The East End Gateway Mural is a large-scale public artwork created by Betirri to welcome residents and visitors to Houston’s East End as the city prepares to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Installed along the Harrisburg METRO Rail corridor, the mural serves as a visual gateway that celebrates the neighborhood’s rich history, cultural diversity, and enduring community spirit.
Inspired by the East End’s industrial heritage, railroad legacy, and vibrant Latino roots, the mural weaves together themes of movement, connection, and football through Betirri’s signature bodiless figures. Rather than focusing solely on the World Cup, the artwork highlights the identity of the East End itself, using the global language of football to tell a deeply local story.
The project was developed in collaboration with the East End Cultural District and completed with the support of a team of artist apprentices, reinforcing the mural’s role not only as a public artwork but also as an educational and community-building initiative. By mentoring emerging artists throughout the process, Betirri expanded the project’s impact beyond the finished mural.
Today, the East End Gateway Mural stands as a lasting symbol of Houston’s creativity and hospitality, inviting the world to discover one of the city’s most historic neighborhoods while leaving a meaningful cultural legacy that will endure long after the final whistle of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Betirri is a Houston-based visual artist known for merging the worlds of art and football into a unique visual language that celebrates movement, identity, and community. Born in Mexico and trained in architecture and painting at the University of Houston, his work captures the essence of the beautiful game through his signature bodiless figures in motion.
Betirri has collaborated with organizations such as Major League Soccer, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the City of Houston, using his practice to bring cultural awareness and community engagement through football. His initiative, The Ball Rising Through Culture, and programs like Monday Night Futbol have created spaces where sport, art, and storytelling intersect.
As Houston prepared to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Betirri continued to play a key role in shaping the city’s cultural narrative, using art to unite communities and honor the global impact of the game.
