SUMMARY:Scenes From Films I'll Never Make
DESCRIPTION:Marking a major shift in Maloney’s practice\, Scenes From Films I’ll Never Make\, introduces a selection of 10 new oil paintings made by the artist within the last year. As the title suggests\, a lot of the pieces were first conceived as ideas for films that for one reason or another never came to be. Rather than letting these stories fall into the ether\, Maloney breathes new life into them with his brush\, imbuing his images with elements of surrealism or abstraction to help portray the psychological state of his characters. This work stems from Maloney’s own battles with mental illness\, isolation\, and anxiety. However he balances everything with revelry in the comical absurdity of modern life. Maloney’s ultimate concern is with the power of stories and how we as an audience connect to them.\nThe exhibition is on view at Sabine Street’s East Corridor Gallery through November 2.

SUMMARY:Afi Ese and Jaymes Earl: Interconnected Opulence: The African influence on Black urban adornment
DESCRIPTION:The concept of opulence revolves around the symbols of wealth and status that hold significance within a particular community. This show highlights the urban trend of having gold teeth. Coined as grillz by Houston hip-hop culture\, gold teeth have historically held significance in the black community as a symbol of wealth\, success\, and individuality. In many African and African American cultures\, gold teeth are seen as a form of adornment and self-expression\, reflecting a person’s personal style and cultural identity. Additionally\, gold teeth have been used as a way for individuals to display their financial status and social standing\, especially in communities where traditional forms of wealth may not be as easily accessible. Overall\, gold teeth hold a special place in the black community as a symbol of cultural pride\, creativity\, and defiance\, reminding individuals of their heritage and the struggles they have overcome.

SUMMARY:WiVLA Presents: Entangled
DESCRIPTION:Women in the Visual and Literary Arts (WiVLA) is excited to announce that its 2024 Biennial Collaboration\, one of WiVLA’s hallmark events\, will be hosted at Sabine Street Studios North Gallery from September 12 through November 2. The Biennial Collaboration\, which began in 1994\, enables a visual or performance artist to collaborate with a literary artist to produce new work based on a chosen theme. The theme for the 2024 collaboration is “Entangled”.\nFor 30 years and counting\, WiVLA has been a hub of inspiration and learning. It’s where imaginative women connect\, find diverse opportunities to express their creativity\, and learn from one another in workshops\, monthly meetings\, exhibitions\, and literary readings. Join us on Friday\, September 20\, for a special gathering wherein the collaborative duos will present and discuss their collaborative works. For more information about WiVLA membership\, sponsorship\, and events\, visit our website at Wivla.org

SUMMARY:Architecture Walk: Woodland Heights
DESCRIPTION:The William A. Wilson Realty Co. began developing Woodland Heights in 1907 on 136 acres of land that was once part of John Austin’s Mexican land grant. The neighborhood was one of Houston’s first “streetcar suburbs” — a streetcar line ran from downtown along Houston Avenue to just outside the Woodland Heights gates\, enabling working-class Houstonians to live in a lovely wooded setting and easily commute to their jobs.\nOur 90-minute docent-guided tour covers several early 20th century architectural styles found in the neighborhood\, including the foursquare\, cottage and bungalow\, and highlights the live oak trees Wilson planted in 1907\, which have matured into lush canopies over Woodland Heights’ streets.
