Artist Valentina Atkinson invited eleven other established artists to join her in opening the Canal Street Gallery. Just a few blocks east of Minute Maid Park, the gallery opened to the public on April 18, featuring the original works of all the artists turned board members. Situated in a refurbished space, the gallery features rotating work from resident and visiting artists in the front and the original twelve on permanent display in the back of the gallery. Canal Street Gallery is unique in that the gallery has a classroom where resident and visiting artists hold art workshops and classes for students.
Patrons can expect to find as many mediums as materials used with twelve artists’ work on display. Canal Street Gallery artist David Lloyd says in his statement, “Tradition and innovation are of equal interest to me, regarding both materials and technique. I therefore produce figurative, abstract, surreal, and expressionistic pieces, working in oil, acrylic, ink, and watercolor on a variety of supports.”
The gallery is located just east of downtown Houston and Minute Maid Park near Navigation St.
