Like many other areas of the United States during World War II, Texas saw an increased military presence as new military units were raised and posts were built to train them. Among them were many Black Americans who came to Texas to train for the war effort. While it is known that famous units such as the elements of the Tuskegee Airmen and the 761st Tank Battalion were trained here, many other Black units were also either raised in the state or conducted training here, ranging from Coastal Artillery to Engineer Regiments.
