Poems of Their Future is an evening of performance activating Theaster Gates: The Gift and the Renege. The program, created by Avalon Hogans, a multidisciplinary writer/artist and resident of Freedmen’s Town, invites attendees to consider Houston’s Mother Ward as a place with a resilient history and vibrant future. Finding home in community and celebrating expression, Poems of Their Future features spoken word by Houston Poet Laureate Aris Kian, music by Tasiah Iman, and poetry and dance by Avalon Hogans and Joy Crissmon with co-creative direction by Goodnews Nwankwo.
