SUMMARY:Brenda Biondo: Sun to Earth
DESCRIPTION:Koslov Larsen is pleased to present Sun to Earth\, the gallery’s third solo presentation by artist Brenda Biondo. Combining several series of Biondo’s works\, Sun to Earth introduces new ways of looking at common subjects while challenging viewers’ perception of color and three-dimensional space. The works explored throughout the show focus on atmospheric phenomena and other ephemeral components of the natural world. Unnatural (Texas Tumbleweeds) and Prairie Wheels study the interconnectedness of humans and flora\, inspired by the iconic tumbleweed\, an invasive species brought inadvertently to the United States in the 1870s by Eastern European settlers. Influenced heavily by James Turrell’s Skyspaces\, Perceptual Skies emphasizes the limitless potential of light as a subject and the subjectivity of perception. Biondo states\, “Using a visual language that deconstructs the sky portion of the landscape helps articulate questions about how we engage with our environment and the emotional and psychological effects natural light has on humans.” The images in the series follow the formal aesthetics of modern painting\, particularly minimalism\, while emphasizing the ambiguity between the real and the reproduced.\nSun to Earth will be on view at Koslov Larsen from May 3 – June 21\, 2024.

His art transports audiences to a fantastical realm where animals and plants possess human-like qualities and profound insights. Haveron’s pieces encourage viewers to engage with the alternate reality he has crafted\, offering both entertainment and opportunities for reflection.\nJeff Jennings’ work seamlessly integrates architectural elements and geometric shapes\, resulting in playful compositions that captivate the viewers’ eye. Through his use of color\, Jennings creates visually striking pieces that are dynamic and evoke intrigue.\nKelli Scott Kelley has been painting and collaging\, using vintage linens and other repurposed fabric supports\, which allows for a more ecological art making practice. Her pieces are inspired by the personal\, psychological and the sociopolitical. Kelley is moved by the exquisite beauty in the world\, as well as the absurdity and ugliness. Her art practice is a means to mine and express deep truths about the impending demise of the natural world.\nScott Madison is a sculptor who makes custom boxes\, furniture and lamps from various metals including aluminum\, brass\, bronze and stainless steel. He meticulously constructs his sculptures\, paying careful consideration to the texture\, shape\, and composition of each piece.\nSteve Murphy engages in the classical elements of sculpture\, form\, volume\, surface and edge. His body of work is the result of a continued reductive investigation of those sculptural elements.\nBecky Newsom creates sculpted painted canvases that result in intricate and delicate works of art that capture the essence of organic forms.\nAnn Stautberg photography largely stems from her home\, she photographs the sky and botanical silhouetted shapes as her garden is an ongoing source of inspiration. Each photograph is printed with archival inks onto stretched canvas\, she then tints the pieces with translucent photographic oils by hand.\nBob Russell is fascinated with the complex issues that make up one’s everyday life\, and the simple beauty one finds in nature when the time is taken to observe these things. Whether it’s a daunting cloud formation before a spring storm\, or an autumnal field of rust-colored grasses that line the highway blowing in the wind\, the intricate patterns on the backs of dragonfly larvae\, or errant marks made on freeway exits by truckers\, as the tires try to stay the course.\nFrank X. Tolbert 2 artistic career is marked by his ability to mix various mediums\, techniques\, and themes seamlessly. His works often delve into the intersection of nature\, culture\, and human experiences\, resulting in visually stunning and thought provoking pieces. Through his art\, Tolbert has consistently pushed boundaries\, challenging conventional norms and inviting viewers to engage in a deeper dialogue.\nThe opening reception on June 22 will offer attendees a first look at the exhibition\, an opportunity to meet the artists\, and engage in enlightening conversations about the works on display. Complimentary refreshments will be served during the event.\nThe “Through Time” exhibition will run from June 22 to August 18 at Andrew Durham Gallery. His work powerfully highlights the true value Black spaces hold—although often devalued—as sites of American resilience\, liberation\, and redemption. Gates is a shape-shifter\, a world-builder\, and an artist who singularly connects the dots in both poetic and pragmatic ways. For over 20 years he has worked to transform the Southside of Chicago through various initiatives aimed at preserving and continuing the neighborhood’s vital role as a site for Black creativity. His multifaceted practice\, which demonstrates the dual importance of building community and exposing power structures\, has made him one of the most significant artists working in our time.

SUMMARY:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is the artist’s first solo museum presentation in the United States. Across an installation\, a video\, and a series of commissioned sculptures\, Erlanger continues her decade-long disruption of the “semiotics of suburbia.” In her practice\, Erlanger thinks of the home as a greater ecosystem containing not only houses but also their surrounding infrastructures and interior architectures.\nAt Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH)\, massive illuminated planet sculptures map the suburban landscape\, positioning the development of home as an environmental force in itself. These new works explore “speculative memory”—how progress can only be understood through hindsight—and what this psychic limitation implies for the artist. Viewers will then move to new diorama sculptures that play on an institutional language of presentation\, positioning the enclosed scenes as already-past. Here\, Erlanger proposes both impossible architectures and terrestrial forms created using strategies of model-making. These works are each marked by changes in season\, emphasizing receding memories of a once-diverse climate.\nThe exhibition culminates in a sitcom set\, riffing on the psychology of interiors as well as acting as a platform to watch Erlanger’s new short film Appliance. The film dovetails recent research into the history and cultural significance of domestic technologies\, such as the shower or washing machine\, with a specific focus on how their operations have been considered interchangeably with human bodily functions. In our age of “polycrisis\,” wherein multiple seismic events occur simultaneously\, If Today Were Tomorrow provides a framework for thinking about the porousness of interior and exterior\, self and non-self\, body and home.\nOlivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow will be accompanied by a catalogue published by Hatje Cantz containing newly commissioned texts about the artist’s practice\, as well as contributions focusing on the interplay between architecture\, psychology\, and science fiction.\nSupport\nMajor support for Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is provided by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.\nContemporary Arts Museum of Houston is funded in part by the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.

SUMMARY:Gabriel Lester: Odeon
DESCRIPTION:The Blaffer Art Museum is proud to present the first solo museum exhibition in the United States of preeminent European artist Gabriel Lester\, who has gained an international standing for his art\, performance\, and film as well as his dynamic public art installations. Across his now decades-long career\, Lester has developed a captivating cinematic lens through which to see and imagine the world – consistently locating wonder in the seemingly stolid and mundane. For this exhibition Lester is most interested in the interplay between light and shadow\, as well as the seen and unseen\, as he responds to Houston and the fossil fuel industry that so deeply sheathes the region.\nIn the title installation StarStruck\, a dark\, viscous pool of oil is continually interrupted by droplets of water and corresponding flares of brilliant light – piercing a thick chamber of shadow with illuminating transmission. This waking effect is further articulated in the neighboring video sculpture Cosmic Call\, where the artist chases amorphous scenes of the universe through effervescent\, yet ultra low-resolution LED monitors to create a mesmerizing\, if highly elusive display. The capacity for light to simultaneously lead and lose us is expanded in the charmingly immersive installation How to Act as flickering colors surround us – pulsing to the soundtracks of various genres of film and television. The result is familiar and uncanny at once\, evoking the abstract languages of televisual entertainment while also making them strange and disorienting. Early modes of cinema flash before our eyes in the adjacent series Jump Cut\, where methodically rotating cubes house a variety of laser cut tableaux – coming into focus just long enough to dance away\, over and over again. Persistence of vision and retinal residue accumulates here\, propelling the art to work as much before your eyes\, as within and behind them. The final installation marries optical with environmental effect as rays of sun shine through the increasingly perforated ebony towers of Bambaataa\, projecting floating holo-graphic cubes that speak to the fleetingness of so-called structure. Taken and received as a whole\, this exhibition pierces heavy\, weighted geometries and their absolutes with the delightful\, if perplexing magic of discovery.

DESCRIPTION:The phrase “counter-cartographies” describes Manila-based artist Cian Dayrit interdisciplinary practice of transforming historic maps into portraits of contemporary social conditions. Employing counter- cartography as an approach\, Dayrit charts histories of imperialism\, industrialization\, and systems of subjugation that shape geographical boundaries and cultural narratives around the world. In Summer 2024\, Blaffer will present Dayrit’s first solo museum exhibition in the United States with embroidered tapestries\, paintings\, and sculpture. The exhibition will be accompanied by Countermapping Workshops in Houston to excavate histories of imperialism\, extraction\, and displacement among historically marginalized people\, while summoning new imaginaries that recognize the overlapping global struggles and resistance.

SUMMARY:Collaborative Art & Wellness Session
DESCRIPTION:The Collaborative Art & Wellness Session encourages attendees to explore the ways that UNBOUND living can positively affect them in a wholistic way. In phase one\, all will be welcomed to use art tools to add their UNBOUND expressions (words\, poems\, prose\, drawings) to a larger art piece. Once complete\, contributors will gather and share what they added and the why behind it. In phase two\, attendees will be led through an improvisational movement class with choreographer/artist Dr. Lindsay Gary. Phase three\, led by Sha Davis\, consists of a breathwork/soundbath/meditation session. The final phase will include a wellness panel of mental and physical health experts who will lead a community discussion on the topic.

SUMMARY:“From Plantation to Emancipation – The Freedom Experience” is a “Houston Signature Experience” by Visit Houston
DESCRIPTION:During your tour of three historic houses that tell Houston’s stories from plantation to emancipation\, the talented actor brings the hardships of slavery and the victory of freedom to life in dramatic reenactments. The historical script was written by Martha Whiting-Goddard\, Reverend Jack Yates’ great granddaughter\, who lived in the Yates House that was relocated to Sam Houston Park.\nExplore the following three houses that are designated by UNESCO as Sites of Memory for their “Routes of Enslaved Peoples’ Project” – 1847 Kellum-Noble House; 1866 Fourth Ward Cottage; and 1870 Yates House. “Sites of Memory\,” or “Sites of Conscience” are historic places that activate the power of memory to engage the public in a deeper understanding of the past\, inspiring action to shape a more just future. These sites break the silence surrounding slavery\, and place the tragedy into our universal memory. It is only through dialogue that we can have peace and reconciliation. We have a duty to remember the crimes committed against humanity by our ancestors\, especially as we see the return of prejudice and discrimination today.\nThe talented reenactor\, Khi Stephens\, brings the hardships of slavery and the victory of freedom to life through song\, a Library of Congress slave narrative\, and a portrayal written by a descendant of the Reverend Jack Yates. Stephens studied theater in Los Angeles and was coached by Martha Whiting-Goddard on her roles.\nFrom Plantation to Emancipation – The Freedom Experience begins on Saturday\, February 10 in celebration of Black History Month. These 90-minute tours are offered on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month; from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.\nGroups of 10 or more are encouraged to make a reservation at least two (2) weeks in advance. How can an author play with subtext in conversations between characters? How do you juggle multiple voices in a single scene? How do characters talk to each other and how does this illuminate the nuances in their relationships? How can characters use conversation to deceive one another?\nThis workshop will consider ways that authors use dialogue to develop characters\, build worlds\, and advance the story’s plots. We will examine the ways authors use cadence and word choice to round out characters and move the story forward.
