DESCRIPTION:BOX 13 ArtSpace is pleased to present our next round of exhibitions opening Friday September 6\, 2024 6pm to 9pm. BOX 13 ArtSpace is delighted to present Back BOX gallery “los archivos” \, an exhibition of sculptural and photo-based works by Mexico City-based artist Elizabeth Chang. Moving to our Window BOX gallery space we have “PUSH/PULL”\, a transdisciplinary exhibition project\, showcases new works by aisha tida\, ARCOS\, and Leila Mnekbi in the Window BOX gallery. Centering intimate interactive dance and sound performances within a quilted installation\, PUSH/PULL invites audience-participants to explore notions of authorship and agency while questioning the patterns\, loops\, and illusions that we wish to escape. Finally Cody Arnall is exhibiting an installation\, “When You’re Done Dying”\, in the Front BOX Gallery. “When You’re Done Dying” \, is an immersive experience of light emitted from sculptural recreations of abandoned business signage manipulated by indiscernible forces.\nThe exhibitions continue through October 5\, 2024. An Opening Reception will be held on Friday September 6\, 2024 6pm to 9pm at BOX 13 ArtSpace\, 6700 Harrisburg\, Houston\, TX 77011.\nA special thank you to Houston Arts Alliance\, the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs\, The Brown Foundation and all who have helped to support our programing.

SUMMARY:Paul Manes "Paintings and Drawings\, 2024" Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Redbud Arts Center is honored to present Artist Paul Manes with his exhibition titled “Paintings and Drawings\, 2024” in our West Gallery.\nPaul Manes has long explored compositional structures that verge on the “all-over\,” achieving a unique blend of dynamism and classicism in his work. His art places familiar\, recognizable images within a conceptualized framework\, creating a harmonious yet thought-provoking experience for the viewer. One of the most notable elements in his paintings is the recurring use of a bowl or half-spherical shape\, which has become his signature image. Manes’ palette is often restricted\, focusing on natural hues that interact with rich off-white tones of kaolin pigment and deep red-brown-black earth colors\, enhancing the depth and texture of his work.\nManes reflects on his process with a sense of playful experimentation\, particularly in his exploration of the bowl form. “I’ve painted bowls for a long time. An orb is fun to paint. Then you cut it in half and make them hollow\, and it’s ten times more fun to paint. You can stack them up and make designs in any way you want to. It fulfills my need to paint\,” he says. This approach reflects his willingness to continually evolve his aesthetic\, even as he remains rooted in certain thematic elements.\nHe describes his creative force as a natural progression rather than a deliberate intellectual exercise. “The brain just gets in the way. When I work\, thinking just gets in the way. Working interferes with thinking and vice versa\,” He allows ideas to emerge organically during moments of rest or routine activities\, like driving or reading. This separation of thought and action enables him to be prolific\, layering his canvases with textures and depth that reflect both his immediate reality and subconscious influences. The result is a body of work that is richly textured\, visually compelling\, and deeply personal.\nBio:\nPaul Manes was born in Austin\, Texas. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Lamar University in Beaumont\, Texas in 1983 and went on to study at Hunter College in New York City. His works have been exhibited in one-person exhibitions across Texas\, California\, and New York\, as well as internationally throughout Italy\, France\, Monaco\, and Germany. His work was included in the 2016 exhibition Painting After Postmodernism in Brussels\, Belgium. Manes’ work can be found in the permanent collections of The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; the Tucson Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts Houston; the Art Museum of Southeast Texas in Beaumont; and in the private collections of Yoko Ono and Emeril Lagasse. The artist currently lives and works in Carbondale\, Colorado.

DESCRIPTION:Redbud Arts Center is excited to announce our upcoming exhibition “Navigational Points\,” featuring the works of artist Laura Drey.\nLaura\, a multi-disciplinary artist from Houston\, Texas\, weaves her Mexican-American heritage and family history into her diverse artistic practice. Her work spans across drawing\, painting\, sewing\, weaving\, and embroidery\, exploring complex themes such as identity\, race\, class\, labor\, and geography. These themes are deeply personal\, rooted in her experiences of home\, belonging\, and intergenerational storytelling.\nLaura’s art is heavily influenced by the lives of her family members\, who worked as migrant farmers and longshoremen along the Gulf Coast. These stories and histories are woven into her material choices\, where she incorporates both conventional domestic items like thread\, needles\, and scissors\, and commercial materials used in farming\, such as polypropylene sacking\, burlap\, and twist ties. These elements come together to create intricate and materially rich artworks that reflect the layered narratives of her cultural and familial background.\nHer artistic expression is further enriched by her Mexican-American experiences\, as well as her roles as a daughter\, mother\, and poet. Laura’s work often delves into the bonds of family\, the meaning of home\, and the ways in which personal and cultural histories intersect and evolve.\nWith an M.F.A. in Studio Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a B.A. (Honors) from the University of St. Thomas in Houston\, Laura’s educational background has also played a significant role in shaping her approach to art\, allowing her to explore and expand upon these themes with a deep sense of purpose and insight.

DESCRIPTION:The Hobby Center Presents Live at the Founders Club\nJazz singer Raquel Cepeda and pianist Marvio Ciribelli bring Brazil to Houston with “Brazil Samba Jazz.”\nThe concert will feature the sensual and energizing rhythms of Brazil and will include classic tunes by Antonio Carlos Jobim\, Roberto Menescal and Carlos Valle\, as well as original music by Raquel Cepeda and Marvio Ciribelli.\nThe Brazil Samba Jazz Project started in 2015 and is an international collaboration between Cepeda and Ciribelli\, two jazz artists that keep the pulse of the jazz scene respectively in Houston and Rio de Janeiro.\nHouston based singer and songwriter Raquel Cepeda is originally from Venezuela. A former geologist for the oil industry\, Cepeda has shared the stage with jazz greats such as Ellis Marsalis and Delfeayo Marsalis\, and has recorded two solo albums. Her latest album “Passion” was nominated for the 2020 Pepsi Music Awards in Venezuela in the category of Best Jazz Album.\nPianist Marvio Ciribelli is from Rio de Janeiro\, has recorded 18 albums and participated in numerous jazz festivals including the Montreux Jazz Festival and the Java Jazz Festival. Marvio is also a composer and arranger.\nPerforming with Ciribelli and Cepeda are Brazilian percussionist Cassio Duarte\, Brazilian drummer Adriano Santos\, and Houston bassist David Craig.

Jensen Dr.\, Houston\, TX 77003\nIn French with English surtitles.\nDuration: approximately 2h30 with intermission.\nThis play is appropriate for high school audiences and adults due to language.\nCreated at the Théâtre du Palais Royal in Paris in 2005\, the comedy TOC TOC was written by Laurent Baffie and has been seen by millions of spectators around the world.\nLaurent Baffie: “I always try to put people in situations where they would not normally meet. As a child I had an obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) myself\, and at the time\, people didn’t talk about it. As I researched the subject\, I realized that it was a serious issue and that it needed to be treated with sensitivity\, without making fun of the people affected.”\n​\nIn this play\, six patients with six different obsessive-compulsive disorders meet in the waiting room of Dr Stern\, a specialist in the treatment of OCD. This internationally renowned neuro-psychiatrist only consults in France once every 2 or 3 years\, and never sees the same patient twice. But the doctor’s plane is stuck in Frankfurt. To pass the time\, Fred\, Sandie\, Blanche\, Marie\, Lili and Bob get to know each other and share their stories and their respective conditions. The final result is some real therapy\, along with a lot of bickering and humor along the way. A light\, funny play that tries to dispel all the preconceptions about OCD sufferers.​

DESCRIPTION:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is the artist’s first solo museum presentation in the United States. Across an installation\, a video\, and a series of commissioned sculptures\, Erlanger continues her decade-long disruption of the “semiotics of suburbia.” In her practice\, Erlanger thinks of the home as a greater ecosystem containing not only houses but also their surrounding infrastructures and interior architectures.\nAt Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH)\, massive illuminated planet sculptures map the suburban landscape\, positioning the development of home as an environmental force in itself. These new works explore “speculative memory”—how progress can only be understood through hindsight—and what this psychic limitation implies for the artist. Viewers will then move to new diorama sculptures that play on an institutional language of presentation\, positioning the enclosed scenes as already-past. Here\, Erlanger proposes both impossible architectures and terrestrial forms created using strategies of model-making. These works are each marked by changes in season\, emphasizing receding memories of a once-diverse climate.\nThe exhibition culminates in a sitcom set\, riffing on the psychology of interiors as well as acting as a platform to watch Erlanger’s new short film Appliance. The film dovetails recent research into the history and cultural significance of domestic technologies\, such as the shower or washing machine\, with a specific focus on how their operations have been considered interchangeably with human bodily functions. For over 20 years he has worked to transform the Southside of Chicago through various initiatives aimed at preserving and continuing the neighborhood’s vital role as a site for Black creativity. SUMMARY:Celebrating Anton Bruckner's 200th Birthday
DESCRIPTION:Although Anton Bruckner was one the most visionary symphonic composers at the end of the nineteenth century\, his biography continues to be dominated by anecdotes about his eccentric personality. Lesser known is the fact that he composed his sacred choral music as a celebrated organist and choir director for performances alongside works of the old masters—particularly Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. This unlikely “artistic partnership” also inspired his own vocal style. For example\, writing about an 1888 performance of Bruckner’s 7-part Ave Maria\, a reviewer praised the piece as “a true palestrinian torrent of sound in the garb of the Renaissance.” We celebrate Bruckner’s 200th birthday with favorites such as Os justi\, Ave Maria\, and selections from the Mass in E Minor in the context of the old masters who influenced him.
