SUMMARY:Gabriel Lester: Odeon
DESCRIPTION:The Blaffer Art Museum is proud to present the first solo museum exhibition in the United States of preeminent European artist Gabriel Lester\, who has gained an international standing for his art\, performance\, and film as well as his dynamic public art installations. Across his now decades-long career\, Lester has developed a captivating cinematic lens through which to see and imagine the world – consistently locating wonder in the seemingly stolid and mundane. For this exhibition Lester is most interested in the interplay between light and shadow\, as well as the seen and unseen\, as he responds to Houston and the fossil fuel industry that so deeply sheathes the region.\nIn the title installation StarStruck\, a dark\, viscous pool of oil is continually interrupted by droplets of water and corresponding flares of brilliant light – piercing a thick chamber of shadow with illuminating transmission. This waking effect is further articulated in the neighboring video sculpture Cosmic Call\, where the artist chases amorphous scenes of the universe through effervescent\, yet ultra low-resolution LED monitors to create a mesmerizing\, if highly elusive display. The capacity for light to simultaneously lead and lose us is expanded in the charmingly immersive installation How to Act as flickering colors surround us – pulsing to the soundtracks of various genres of film and television. The result is familiar and uncanny at once\, evoking the abstract languages of televisual entertainment while also making them strange and disorienting. Early modes of cinema flash before our eyes in the adjacent series Jump Cut\, where methodically rotating cubes house a variety of laser cut tableaux – coming into focus just long enough to dance away\, over and over again. Persistence of vision and retinal residue accumulates here\, propelling the art to work as much before your eyes\, as within and behind them. The final installation marries optical with environmental effect as rays of sun shine through the increasingly perforated ebony towers of Bambaataa\, projecting floating holo-graphic cubes that speak to the fleetingness of so-called structure. Taken and received as a whole\, this exhibition pierces heavy\, weighted geometries and their absolutes with the delightful\, if perplexing magic of discovery.

DESCRIPTION:The phrase “counter-cartographies” describes Manila-based artist Cian Dayrit interdisciplinary practice of transforming historic maps into portraits of contemporary social conditions. Employing counter- cartography as an approach\, Dayrit charts histories of imperialism\, industrialization\, and systems of subjugation that shape geographical boundaries and cultural narratives around the world. In Summer 2024\, Blaffer will present Dayrit’s first solo museum exhibition in the United States with embroidered tapestries\, paintings\, and sculpture. The exhibition will be accompanied by Countermapping Workshops in Houston to excavate histories of imperialism\, extraction\, and displacement among historically marginalized people\, while summoning new imaginaries that recognize the overlapping global struggles and resistance.

SUMMARY:Dance of Gestures
DESCRIPTION:For her latest solo exhibition\, Dance of Gestures\, Houston-based Colombian artist Loriana Espinel\, takes inspiration from the pre-Columbian pictographs of the Chiribiquete National Park in Colombia to develop a visual system based on the intersection of two different styles of calligraphy: the fluid lines of Japanese ink painting and angular gothic calligraphy.\nDance of Gestures combines both abstract and representational approaches and goals. Espinel writes of her work: “I aim to create a mural that is both abstract and representational. The lines will suggest natural forms while being expressive and dynamic on their own. I want viewers to appreciate both the shapes and lines and their interplay”.\nThe exhibition is part of the annual Sawyer Yards program at Sabine Street Studios’ East Corridor Gallery\, a space dedicated to hosting exhibitions dedicated to the line as an essential\, conceptual element in visual art.\nThe opening reception will be held on Thursday\, July 18 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and the exhibitions is on view from July 18 to August 31. SUMMARY:Earl Staley: The Machine
DESCRIPTION:Sawyer Yards presents Earl Staley: The Machine\, a diverse showcase of the longtime Houston artist’s works on canvas at Sabine Street Studios’ North Gallery.\nThe artworks chosen for this exhibition are large\, densely colorful paintings on canvas that highlight Staley’s variety of approaches to image-making\, mark-making\, and his range of techniques. Even at this stage in his long career\, Staley continues to experiment\, attempting new and different ways of building and finishing a work. The paintings all exist somewhere on a wide spectrum of abstraction and pictorial quality\, as well as physicality. Though landscapes are evident in his work\, no subject is off the table for the artist. For Staley\, the most important considerations are that his pictures be “visually delightful\, intellectually stimulating\, and tell an interesting story.” He further writes:\n“I found my voice when I stopped thinking about making art and stared telling my life story.\nand “All art must contain love of life and an awareness of death.”\nThe exhibition is on view through August 31\, and is free and open to the public. Join the artist for a reception on Thursday\, July 18\, from 6-8pm.\nArtist Biography:\nEarl Staley grew up in the suburbs of Chicago\, Illinois and resides in Houston\, Texas. He is an artist and teacher with more than 60 years of experience. Mr. Staley holds Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees. He taught at Washington University in St. Louis\, Rice University in Houston\, and the University of St. Thomas in Houston\, where he was chairperson of the Art Department. Today he teaches in the Fine Art program at Lonestar College in Tomball\, TX. Mr. Staley is the recipient of three grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. In 1981 he received the Rome Prize in Painting from the American Academy in Rome\, Italy and he resided in Rome for 4 years. Mr. Staley’s paintings look back to his artistic roots and forward to new interpretations of the myths and symbols embedded in his life.

DESCRIPTION:From June 15 to August 18\, 2024 Please join TXRX Labs in the Techne Gallery for a talented membership showcase of our woodworking community.\nObjects will include furniture\, Maloof inspired chairs\, hand turned bowls\, cutting boards and decorative inlay applications through VCarve\, CNC work\, live edge work\, wood turning and various hand finishing techniques.\nCome opening weekend to engage directly with the craftsmen behind the creations to learn more about woodworking processes and their lifestyle insights\, inspirations and techniques. SUMMARY:Latino cARTographies Digital Board Exhibit of Houston Artists
DESCRIPTION:We are featuring an exhibit with the University of Houston that features Latin artists through an art digital board that also features our mural. Under the leadership of Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, Director of the University of Houston’s (UH) Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies (CMALS) launched the groundbreaking digital board\, Latino cARTographies: Mapping the Past\, Present\, and Future of Houston’s Latino Visual Art. The exhibit is on display from Friday\, April 26 to December 31\, 2024.\nThis portable\, bilingual\, and interactive digital board funded by the University of Houston is the result of a three-year collaboration led by Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, with the curatorial leadership of former vice president of the National Mexican Museum of Art in Chicago\, Juana Guzman\, the CMALS Research Team\, and the International Gibson Group.\nTickets at the door are only $5 and include two other exhibits!\nClick HERE to read an article about the exhibit in Houston History Magazine.\nThe idea for Latino cARTographies began when Dr. Quiroz organized the city of Houston to host the country’s premier Latino art event\, Latino Art Now! Dr. Quiroz conceived the idea for the digital board and viewed it as a way to create a dynamic but permanent tribute to the Latino artists of Houston. She then persuaded the Gibson Group to collaborate with CMALS to achieve this goal. The result is a twenty-first-century mode to access the arts and experience culture – Latino cARTographies – that maps the past\, present\, and future of Houston’s Latino art. By utilizing technology that preserves\, represents\, and promotes Houston’s Latino visual arts and communities in an equitable and inclusive manner\, CMALS is transforming how we experience art in the twenty-first century.\nLatino cARTographies features our commissioned a mural to celebrate the many contributions of our city’s Mexican-American community. In the spirit of the great Mexican muralists\, this vibrant collective artwork\, Mexican-American History & Culture in 20th Century Houston\, highlights the places\, personalities\, concepts and events that shaped the Mexican-American community and laid the foundation for the multicultural city we live in today. Set in Connally Plaza against a dramatic backdrop of City Hall and the downtown skyline\, the mural is a cultural landmark in the historic heart of Houston. This mural spotlights 38 places\, personalities\, and events that played a key role in the growth of this community and provides recognition for the countless and essential contributions of Mexican Americans to the economy\, culture\, and vitality of our city in the 1900s. Mural artists Laura López Cano and Jesse Sifuentes\, along with key fundraisers and government officials celebrated the unveiling to Houstonians in September 2018 for National Hispanic Heritage Month. Since then\, we have several outdoor activities being celebrated around the mural for National Hispanic Heritage Month and host field trips telling the stories behind the mural. The vibrant mural\, located at 1100 Bagby Street\, is now complemented by the interactive\, digital board that is inside our museum gallery.\nAbout the Exhibitor: Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies\, University of Houston\nThe Center for Mexican American and Latino/a Studies (CMALS) at the University of Houston was established in 1972 as an interdisciplinary academic program encompassing the liberal arts\, education and social sciences focusing on the Mexican American and broader Latino experience in the U.S. Its mission is to advance knowledge\, promote critical thinking and foster the value of service to the community. This involves designing a broad spectrum of public and scholarly programs.
