Philly Soul Sound Vol. IV

April 27 @ 8:15 pm - 10:00 pm

On Saturday, April 27th, The Philly Soul Sound Show is pulling up its classic patchwork bell-bottomed pant and dusting off its platformed sole for another go-round. So, get ready with us, Community Music Center of Houston, as we present the music of the late 60s and 70s created by producers Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff, and Thom Bell at Philadelphia International Records. They combined soulful string arrangements, horns, and funk rhythms to produce a sub-genre of funk that is less aggressive than pure funk; TSOP’s orchestrated sound has been described as “putting the bow tie on funk.”
Dr. Anne Lundy, Community Music Center of Houston’s Music Director, had this to say about the upcoming show, “This year is our fourth time putting on this show. We keep getting invited back; wow, what an honor for us. The Miller audience seems to love the Philly Soul Classics, and we are happy to bring them to the stage. This year will feature the music of Lou Rawls, Jean Carne, Teddy Pendergrass, and many others. We hope you’ll join us for an evening of unforgettable music.”
Funding provided by the Miller Theatre Advisory Board (MTAB)
This event is also funded in part by the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance, the Texas Commission on the Arts, and the BIPOC Arts Network and Fund.
CMCH is recognized as a Houston Cultural Treasure by the BIPOC Arts Network and Fund.
