The weekend before Valentine’s Day, the East End Houston Cultural District rolls out the red carpet for a weekend of activities organized under the theme Fall in Love with the East End. Events kick off on Friday, February 8 from 1-5PM with an arts and culture open house where venues throughout the district will offer the public behind-the-scenes access to exhibit venues, creative factories, performance houses, and music production studios where great art is made. On February 9 from 10AM-2PM, the fun continues with a Valentine’s market and tours of East End’s extensive collection of outdoor murals.

5301.18a Arts + Culture Lab is a transdisciplinary creation labroratory of artsits that experiment, produce and exhibit contemporary artistsic practives with a social and community focus. An old cafeteria built in 1920 to feed the workers of a historic industrial park now houses the exchange of harmonious coesitence between artists and thier cariou manifestiations. Through workshops, artis resdiecnies and cultual production gtatherings, the Laborarty achieves to be an oaiss of creativitiy, community and collective practieses that intend to form a self sustaining organisme thorugh the living culture of collaboritaon and the sharing or resources.

Aurora Picture Show

Aurora Picture Show is a non-profit media arts center dedicated to expanding the cinematic experience and promoting the understanding and appreciation of moving image art. Throughout the year, Aurora presents innovative non-traditional, artist-made film, video, and multidisciplinary works. We support artists, engage audiences, foster community collaboration, and seed the future of creative media-making in Houston through unique artistic and educational experiences. Aurora works with a wide range of community collaborators, regularly partnering with museums, organizations, festivals, schools, libraries, community centers, and hospitals to present an array of engaging programs throughout the city.
Aurora Picture Show (Visit us at Arts & Culture Lab – 5301 Polk St #18A) Aurora Picture Show is a non-profit media arts organization dedicated to expanding the cinematic experience and promoting the appreciation of moving image art. Located on Navigation Blvd., Aurora produces the annual Night Light event along Buffalo Bayou East and a variety of artists’ films, installations, and multimedia performances. For this open house, Aurora will be partnering with our friends at Arts & Culture Lab! Come by their space at 5301 Polk St. to see videos showcasing Aurora’s eclectic programming and talk to staff about our upcoming programs and community events!

It’s a collection of colorful murals coming to Navigation Blvd. in Houston’s East End! Extending from the Esplanade, the Calle de Colores serves as an iconic attraction for locals and tourists alike. Each mural, crafted by local artists, tells its own story. Visitors can explore these stories as they stroll the oak-shaded Esplanade. Plan a visit to see our Calle de Colores soon or join us for a tour!

Canal Street Studios is one of Houston’s longstanding independent artist-run studio buildings – a private visual arts studio nestled right in the middle of Houston’s vibrant Second Ward neighborhood, housed within a beautifully converted 1940’s warehouse, the building consists of 10 studio workspaces.

In its inaugural year, 2022, the gallery showcased renowned artists Bruce Herman, Anthony Suber, and Sara Triana.

Magpies & Peacocks

Magpies & Peacocks, Inc. is the nation’s only 501(c)3 non-profit design house dedicated to the collection and sustainable reuse of post-consumer clothing, scrap textiles and accessories diverted from landfill – in order to disrupt the cycle of waste in the fashion industry and mitigate its enormous environmental and social impact. We work with an in-house team of designers, makers and artists to create unique up-cycled products, offer skill building and sustainability education, and incubate circular fashion innovation. Our model rests on four pillars: Collaborate, Create, Educate and Invest.
We’ll be open on 2/8/25 from 11 am-5 pm. Open house attendees will be able to tour our atelier + fabric store and shop our retail store of curated, upcycled items. We’ll be serving from our donation-based espresso bar Valentine’s Day Cosmopolitan and French 76 cocktails sponsored by EADO Vodka along with espresso-based drinks and a few hors d’oeuvres. Attendees will also be able to take part in our photo booth from 1 pm-4 pm with one of our photographers Thomas Guerrero of Guerrero Creative who will take fashion-shoot-inspired Valentine’s photos that will be emailed to them. Check out our attached photo from when we did the fashion photo booth for our recent After Dark 2024 annual runway fundraiser at the Julia B. Ideson Library for an example . We’ll have a fresh flower market set up right when you enter our grand entryway for those looking to grab some beautiful flowers for their special Valentine

The Coronation Theater

The Coronation Theater is all about making it up on the spot and has been since 2023. We pride ourselves on the highest quality improvisation theater that the city has to offer. The Coronation offers weekly shows, classes, and corporate development workshops. As well as a bar for beer and wine. A coronation is a celebration, and that’s what this theater is—a celebration of improv. A place where kind creatives can stay curious with their comedy.
Better Fate than Never Every Saturday 7:30 PM A show about breakups, dating, and love. The Coronation Theater is proud to present Better Fate Than Never. And you are cordially invited. Our ensemble of improvisers will spend the evening exploring the comedy of romantic relationships. The good, the bad, and the just plain weird. Your suggestions will help the scenes, stories, and characters come to life. Join us for an intimate evening about intimacy.

Wonky Power
