David Maldonado is a Mexican-American artist based in Houston, Texas. His oeuvre is a homage to the rich tapestry of folk art, the energy of street culture, and the revolutionary zeal of the Mexican muralist movement. Visually, David’s art is a blend of intricate patterns, textiles, and juxtaposition of graphic and organic motifs that celebrate the connections and common ground found within communities.
Muralist David Maldonado created with mural as a collaboration with the KIPP East End High School Art Club. Of the project, David said: The concept started in the classroom with multiple workshops where students shared sketches of what they wanted to see on their mural. Elements of home, hobbies, imagination and exploration. We found common ground in our discussions, love for good home cooking, our skyline, pride for our culture and translating documents for our parents. I shared my family’s connection to the community, 3 generations of longshoreman, coming down to the union hall (when on Harrisburg) with my dad before sunrise. This was special for everyone and I feel privileged to have helped facilitate this mural. What drew me to art of muralismo in my youth was the call to participate. Whether the artist or the viewer, it’s the communication between us. An invitation where the door entry is swung open. Even with sketches we had improvisation and every mark reflective of those present. I’m inspired and looking forward to seeing what grows from this.
David Maldonado es un artista mexicano-estadounidense radicado en Houston, Texas. Su obra es un homenaje al rico tapiz del arte popular, la energía de la cultura callejera y el entusiasmo revolucionario del movimiento muralista mexicano. Visualmente, el arte de David es una mezcla de patrones intrincados, textiles y una yuxtaposición de motivos gráficos y orgánicos que celebran las conexiones y los temas de interés que se encuentran dentro de las comunidades.
El muralista David Maldonado creó el mural en colaboración con el Club de Arte de KIPP East End High School. Sobre el proyecto, David dijo: El concepto comenzó en el aula con múltiples talleres donde los estudiantes compartían bocetos de lo que querían ver en su mural. Elementos del hogar, pasatiempos, imaginación y exploración. Encontramos puntos en común en nuestras discusiones: amor por la buena comida casera, nuestro horizonte, orgullo por nuestra cultura y traducir documentos para nuestros padres. Yo compartí la conexión de mi familia con la comunidad, tres generaciones de estibadores, bajando al sindicato (cuando estaba en Harrisburg) con mi papá antes del amanecer. Esto fue especial para todos y me siento privilegiado de haber ayudado a facilitar este mural. Lo que me atrajo del arte del muralismo en mi juventud fue el llamado a participar. Ya sea el artista o el espectador, es la comunicación entre nosotros. Una invitación donde se abre la puerta de entrada.
