Back BOX gallery “Fries” by San Antonio artist Michael Guerra Foerster is an interactive ceramic exhibition located in the Back Box that features vibrantly colorful ceramic works that employ fantastical\, absurd\, and bizarre imagery and interactive elements to explore big feelings on grief\, love\, desire\, and masculinity. Molly Sydnor presents “After the Rain Part 1” in the Window BOX gallery for her first ever showing of work in Houston Texas. These handwoven textiles aim to hypnotize viewers and challenge your perception of color theory. Finally in our Upstairs BOX Gallery will feature current member Peter Broz. His show “Out of Touch in the Wild” is a collection of two-dimensional works that explores the fine line between fear and excitement and how those feelings coincide with our experiences in nature. This mix of enchantment and terror is what peaks my interest the most.\nThe exhibitions continue through February 8\, 2025. It looks to the rural backroads of Texas for inspiration\, the forgotten towns\, the faded facades of old buildings and the natural cycles of growth\, decay\, and renewal. Back BOX gallery we show artist Alexandria Canchola and their work Fruits of Their Labor explores the dynamic contrast between two extraordinary women who shaped me: my Cuban grandmother and my Mexican-American aunt\, Aunt Carrie. By examining our distinct yet interconnected lives\, this body of work illuminates how their experiences inform my understanding of identity\, resilience\, and a woman’s place in the world. In the Window BOX gallery Cosmic Duality by Cassie Gnehm showcases two oil and acrylic paintings that explore the connections between creation\, transformation\, and the infinite cosmos. Inspired by The Virgin of the Rocks and personal imagery\, the works feature exaggerated hands cradling celestial orbs\, symbolizing the delicate balance of life and death. Finally Mateo Gutiérrez is presenting several large scale hand-embroidered artworks depicting images of people coming across the US-Mexico border juxtaposed with images of people in the aftermath shootings. The title of the exhibition is It’s the End of the World As We Know It\, and will be presented in the Upstairs Box gallery.\nThe exhibitions continue through March 29\, 2025. DESCRIPTION:Box 13 ArtSpace is pleased to present\, On the Backroads\, a survey of works by Jonas Criscoe exploring the aesthetics of detritus and decay through the lens of surface\, material and form. It looks to the rural backroads of Texas for inspiration\, the forgotten towns\, the faded facades of old buildings and the natural cycles of growth\, decay\, and renewal. Back BOX gallery we show artist Alexandria Canchola and their work Fruits of Their Labor explores the dynamic contrast between two extraordinary women who shaped me: my Cuban grandmother and my Mexican-American aunt\, Aunt Carrie. By examining our distinct yet interconnected lives\, this body of work illuminates how their experiences inform my understanding of identity\, resilience\, and a woman’s place in the world. In the Window BOX gallery Cosmic Duality by Cassie Gnehm showcases two oil and acrylic paintings that explore the connections between creation\, transformation\, and the infinite cosmos. Inspired by The Virgin of the Rocks and personal imagery\, the works feature exaggerated hands cradling celestial orbs\, symbolizing the delicate balance of life and death. Finally Mateo Gutiérrez is presenting several large scale hand-embroidered artworks depicting images of people coming across the US-Mexico border juxtaposed with images of people in the aftermath shootings. The title of the exhibition is It’s the End of the World As We Know It\, and will be presented in the Upstairs Box gallery.\nThe exhibitions continue through March 29\, 2025. Admission is free\, with a suggested donation of $5.\nProduced by Artbound and distributed by PBS SoCal\, La Raza tells the story of the influential bilingual newspaper and magazine of the same name\, published in East Los Angeles from 1967 to 1977 by Chicano activists. Through powerful writing and photography\, La Raza became a voice for the Chicano Movement\, documenting the lived experiences\, struggles\, and resistance of Mexican-Americans in Southern California.\nFollowing the hour-long screening\, attendees will view a 15-minute short documentary about Luis C. From constructing studio walls to assisting artists with gallery installations\, the work of past and present members has been instrumental in ensuring the continued success of this unique arts hub. With 22 local artists currently utilizing our affordable studio spaces\, and over 40 artists set to showcase their work this year\, BOX 13 remains a vital platform for artistic expression and innovation.\nThe fundraiser will feature two key components: the “Empty BOX” Silent Auction\, and the Poor Man’s Raffle. The Silent Auction will provide attendees with the opportunity to acquire artwork donated by talented local\, national\, and international artists\, making it a perfect opportunity to enhance any art collection. Meanwhile\, the Poor Man’s Raffle offers a chance to win artwork by BOX 13’s current Resident Artists.\nProceeds from both the Silent Auction and Raffle will go directly toward supporting BOX 13’s mission to promote the creation and advancement of experimental contemporary art. Proceeds from the auction and raffle will directly support BOX 13’s mission to promote and advance contemporary art and maintain and improve the building. SUMMARY:Mariachi Mestiza y Mala Mujer
DESCRIPTION:Andrea Daniela was born to be on stage; a singer\, violinist\, dancer and actor\, she is a proud Houston native and alumna of MECA\, HSPVA\, and UTD. She has spent half of her life mastering traditional mariachi music accompanying artists such as Yolanda del Rio\, Paquita la del Barrio\, Shaila Durcal\, and Espinoza Paz. In 2018\, she won Las Grandes Voces del Mariachi in Guadalajara\, Jalisco\, and in 2019 she joined the cast of the world’s first mariachi opera with the Houston Grand Opera. She has twice earned second place at the Houston Rodeo’s Mariachi Invitational (2016 & 2022) and in 2022 was played the lead role in American Mariachi with the San Antonio Public Theatre.\nHer debut album\, Mariachi\, Mestiza y Mala Mujer\, showcases a new genre she calls mariachi alternative—fusing the traditional roots of mariachi with unexpected global influences such as pop\, funk\, and hip-hop. This work is a powerful reclamation of voice\, identity\, and artistry from a Mexican-American: the daughter of an immigrant father and a fifth-generation Tejana taking ownership of all aspects of her cultural identity and pushes the boundaries of mariachi to tell the story of a woman who refuses to be put in a box—liberated\, empowered\, and unapologetically herself.\nPlease join us for an excusive pre-release experience. This intimate evening will feature live music of never-before-heard songs\, special guest performances\, and a live Q&A with Andrea Daniela and her producers\, as they walk you through the creative journey of creating this bold sound that. This stipped down live show mirrors the raw\, vulnerable energy of a Tiny Desk performance—personal\, powerful\, and unfiltered and takes you on a journey between tradition and innovation proving that art knows no borders.\nAll proceeds from this event will go directly toward the production of the album’s music videos. A grant from the Houston Arts Alliance helped fund the recording process and this event\, but now AD continues to raise funds to visually bring her vision to life. DESCRIPTION:May 30 – June 28\, 2025 Exhibitions\nOpening Reception Friday May 30\, 2025 6pm to 9pm\nBOX 13 ArtSpace is pleased to present four new exhibitions opening Friday May 30\, 2025 6pm to 9pm.\nBox 13 ArtSpace is pleased to present “Infinite Plume” by Astri Snodgrass. In sculptural works on and of paper\, Astri Snodgrass reimagines the sexist trope of the spinster as a symbol of queer creativity. Tall paper scrolls bear hand painted patterns of calligraphic text that wavers between legible messages and lyrical mark making. This is Snodgrass’ first exhibition in Texas\, on view in the Front BOX gallery at Box13. In our Back BOX gallery we are excited to show “Potential Future Pasts” and an exhibition by EG Gionfriddo and Eliot Gray Fisher co-direct ARCOS\, a multi/trans/inter/anti-disciplinary group using dance and technology to imagine new possible futures. The Window BOX gallery featured artist Trevon Latin. “Prelude” is a projected digital collage by Trevon Latin\, offering a glimpse into the inspirations behind Catwalk\, his upcoming body of work. Compiled from photos\, short videos\, and found visuals\, the piece is inspired by walks through Houston and Brooklyn\, and reflects on communities affected by addiction\, homelessness\, and violence. “PUSH/PULL” is a transdisciplinary exhibition project featuring new works by aisha tida and Leila Mnekbi in the Upstairs BOX gallery at Box13 ArtSpace\, developed with the support of ARCOS Dance and funded in part by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance. Through experiential sculptural and sound works and audience collaboration\, “PUSH/PULL” invites visitors to experiment with notions of agency and collectivity while questioning the patterns\, loops\, and illusions we wish to escape.\nThe exhibitions continue through June 28\, 2025. DESCRIPTION:PUSH/PULL is a transdisciplinary exhibition project featuring new works by aisha tida and Leila Mnekbi\, developed with the support of ARCOS Dance. The exhibition at Box13 ArtSpace invites visitors to experiment with notions of agency and collectivity while questioning the patterns\, loops\, and illusions that we wish to escape.\nA quilted structure by aisha tida envelops visitors in isolated overwhelm\, scored by Mnekbi’s discordant\, layered questioning in the multilingual sound experience Lines Lines On These Walls. These symbiotic works form the spatial sensory installation IN/OUT/THRU\, where visitors can slow down\, examine without judgment\, and sit with the weight they carry—not as an isolated burden\, but as a shared\, collective heaviness. Guided by an omniscient voice and surrounded by shifting sonic textures\, visitors are asked to be present in the chaos before engaging in collective commiserating and creative processing in the community-activated Aftercare Space.\nPUSH/PULL is further animated by a roster of public programming\, including an interactive opening night performance by ARCOS and skillsharing workshops oriented around materials featured in the exhibition.\nAt its core\, PUSH/PULL demonstrates the need for reflective pause and the exploration of the creative potential of togetherness. Its offerings serve as a reminder that even in fragmentation\, we are not alone.\nPUSH/PULL is on view in the Upstairs BOX Gallery at Box13 ArtSpace in Houston\, May 30 to June 28\, 2025\, open to the public Saturdays or by appointment. SUMMARY:PUSH/PULL :: Open Level Movement Workshop
DESCRIPTION:A 60-minute guided movement session for all bodies. Frameworks include questioning the systems that shape and restrict our body’s movements\, building trust with our body\, witnessing as an act of empathy\, and being seen as a generous act of connection. Participants will have an opportunity to enact embodied practices of care inside ARCOS’ interactive artwork\, Potential Future Pasts\, presented in the Back BOX Gallery at BOX 13 ArtSpace.\nNo dance experience required. Comfortable clothing recommended. Ages 15 and up.\nABOUT ARCOS\nARCOS hybridizes live\, dancing bodies with ancient to emergent technologies in ways that deepen our understanding of our interdependence and manifest strategies for our collective flourishing.
