Houston ISD students paint mural with famed artist Vincent Valdez in Houston’s East End

Long after senior Anjali Morua graduates from Houston ISD’s High School for Law and Justice, her artwork will live on as part of a mile-and-a-half stretch of vibrant murals in Houston’s East End.
Morua and nine other high schoolers primarily from the East Houston neighborhood worked with San Antonio artist Alex Rubio over their spring break to create “Memoria/Memory,” a mural dedicated to fellow artist Vincent Valdez’s mother. The project was made in collaboration with Valdez, who worked under Rubio at age 10 before his nearly 40-year career was celebrated in the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston’s “Vincent Valdez… Just a Dream” exhibition through March.

East End Improvement Corporation (EEIC) and Wells Fargo unveiled the first of seven BCycle “Art Stations” as part of a community program to connect residents and visitors to public art and businesses in East End Houston. The unveiling ceremony included the donation of 36 bicycles and helmets to East End students in coordination with local non-profit Wellness On Wheels (WOW).Â
