SUMMARY:5 Simultaneous Solo Shows at Reeves Art + Design
DESCRIPTION:Reeves Art + Design is excited to announce their upcoming simultaneous solo show lineup for April. The exhibitions will be on view April 20th\, 2024 through May 4th\, 2024. The opening reception will take place on Saturday\, April 20th\, 2024\, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Admission is free and open to the public.\nBAKERZDUZEN: Alter Ego\nAlter Ego is a show created by Justin\, an artist better known as Bakerzduzen\, who has been creating art for the last 11 years. He has always imagined that Bakerzduzen was sort of his secret identity\, and that he is like a super villain with the sole purpose of melting minds with his creations. Each character\, creature\, or ghoul that he brings to life is a different part of himself. A small glimpse into who he is as a human being.\nThe pieces for Alter Ego were created over the last year or so with the inspiration of building a unique world. Justin describes his goal best: “Hopefully it inspires you\, or makes you feel weird. Maybe it’ll even get you to laugh a little\, but most of all I hope you just simply enjoy the experience.”\nAlex Paulus: All I have to do is live until I die\nAll I have to do is live until I die is a show by Memphis-based artist Alex Paulus designed around the idea of scale and proportion. The size of an object can make it seem important or unimportant. And we all measure things according to the size of ourselves. Things that are smaller than us can seem trivial\, while larger objects can feel overwhelming. Yet\, when considering the vastness of the universe\, our planet seems tiny and inconsequential.\nHis current series focuses on small figures within expansive landscapes. By placing tiny people within large areas\, it creates a sense of insignificance. This can be frightening to think about\, but it can also be comforting. Knowing that we are so small\, no matter what we do\, it ultimately doesn’t impact the universe on a grand scale.\nIn All I have to do is live until I die\, Alex asks the viewer to think about how humans fit into this world and how small we actually are compared to the rest of the universe. He is interested in the purpose of human existence\, but it seems like we do a lot of weird things for no reason. Through his work\, he’d like to learn as much as he can with his time here on Earth.\nEvan Pardue: Warnings\nEvan Pardue’s first solo show with Reeves\, Warnings\, will spotlight a series of smaller paintings executed over the past five years. Primarily featuring animals\, the small works are distinct in Pardue’s oeuvre for their ambitious execution and distinct narratives. Known for his large-scale figurative paintings\, these works explore an underrepresented part of his studio practice not seen by Houston audiences.\n“It’s an honor to show at Reeves\,” says Pardue. “After seeing the first Mark Flood show\, I knew I wanted to work with a gallery like Reeves. They take risks\, believe in their artists\, and bring a refreshing perspective to our arts scene.”\nKevin Gilmore: Lonely Family Reunion\nIn Lonely Family Reunion\, local Houston artist Kevin Gilmore embarks on a poignant exploration of the profound solitude experienced by individuals amidst our current bustling world. Each brushstroke delicately unveils the nuanced emotions of those grappling with social awkwardness\, inviting viewers to empathize with their inner struggles. Embracing the rich heritage of Aboriginal art\, he infuses his creations with intricate dots\, symbolizing not only the beauty of indigenous culture but also serving as a powerful metaphor for the interconnectedness of human experiences within the vast canvas of loneliness.\nTyra J: Celestial Origins- A Multiverse of Worlds and Souls\nCelestial Origins\, an exhibition by the multidisciplinary artist and designer\, Tyra J\, invites attendees to step into a multiverse where worlds are in constant continental drift\, rendering permanent shelter unnecessary. Nomadic existence becomes the norm\, prompting a reconsideration of our fundamental understanding of home and belonging. If souls inhabit non-human forms\, how would they describe themselves? The exhibition encourages a departure from traditional labels like ‘artists’ in favor of the more inclusive term ‘storytellers\,’ where core characteristics stand as the only meaningful traits.\nCentral to Celestial Origins is the interactive viewing of sculptures\, each accompanied by messages detailing the unique operations of each world and the captivating journey each soul has undertaken. This approach invites attendees to actively engage with the exhibit\, fostering a deeper understanding of the intricate narratives woven into the fabric of each creation.

SUMMARY:Beyond Broadway Series: Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age
DESCRIPTION:In Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age\, he covers all the bases: sex\, death and bacchanalia\, with a set list as eclectic as the man himself. Songs from Cabaret authors Kander and Ebb blend with contemporary favourites and even a self-penned paean against plastic surgery. ‘I am literally the only person on American TV who has not had botox!’ he quips. He also discusses the effects of gravity\, the time the mum from the Brady Bunch punched him\, and what his dog taught him about the quality of life.

SUMMARY:The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare
DESCRIPTION:The Classical Theatre Company will wrap up its Season of Iconic Women with William Shakespeare’s comic masterpiece\, The Taming of the Shrew. Having not produced a Shakespeare piece since Henry V in 2015\, nor a Shakespeare comedy since The Merchant of Venice in 2013\, CTC is primed and ready to dive into The Bard once again.\nThe Taming of the Shrew follows the story of Katherine who is being sold off as a wife by her father to the highest bidder. Her boldness and stubborn streak have made her unmarriable by society\, but her sister\, Bianca\, cannot marry until the elder sister has been so. Enter Petruchio\, a cad who is determined to win over Katherine to be his wife. An explosive battle of the sexes ensues in this electrically charged love story that will have audiences crying with laughter.\n“This play is my favorite Shakespeare comedy\,” says CTC Executive Artistic Director John Johnston. “But it’s got some problematic aspects that don’t really play at face value for a modern audience. The idea of a woman being ‘tamed’ by a man to be married is creepy at best. So\, to address this issue\, our production is going to set the play as a mid-20th-century sitcom. Think Father Knows Best\, The Donna Reed Show\, or The Dick Van Dyke Show. Using the script to explore the values that we once held in our popular culture\, and do still to this day\, in some respects. Our goal is to examine and critique the treatment of women rather than glorify it\, and this lens of pre-feminist situational comedies will help us to do that.”

SUMMARY:Stagolee and the Funeral of a Dangerous Word
DESCRIPTION:World Premiere\nBy Thomas Meloncon\nThe play takes place in an office in a small town in East Texas where the local NAACP chapter is planning a funeral for the “N word”. At the same time\, a bigoted white man is on his way to that same office to have a frank discussion with the legendary Stagolee\, a black man known for his swagger. The two men have had a fight at their workplace\, and this “conversation” is actually a court-ordered intervention\, facilitated by a visiting Jewish psychologist. This new play examines different points of view along the racial divide and does so without judgement\, ultimately bringing its characters into a better understanding of each other. A world premiere production of nationally recognized Houston playwright Thomas Meloncon’s newest work.\nThomas Meloncon is an Associate Professor of Theatre in the Visual and Performing Art Dept. in the College of Liberal Arts and Behavioral Sciences at Texas Southern University. He is the author of plays that have been produced nationally and internationally. His poetry publications include Recollections and Poetry in E Minor. His list of plays includes\, Johnnie B. Goode published in Acting Up and Getting Down: An Anthology of African American Playwrights of Texas\, published by University of Texas Press\, The Man Who Saved New Orleans published in Callaloo: A Journal of African Diaspora Arts and Letters by John Hopkins University Press. His popular stage plays include The Diary of Black Men\, Whatever Happened to Black Love\, If Beds Could talk\, Jump the Broom\, and Where Were You in ’65\, to name a few. Mr. Meloncon is the Narrator on the recent Fade to Black “Thank You\, Ten” documentary film\, celebrating their 10 years of mentoring and producing new African American playwrights from across the U.S. He is the featured poet on several Jazz musical albums\, and his folksong\, “Ain’t Gonna Wait Too Long” can be heard in season 3 episode 6 of the TV series SNOWFALL. SUMMARY:Beetlejuice
DESCRIPTION:He earned his stripes on Broadway… now the ghost-with-the-most is coming to Austin.\nIt’s showtime! Based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved film\, this hilarious musical tells the story of Lydia Deetz\, a strange and unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon with a thing for stripes. With an irreverent book\, an astonishing set\, and a score that’s out of this Netherworld\, BEETLEJUICE is “SCREAMINGLY GOOD FUN!” (Variety). And under its uproarious surface (six feet under\, to be exact)\, it’s a remarkably touching show about family\, love\, and making the most of every Day-O!\nBeetlejuice contains strong language\, mature references\, and a lot of the crazy\, inappropriate stuff you would expect from a deranged demon. Recommended for ages 13 and up.\nPresented by the Memorial Hermann Broadway at the Hobby Center

SUMMARY:CLEANSED by Sarah Kane
DESCRIPTION:The Catastrophic Theatre presents the Regional Premiere of\nSarah Kane’s CLEANSED\n“LOVE ME OR KILL ME”\nIn her brief boundary breaking career\, Sarah Kane’s work prompted the term “a theatre of extremes\,” yet CLEANSED comes soaked through with hope. Explosively aching\, hauntingly poetic\, and disarmingly tender\, Kane delivers a fever-dream fable of unimaginable brutality and miraculous beauty.\nIn a former university\, society’s “undesirables” are subjected to a series of experiments designed to test the limits of love on the battlefield of the human body.\nGiven our country’s immediate threat to the bodies and lives of those of us who look\, live\, or love beyond the confines of conservative ‘norms\,’ 26 years after it was written\, CLEANSED feels nightmarishly prescient. More than a play\, in 2024’s America\, CLEANSED feels like a cause.\n“Once you have perceived that life is very cruel\, the only response is to live with as much humanity\, humor and freedom as you can.”\n– Sarah Kane\nThe regional premiere of CLEANSED is co-directed by core artist T Lavois Thiebaud and founding artistic director Jason Nodler\, reuniting the creative team behind Kane’s 4.48 Psychosis which The Houston Press called “an imaginative bulldozer of a production.”\nThe production features choreography by Adam Castan͂eda and set design by Afsaneh Aayani. James Templeton serves as sound\, special effects and video designer as well as composer. Lighting design provided by Hudson Davis\, properties design by Lauren Davis and costumes by Juan Saracay. We’re thrilled to collaborate with the sculpture group\, Moon Papas Art for set construction.\nThe cast includes Raymond Compton\, Bryan Kaplún\, Ruben Ramires Da Silva\, T Lavois Thiebaud\, Chuck Vaughn\, Clarity Welch\, Abraham Zeus Zapata and Walt Zipprian with musicians Sarah Moessner and James Templeton.\nNo one under 16 years of age admitted.

SUMMARY:'Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu Heat Silhouette'
DESCRIPTION:Asia Society Texas is pleased to present Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu Heat Silhouette\, the organization’s first public art installation. This collaboration between Cuban American artist Rafael Domenech and Vietnamese American artist Tomas Vu assumes the form of a dynamic outdoor pavilion with two stages\, occupying AST’s 13\,000-square-foot lot at the intersection of Oakdale and Caroline Streets in the heart of Houston’s Museum District. Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu Heat Silhouette is commissioned in partnership with the University of Houston’s Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts.\nDescribed by the artists as a form of “urban acupuncture\,” Heat Silhouette is a physical structure designed to welcome the spontaneous circulation of people\, energy\, and events. The outdoor pavilion takes cues from college campuses\, popular culture\, and experimental magazines. Made of wood\, aluminum framing\, and laser-cut construction mesh — the very materials used to build the city of Houston — the pavilion becomes an extension of the museum and a public programming space. The title itself references the most omnipresent weather condition of Houston the summer’s intense heat\, a heat so palpable that it feels as if it occupies actual space\, creating a silhouette or edge.\nFor the artists\, the pavilion resists merely being a form of architecture. Instead\, the pavilion physically operates as an experimental magazine\, referencing the graphic processes seen in radical publications from the 1960s and 1970s like Kontexts\, an important catalyst of avant-garde poetry. Readers do not flip Heat Silhouette’s pages; instead\, they become viewers that are invited to walk in\, around\, and through the publication. Laser-cut texts appropriated from popular science-fiction films\, poetry\, and other sources intermingle to form multiple layers and viewpoints that shift with the sunlight. Heat Silhouette is a space of active production filled with theater-like compartments — a site where text\, image\, and pattern coalesce into a kind of urban camouflage.

SUMMARY:Xu Bing: Word Alchemy
DESCRIPTION:‘Xu Bing: Word Alchemy’ assembles more than 50 of Xu Bing’s most important woodcut prints\, videos\, drawings\, installations\, and other ephemera representing almost 50 years of the artist’s creative output. Starting with Xu’s early engagements with social realism and Western art historical traditions alike\, the exhibition charts the evolution of the artist’s linguistic experiments which challenge and expand not only the history of Chinese landscape painting\, but the canons of contemporary art.\nBorn in China and now working in both Brooklyn and Beijing\, artist Xu Bing (b. 1955) is widely considered to be one of the most important artists to emerge from China in the 20th century. Focusing on the artist’s longstanding engagement with words and language\, ‘Word Alchemy’ is the most comprehensive exhibition on this theme so far\, and around one-third of the objects in the exhibition are being shown in the U.S. for the first time.\nHighlights of the exhibition include Xu Bing’s early works\, his private never-before-seen notebook\, landmark prints including the Series of Repetitions handscroll\, a new Background Story with a connection to Zhao Mengfu’s famous ‘Autumn Colors on the Qiao and Hua Mountains’ handscroll\, a new Texas-themed ‘Square Word Calligraphy\,’ and a new installation of ‘Monkeys Grasp for the Moon’ in Asia Society Texas’ Fayez Sarofim Grand Hall.\nOn the occasion of the exhibition\, Asia Society Texas will publish a full-color exhibition catalogue and host a symposium on Xu Bing’s art on February 23\, 2024.

SUMMARY:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is the artist’s first solo museum presentation in the United States. Across an installation\, a video\, and a series of commissioned sculptures\, Erlanger continues her decade-long disruption of the “semiotics of suburbia.” In her practice\, Erlanger thinks of the home as a greater ecosystem containing not only houses but also their surrounding infrastructures and interior architectures.\nAt Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH)\, massive illuminated planet sculptures map the suburban landscape\, positioning the development of home as an environmental force in itself. These new works explore “speculative memory”—how progress can only be understood through hindsight—and what this psychic limitation implies for the artist. Viewers will then move to new diorama sculptures that play on an institutional language of presentation\, positioning the enclosed scenes as already-past. Here\, Erlanger proposes both impossible architectures and terrestrial forms created using strategies of model-making. These works are each marked by changes in season\, emphasizing receding memories of a once-diverse climate.\nThe exhibition culminates in a sitcom set\, riffing on the psychology of interiors as well as acting as a platform to watch Erlanger’s new short film Appliance. The film dovetails recent research into the history and cultural significance of domestic technologies\, such as the shower or washing machine\, with a specific focus on how their operations have been considered interchangeably with human bodily functions. In our age of “polycrisis\,” wherein multiple seismic events occur simultaneously\, If Today Were Tomorrow provides a framework for thinking about the porousness of interior and exterior\, self and non-self\, body and home.\nOlivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow will be accompanied by a catalogue published by Hatje Cantz containing newly commissioned texts about the artist’s practice\, as well as contributions focusing on the interplay between architecture\, psychology\, and science fiction.\nSupport\nMajor support for Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is provided by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.\nContemporary Arts Museum of Houston is funded in part by the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.

SUMMARY:Critical Geography – FotoFest Biennial 2024
DESCRIPTION:The FotoFest Biennial 2024 central exhibition\, “Critical Geography”\, reexamines traditional Western and historical understandings of geography while expanding these investigations to new realms. Borrowing its name from the subdiscipline of geography that questions and challenges power structures\, inequality\, and the dominant ideologies shaping physical space\, Critical Geography explores how space\, place\, and communities are influenced by social\, economic\, ecological\, and political forces. By critically analyzing these dynamics\, the works in the exhibition provoke conversations around social justice\, environmental sustainability\, and transformative change.\n“Our intent is that the 2024 Biennial\, featuring both existing and newly commissioned works from local and international artists\, will allow viewers to engage in important dialogues around the social dimensions of space and our shared planet\,” says Steven Evans\, Executive Director of FotoFest. “We look forward to once again celebrating Houston’s vibrant art and photo community while embracing these new perspectives around place-making\, the image\, and geography.”\n“Critical Geography” features a diverse range of image-based practices\, representing artists from photographers and storytellers whose works shed light on systemic oppression\, violence\, and urgent environmental concerns to image-makers who appropriate mapping\, social media\, and technology in order to explore inequality in colonial and post-colonial contexts. The exhibition highlights a range of unorthodox strategies employed to construct new narratives around place and community while imagining alternative organizations of social space. The Biennial exhibition includes several site-specific works and new commissions by FotoFest.
