The Houston Downtown Management District (Downtown District) kicks off the public engagement phase of Plan Downtown with the launch of My Downtown, an interactive survey and mapping tool designed by project consultant and international interdisciplinary planning and design firm Sasaki Associates.
“My Downtown is an integral piece of the community engagement strategy for Plan Downtown, a new 20-year vision that will position Downtown at the forefront of Houston’s advancement as a global city,” said Bob Eury, Executive Director of the Downtown District. “Along with text surveys, public workshops and topical focus groups, the My Downtown survey results will provide us with indispensible insight into the ways in which people experience Downtown Houston, whether they’re residents, workers or visitors.”
The digital survey consists of two parts – an interactive map and a short text-based
survey – that are intended to provide a snapshot of a day in the life of Downtown Houston. The intuitive interface leads users through guided mapping activities that identify where people spend time in Downtown and how they get around. It also seeks to collect significant “sentimental” information about how people view their interactions with and in Downtown.
The responses will allow the project team to amass unique use information and illustrate data to better visualize how people interact in and around the area, and will help shape Plan Downtown, which will be presented in late fall of this year.

ABOUT DOWNTOWN DISTRICT
The Downtown District was formed in 1995 for the purpose of revitalizing the urban core of the country’s fourth largest city. Over the past decade, the Downtown District has used a combination of public funds and private resources to catalyze area improvements focusing on the city blocks bordered by Interstate 10, Highway 59 and Interstate 45.
The Downtown District operates under the leadership of a 30-person board of directors who oversee the implementation of the District’s strategic initiatives. Funding for the Downtown District comes from a special assessment on all downtown property owners.
