\nMartin’s work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally. “Delita Martin: Calling Down the Spirits” held at the National Museum of Women in the Arts\, 2020 was Martin’s first solo museum exhibition. Her work toured the country (2016-17) in the Crystal Bridges Museum exhibition\, “State of the Arts: Discovering American Art Now” that included 101 artists from across the United States. In 2015 she was featured in the International Review of African American Art as one of sixteen “African American Artists to Watch” who are gaining national and international recognition.\nPermanent Collections (selected): Bradbury Art Museum\, C.N. Gorman Museum\, Crystal Bridges Museum\, David Driskell Center\, Minneapolis Institute of Art\, Minnesota Museum of American Art\, National Museum of Women in the Arts\, Petrucci Family Foundation\, Studio Museum in Harlem\, Thrivent Financial\, William J. DESCRIPTION:SOM is a multisensory contemporary dance performance that takes its audience into the performers’ dreams through interactive\, immersive theater tactics. Upon entrance\, the audience will be invited by a Pharmacist to take their “medicine” for the sleep study they are about to begin. Once walking into the performance space\, they are entranced in Wild She Dances’ dreamworld.\nThe work plays on the phenomena of humans having the same thematic dreams\, such as falling and waking up just before hitting the ground. This prompts the audience to examine the connection our unconscious minds form with those around us. The evening will also take viewers into less recognizable dreams—dreams that tell the story of an impactful vision near to the performers—yet still find themselves feeling the tether of familiarity and connection.\nThe dreamworld of SOM includes aerial performance\, live music\, audience interaction\, and takes place in a gallery setting allowing the audience to roam the venue during performance.\nAn Open Bar with free drinks will be included at each show.

SUMMARY:ART PERFORMANCES “3PM to Midnight”
DESCRIPTION:Get into the action by attending “3PM to Midnight” at Sabine Street Studios\, which is described as “live figure drawing theater.” Written\, directed and narrated by artist Ray Dunlap\, the short play is designed to engage audience members in sketching the actors\, costumes\, and set design as each of the three characters pause and pose in four separate scenes. Each scene (pose) will last approximately 15 minutes. Chairs and drawing materials will be provided\, but attendees are welcome to bring their own. Attendance is limited to 40 people\, so while admission is free\, registration is requested.\nRay Dunlap is an abstract artist with 30+ years of experience. Born on August 4\, 1972 in Palestine\, Texas\, Dunlap grew up in East Texas\, but also lived in Guam and Japan for 18 years. As an artist\, he has shown in the United States\, Japan and Korea. Dunlap’s style invokes reaction to inspiration and controlled chaos. He likes to take the viewer on an uplifting journey adventure. He shares his stories through his artwork. A former teacher in the GOLDEN Certified Working Artists Program\, he works with acrylic\, clay\, and wood to create art inspired by folklore culture based on his own interpretations.

After a critically-acclaimed debut in 2019\, Disha Zhang’s Elapse returns to the stage for an encore not to be missed. Exploring the idea of aging and the passage of time\, her first piece choreographed for an American company is set to a captivating original score by Zeng Xiaogang. George Balanchine’s Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux is described by New York City Ballet as “an eight-minute display of ballet bravura and technique.” Welch’s The Four Seasons dramatizes the stages of a woman’s life from the vigor of youth in spring to the introspection of old age in winter. Set to Antonio Vivaldi’s beloved score of the same name\, the large ensemble work returns for the first time since its premiere in 2007. Rounding out the program is a world premiere by Dwight Rhoden\, Founding Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer of Complexions Contemporary Ballet – his first for Houston Ballet.
