Jatziri Barron is a Mexican visual artist and muralist living and working in Houston since 2013, dedicated full-time to her art. The artist advocates through her art about the beauty of cultural identity and is interested in creating bonds for connecting people no matter their race, religion, culture, or background by creating awareness of different humanitarian topics. As she comments on her latest work, “We are an extension of nature, magnifiers of our culture and identity, our skin tell stories about our ancestors, we are our colors, we are our roots, and we’re proud”. Jatziri expresses the world around her through both figurative and abstract art since she believes constant exploration feeds her process of creation, the most important aspect of her art is carrying messages and awakening feelings of positiveness, interconnection, and representing individuals at their highest selves. Jatziri studied at the Glassell School of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and has done work for institutions like the Witte Museum of San Antonio, many private companies and clients in U.S. and Mexico, and exhibited in places such as the Kinder Morgan Building in Houston Downtown, Silver Street Studios, Glassell building, the Historic Texaco Building Houston, between others. I was born and raised in Mexico but moved to Houston 9 years ago. East End is a community I feel connected to since it’s a community with a high percentage of generations of immigrants, in general, and a Latino community. My work is connected to expanding and impacting communities as well as promoting culture. As a Latina immigrant, to have a mural in the East End, which is a place that truly represents my roots and that makes me feel at home, it’s such an honor. It’s also an honor to serve my community through art, to be able to make someone’s day better and make them remember where they come from, what they love the most about their culture. For this project I wanted to highlight an Aztec dancer. I’m also inspired by ancestors. So on one of the walls, I’m going to paint grandparents. This is one of the biggest murals that we’re doing on Navigation Boulevard. My work talks about community and culture. This mural was painted with the assistance of a team of female artists including Prisilla Ramos and Katya DuPond.
Jatziri Barron es una artista visual y muralista mexicana que vive y trabaja en Houston desde 2013, dedicada a su arte a tiempo completo. La artista aboga a través de su arte por la belleza de la identidad cultural y está interesada en crear vínculos para conectar a las personas sin importar su raza, religión, cultura o antecedentes creando conciencia sobre diferentes temas humanitarios. Como comenta sobre su último trabajo, “Somos una extensión de la naturaleza, magnificadores de nuestra cultura e identidad, nuestra piel cuenta historias sobre nuestros antepasados, somos nuestros colores, somos nuestras raíces y estamos orgullosos”. Jatziri expresa el mundo que la rodea a través del arte figurativo y abstracto, ya que cree que la exploración constante alimenta su proceso de creación; el aspecto más importante de su arte es transmitir mensajes y despertar sentimientos de positividad, interconexión y representar a los individuos en su yo más elevado. Nací y crecí en México, pero me mudé a Houston hace nueve años. East End es una comunidad con la que me siento conectada ya que es una comunidad con un alto porcentaje de generaciones de inmigrantes, en general, y una comunidad latina. Mi trabajo está conectado con expandir e impactar comunidades, así como promover la cultura. Como inmigrante latina, tener un mural en el East End, que es un lugar que realmente representa mis raíces y que me hace sentir como en casa, es un gran honor. También es un honor servir a mi comunidad a través del arte, poder mejorar el día de alguien y hacerle recordar de dónde viene, qué es lo que más ama de su cultura. Para este proyecto quise destacar a una bailarina azteca. También me inspiran los antepasados. Así que en una de las paredes voy a pintar a los abuelos. Este es uno de los murales más grandes que estamos haciendo en Navigation Boulevard. Mi trabajo habla de comunidad y cultura. Este mural fue pintado con la ayuda de un equipo de artistas femeninas, incluidas Prisilla Ramos y Katya DuPond.
