Mickey Leeland Memorial Park

Opened in 2000, Mickey Leland Memorial Park serves as a monument to one of the favorite sons of Houston.

The half-acre park is located at the site of the first office occupied by Leland, a former Congressman whose political career launched in 1972 with his election to the Texas State Legislature. The park includes a collection of art, green space, sculptures and historical markers.

The centerpiece of the park is the memorial and the Beacon of Light, a three-sided black marble obelisk that includes inscriptions of the names of those who contributed to the park. At night, a search light beams upward serving as a “beacon of light” for the community, a touching tribute to the contributions of Mickey Leland.
