The 2017 East End Street Fest con Corazón took place on the award-winning Navigation Esplanade on Saturday, October 21st. In partnership with the Houston East End Chamber of Commerce, the Greater East End Management District-produced festival returned for its sixth year. Festival goers reported that this year’s festival was the best one yet. With a fully-activated kid zone, over 60 artisan vendors, thirteen local vendors, and a full day’s worth of musical and dance entertainment, the 2017 East End Street Festival con Corazón, benefiting Hurricane Harvey Relief welcomed over 5,000 attendees to the Navigation Esplanade in the heart East End Houston. The City of Houston is gearing up to add another thirty-eight artworks to street-side traffic signal control cabinets throughout Houston and is encouraging artists to submit qualifications for the opportunity to create a mural. Known as “Mini Murals”, Houston now has over 170 new original artworks in neighborhoods throughout the city that have been funded by Mayor Sylvester Turner and City Council, as well as private sponsors.
A community event in the East End Cultural District coinciding with Cinco de Mayo, Piñatafest celebrates the ancient cultural tradition of piñata-making and the long-lived presence throughout the 2nd Ward. The event will showcase traditional and contemporary piñatas in a public setting, host live music performances and offer many free family-friendly activities.
Tourists and Houston residents will have an opportunity to experience the unique flavor of the East End, Houston’s birthplace, during Super Bowl LI. The completion of the METRORail Green Line along Harrisburg Boulevard will allow history, photography, and foodie enthusiasts ample opportunity to indulge in what the East End has to offer.
FrenetiCore Dance, in collaboration with acclaimed hip-hop crew Inertia Dance Company, presents its first full-length dance concert since last winter’s The Snow Queen. Inspired by the resurgence of 90s popular culture in fashion, music, and iconography, Youth of a Nation offers a nostalgic retrospective of the decade through ten dances by acclaimed Houston choreographers, including Sarah Brotherton, Cori Miller Capetillo, Laura Harrell, Bryan Paul (Inertia), Ty’Esha Lewis (Inertia), Jennifer Hart Salter, Tory Pierce, and Heather VonReichbauer.
